That made my night! You know I just love this blog.
4 sales….
I feel horrible for those people that seriously overpaid.
They are in this gift guide too:
http://www.etsy.com/gift-guides/winter-accessories/218
I called them out on it in the Forums after they posted a pity Thread because of no Sales. Now I
I wonder.. Etsy said when you pay $0.20 for 1 listing is for 4 month period but how come I still see so many items has been listed since 2007 ?????
for example this one.. and many more when you view by Least recently listed:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=371345&ref=cat1_list_8
OK Tara. That is just strange.
As for this seller being in the gift guides? FAIL.

They’ve been renewed instead of relisted?
Another reseller:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/sovanlalsaha
The Gift Guides and other features are the easiest places to find resellers on Etsy. I have no way to prove this, but my impression so far is that the percentage of resellers is higher in Etsy features than on the site as a whole.
The staff go for the professionally staged for catalogs photos like iron filings to a magnet, no matter how many times they get caught.
Found on Regresty – A GIFT CARD!!! listed on etsy. WTF

Bedazzled- I agree. Do you think it’s intentional? I wonder how the content team just miss all these resellers they feature? Like, that grass vase man. Or the chick who said she brought it back from Thailand. In some cases, all they have to do it READ the listing?
I hate thinking it’s on purpose, but come on….
Sorry that was directed to Life During Wartime!
I’m tempted to call out…
Ah, WTF?? — I see you’ve also seen the magic of the ‘handmade’ Olive Garden gift card! Destined to become a classic along the lines of cowls, owls, fake facial fuzz and chunky knit acrylic crap, I’m sure.
Ok, I bumped up the thread this reseller posted in and I totally called her out. http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6331289
I also convoed a buyer that has an item reserved through her with a link to this blog and the wholesale link for the sweater she has reserved. It’s $13 at the wholesale site, and she’s selling it for $75.
This seller makes me sick! And did you read her profile how it’s all handmade? GAG ME!
I actually kinda like these clothes…. Am I sick for thinking that? They must be made in some sweatshop right? How can they sell a dress for $2?
Laura I really hope admin is not going to mute you! Your posts are hilarious but the situation is just plain sad

I know! I posted all fired up after reading this blog… Oh well…. She’s in the gift guides! Ugh…. I just felt badly for that buyer too bc she was a buyer only, and that was me for 2 years.
Just saw the thread — well done! I let my fingers do some flagging after that just to work off the annoyance of yet another faker in the gift guides.
Laura totally understand your frustration.
This reseller is also in 5 different treasuries. http://www.craftopolis.com/index.php?com=th&user=Jjanak
What a bunch of crap!
This site has all this sellers clothes as well as many others! may be useful when trying to identify other possible resellers:
http://www.wholesale-dress.net/
Laura, you’re my hero!
Well done!
Has anyone followed the above gift card link? She ‘took it down’ but left the listing blank with instructions to contact her if you still want it.
Flagged. again.
WTF?
sad sad sad
I’m actually kind of nervous to go back to the forums and read that thread. Sometimes when you call out I notice people in the thread start acting like you are the scum of the earth for breaking the ETSY LAWS of NO CALLING OUT. Bleech…
UGH! I just think if Etsy is going to promote themselves as a place for handmade, and they have all these rules for us to follow… why can’t they make sure a reseller doesn’t get in the gift guides or front page? Sometimes, it’s right in the listings!
It has to be on purpose right? Can the content team really miss all of these resellers? I mean, remember when grass man vase was on the FP?
My hero is the creator of this blog.
-Laura
Laura – so far you’re in the clear.
Sorry you misunderstood me about the ‘classy’ comment, I *was* referring to the OP though, not you!!!!
I’d ump up that thread in a milisecond if I wasnt’ permanently banned for calling out Admin choices just like this one. C’mon, guys, you can’t get muted for just writing “marking” on that thread so it will stay up– because the shop is still there and isn’t going to go away until it becomes viral.
Jeez admin needs to get it to-fucking-gether! We can often spot resellers with a quick scan of their listing/shop. It isn’t that difficult! They need to try harder. I mean this seller has some typical Chinese catalog style photos and the items ship from India. wtf. I’m not even sure a buyer would get anything other than scammed if they ordered something from Jjanak.
And they better not mute Laura since she didn’t start a call out thread. That stupid seller went to the forums ASKING for a critique and got one!
Laura so far you’re everyone hero, and you’re sure mine
Laura, I try to mistake malice for simple stupidity.
I think the admins, just like people who hearted the reseller or praised her shop in the thread, fell for a very skillful marketing presentation (the photos from the mass produced clothing line).
Etsy seems to hire young women who love to shop, which is fine as long as they aren’t so airheaded that they fall for any sales hype aimed at their demographic. I guess I’m mostly surprised they didn’t recognize the model.
I just bumped up that thread myself. Unfrigginbelievable!
I just read the last page of that thread (so far) and can’t believe a few people are still cheering the reseller on. WTF?
Some people don’t read, they probably just post to get themselves seen.
Life I agree with Leenie The people who have posted aren’t cheering her on they just haven’t read the thread and just went into critique her.
Laura, I am so proud of you! You stood up for something you believed in and if you are muted I would be pissed. Go back read the thread you would be pleased. No one has come down on you, really. People are pissed and calling you their hero!
She just sold another item. How sad! I flagged her shop, and sent the links to the wholesale website to Etsy. How long does it take administration to shut her down? I am just sick to my stomach that she keeps selling items.
And another sale! Geeeez!
we should all do our part to keep that thread bumped up until monday when admin is sure to see it. on top of flagging. i’m sure the shop will garner some negative attention, that may lead to closing. or maybe that is wishful thinking on my part.
“marking” is a great idea for those fearful of getting muted. although i wonder how many times one has to call out in a thread or threads before getting muted.
I got in trouble once before, and I can’t figure out how they knew it was me! It was the grass vase man, and I was fired up (right after reading this blog!) so I created a sock puppet and called him out. However. I was at work so I thought the IP wouldn’t be traced back to me. Wrong…
I got an email from admin saying sock puppets are not allowed or something like that….
Gosh, I’m admitting all of my secrets. I know it’s wrong, but I get so mad! FP resellers (and gift guide resellers) suck!
Hopefully, I won’t get in trouble since I didn’t start the thread… It’s kinda fun reading that thread and trying to figure out who the Call Out blog readers are.
I love you guys!
Well, I’m debsbeaddesigns. Frankly I don’t care if I get in trouble. I rarely post in the forums, but this just makes my blood boil!!!
wow laura! i wonder how they tracked it back to your shop. that’s crazy!
and imo, i don’t see anything wrong with calling out (in the forums) resellers, and shifty shop practices when there is evidence to back it up.
it’s just against the rules. and that sucks.
some people deserve a call out.
Etsy is starting to make Ebay look good. At least there money talks, not favoritism, lol.
“I got in trouble once before, and I can’t figure out how they knew it was me! It was the grass vase man, and I was fired up (right after reading this blog!) so I created a sock puppet and called him out. However. I was at work so I thought the IP wouldn’t be traced back to me. Wrong…”
—————–
I’m against using sock puppets, but if they can trace the puppets so easily to certain users, why can’t they stop the repeat resellers?
(I’m not against you calling this seller out, there are many cases where the sellers (and the admin.) deserve it, and this was one of those. And you didn’t use a puppet
)
Should we keep bumping the thread?
janicejoplin2 — I hear ya. But if a ‘critique’ for an Etsy shop is so superficial, why would a seller bother to request one? I would have thought the critique section was where a reseller would be most easily spotted, and that doesn’t seem to be the case. A small demonstration of how resellers get hearted, make sales, and get picked for Etsy features, though/
The thread is still open. The replies are half “oh I love your shop” and half “get off Etsy, you scumbag”
The thread is closed.
Just found this blog, and I LOVE it! I’m strictly an Etsy buyer, and it makes me so angry when people not only get away with this crap, but get fawned over by Etsy admin, featured, etc. I won’t even look at their stupid gift guides.
By the way, an admin has now locked the thread over there, saying calling out is against TOU
I think viral is the way to go here. Use Twitter, FB, etc, to get so many readers to THIS blog that an avalanche of emails goes to Etsy every time one of these things is discovered.
Keep up the good work!
Life..Oh I made the comment towards the stupid people who were not reading the thread and just to compliment reselling bioch. I wanted Laura to understand that she wasn’t being targeted by etsians for calling out but being praised.
The Etsians who just jumped in without reading at least a page looked so stupid for posting encouraging words.
I agree with your entire post. It sucks. Resellers and Adm.
Laura I’m like you I don’t get away with Nothing!
I wrote one comment under a blog that was out of line. I sent it in as anonymous and my girlfriend convoed me and said, “Anonoymous my ass! Get off that blog now! “
Well, on second thought I did order that sweater it is really cute. Ha
Just wanted to see if you guys were paying attention. We know that Adm. knows. Let’s see how long that shop stays up. This is serious. Come on Etsy what else do you need? I pray that she shills. Oh, not necessary no feedback.
I am also waiting to see how long it takes admin to close down her shop. It really is a no brainer, why the delay?
Oh my LisaJune closed the thread but the shop it’s till up…..etsy classic I guess
I find it amusing that she “welcomes wholesale inquiries”. Do you know how long it would take ONE person to knit any one of those items?
I think this whole debacle just goes to show that to get on the gift guides is easy-just use stock photos from the wholesaler that you are getting your ‘handmades’ from. I’m so tempted to do this so that I might have a chance in hell of being featured in a gift guide!
Shameful. Utterly shameful.
I love that admin go out of their way to determine if someone is a sockpuppet or not but can’t be fucking assed to click a link.
Way to go hipster douchebags. Way to go.
http://www.etsy.com/gift-guides/218?page=1
STILL in the gift guides!
Wait, the coat shows up in the gift guides, but it’s not there anymore when you click.
She’s gone.
The post may have been closed, but at least the truth got out. Etsy will ruin whatever reputation they have when buyers start to realize that there’s a good chance the ‘artist’ whose ‘handmade’ goods they’re buying — because they see it all over in Etsy promotions, so their work *must* be good — is really a reseller flogging wholesale sweatshop junk. It tarnishes us all by association.
How is that thread considered calling out? It was the stupid seller drawing all the attention to her shop in the first place.
Finally gone!
Its sad to say, and I don’t mean this in any sort of racial way, but professional photos and Asian models frequently leads to resellers.
Hit the road Jjanak and don’t you come back no mo. no mo, no mo….Hit the road Jjank and DON’T YOU COME BACK NO MO!
Oh but we all know she’ll be back! sigh
I swear to God those Cowls breed overnight.
So, just out of interest, what happens happens to her buyers now that she’s no longer on Etsy? Do they still receive their over-priced merchandise?

I swear to God those Cowls breed overnight.
LOL… Now that is funny!
The cowls must be going over great in Miami, Houston, LA, Palm Springs, Australia. You know, the whole half of the planet that DOESN’T want to wear a blanket around the neck at this time of year.
Finally. That took long enough. I hope those buyers get their items. When a seller gets removed for a violation Etsy should send automated emails to buyers so they might have time to consider filing a dispute. I’m pretty sure ebay does that.
And yah I don’t think I’ve seen a cowl around here since the 70s or 80s (pretty sure they were all attached to sweaters/sweater dresses then). It’s rarely cold enough for anything like that. I have a wool sweater that I’ve only worn twice in many years… when I was on vacation. So no cowls for me
I’m new around here….has this shop been busted in the past?

Their shop announcement says they will do custom orders, so I’m not sure they are a reseller.
When I cut and pasted “hat 823611″ into google, it led to a closed Etsy shop that had similar merchandise.
I am of the opinion that when shops have merchandise numbers in their listings, they are simply using their wholesale supply inventory numbers. I have yet to see one that doesn’t, so I have no reason to believe that those hats are anything but wholesale reseller fodder.
Oh yah koly is a reseller. I recognize some of the models from previously closed reseller shops. flag away. I’m pretty sure that hat store has been closed before too.
UGH!!!!!! It never ends
Oh didn’t see your post Angel… thought I recognized those hat pics.
imwithya: You probably have seen those hat pics before. “winterhats1″ has been on etsy at least three times before, under these names:
winteretsyhats
hatetsywinter
winteretsyhatshop
All those shops are now closed. Dunno if she’d have time to do any custom orders; too busy thinking up more permutations of her name.
Were those the pu hats?
i’mwithya…love that idea but I can’t see etsy doing anything that…progressive.
koly also has a link in her shop where you can go and purchase right from her shop – where she says stuff is from a factory. sigh.
And I have “merchandise numbers” in my listings, but I’m in NO way a reseller. I do it because I have probably made over 600 items in the past 2.5 years! And my first year when something sold and I’d have to remember…”did I make that in June or Sept” to try and find it in my inventory was a huge PITA. Now I have a code in all my listings (not in the title) so I can find my items easily.
FYI, I had two custom orders for cowls this weekend. It is cold in the winter in some parts of the world.
The hat reseller has been on there several times……….Boy, you’d think they’d find another way to sell their stuff. It takes way too much time to keep setting up accounts and putting in all the merchandise to keep getting it shut down……..
Totally off subject, but has anyone else had any problems getting into Regretsy? From work AND my home, I keep getting a “IE can’t open site, operation aborted” message. I thought maybe it was my work blocking it, but I get the same problem at home…………..I’d bring it up over at Etsy, but you know what will happen………..thanks!
I can get in there, but it hasn’t been updated in 2 days. I keep hoping for a new item, lol.
OMG! Why do major rule breakers start threads? http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6342333&page=1
This chick has items that state, not vintage but close enough! Excely pointed it out on page 2, but no one else picked up on it. Of course, I did….
I have been problems with regretsy too – same thing.
leenie..didn’t mean to offend. I personally love cowels and where I live I see them everywhere. My point was Adm. puts them everywhere also. When I looked at the gift guide I couldn’t believe how many were represented! Good for your orders!
Laura I can not believe that thread. You and excely were having your own “conversation” and those around you were totally oblivious to the fact that OP was breaking the rules. They just continued talking about international shipping as if there wasn’t red flag moments going on around them.
What do they need a sledge hammer? Also I went to the links and the items were gone. Hmmmmm
Gee I am in my 60’s but I’ll tell you I’m 40 because you know, “It’s close enough!” ugh
Don’t worry, I’m not offended! I won’t wear anything around my neck at all, LOL. I can’t stand the feeling of being choked. I get tired of seeing all of those giant cowls all over etsy pages too.
crazy cat lady –
I actually meant specifically titles, not the body of the listings, and I profusely apologize for the confusion!
I can definitely understand and appreciate that there are sellers who keep methodical inventories on all their products, and I notice that a lot of my “hearts” use them. But much like you, in the listing description itself and not directly on the title.
Laura –
I love that the woman who started that thread is also trying to sell perfume samplers, some over half used.
Vintage my ass. Actually, according to Etsy TOU, my ass IS vintage.
leenie. Just went to regretsy updated today. I have been over there for the past half hr. laughing my ass off. The comments are hilarious.
I love callin’ out! You guys are fun! Glad that I found you!
ok, I must admit I’m not good at spotting resellers, but I found this on a treasury
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=20990867
It’s allowed? Something tells me….hmmm no.
Oh and I love regretsy too
ooohhh Laura congrats on finding another one!
Looks like she decorates the can… that part seems okay…
“Decorating” the can might by ok, but sticking all the mass produced stuff in (gift basket) must be marked as commericial and it’s not. I wrote Etsy and asked them about an idea I had and they told me it had to be marked commercial………..
MadebyM that’s what I thought. Gift basket in general I think are not allowed unless it’s everything handmade…I think.
Oh well, maybe since the items brakes the rules and it’s in a treasury will make the FP. I’m in that treasury too so prob that’s my shot……..
Pretty sure that gift basket is not allowed.
http://www.etsy.com/dosdonts.php#handmade
In the dos and don’ts there is a section on gift bakets.
If I ask this question in the forums, I think it would be considered calling out. Why are handmade jewelry, housewares, home decor, and mixed media art items which use vintage materials allowed to be in the Vintage Showcase? The sellers change the category tag to vintage for the showcase. and then change it back after their showcase slot expires. So a flag of these items never sticks. Other similar items in their shops are in the appropriate handmade category, so it’s not a mistake. It’s deliberate mis-tagging, and I guess Etsy allows it because those showcase spots are paid for by the seller? Maybe it’s just me, but I see these items every day in the vintage showcase and say WTF.
I don’t think gift baskets are allowed at all unless the items in the basket are handmade by the seller.
It was my understanding that the commercial tag is only use to differentiate between handmade supplies and commercially made ones.
I have another shop for you to check out. There are several Etsy sellers linked by this one blog. Two of them sell the same leather goods. One is in San Fran, one in Bangkok. The dog figurines and one set of salt and pepper shakers is also available on Ebay. It looks a bit suspicious.

There are more blogs linked to this one with the same merchandise. As far as I looked the blogs only contain photos and descriptions of merchandise. No personal stories, etc.
And where did I see the seller the first time? On the front page!
The featured shop has the usual suspect – a long stock number:
Luxurious sweetie couple doll salt pepper shaker/topper cake SH M0006

This is certainly not one person crafting these shirts at home….which is what Etsy should be about.
“This is certainly not one person crafting these shirts at home….which is what Etsy should be about.”
I completely disagree. Where is your proof that she’s not making them on her own? Please only “call out” with facts to back up your claims.
She’s screenprinting her original designs on Alternative Apparel t-shirts in her studio. Well within the definitions of “what Etsy should be about”.
“Selling commercial or mass-produced items in Etsy’s handmade categories is not permitted.”
Once you hire employees and sell your items all over the internet, you cease to be making “hand-made” items.
To me hand made means made with one’s own hands.
If I hire some workers and have them make my items, I am not making them myself.
Maybe it’s not what etsy is about now, but it was when they started.

leenie, I still don’t understand why you think that xenotees doesn’t fit the bill. She’s purchasing something and altering it with her own artwork and designs. Like…..someone who makes prints of their paintings, or someone who silkscreens onto a store-bought pillow or a tea towel, or someone who prints gift cards or tags. How is what she’s doing any different? It’s not mass-produced or commercial at all. It’s her art being applied, by her, herself, alone, onto purchased items. The fact that it’s relatively quick to do shouldn’t count against the artist.

I agree suspicious. The t-shirt seller is doing nothing wrong. She donates to EFA which is wonderful!
poppie I clicked on to the link you gave and BlueWitch did not have any items up!
Wartime Sickening isn’t it? So freakin frustrating.
Agree that gift baskets are not allowed and forget about the items in it. Oh My God.
That thread was epic. Too funny. To address the concerns expressed about those who show up yelling about it being against the rules to call out-I am somewhat on the fence about it myself. I used to say no don’t do it all. And that was because I would see people calling out people who sell supplies or vintage or who really did have handmade stuff but it just looked good enough to be store bought because they did not know the site rules or could not tell if an item was handmade or not, and I hated seeing those people dragged through the mud unecessarily. I still don’t like seeing it, but the longer you are on Etsy the easier it gets to spot the resellers, and Etsy won’t do a damn thing about them so now I can see how sometimes this is necessary, but I still don’t like seeing people called out by accident who are legit.
PussDaddy
What about the people who make diaper cakes and decorate them with store-bought toys and socks and bottles? I’ve also seen “cakes” made out of kitchen towels with kitchen utensils and stuff to decorate them. I think it’s a neat gift but is that a “gift basket”?
For some reason, Admin has decided that diaper cakes are ok. And that has spawned a myriad of other “cakes”, sadly.
The diaper cake is essentially a gift basket. There’s plenty of sites where they sell that stuff, why does it have to be on Etsy?
As to the T-shirts. If the seller is actually “screen printing” their own designs on it…..great! But, I believe the person is questioning if they are doing it themselves or having someone else do it. Once you include a 3rd party into producing your merchandise, it is no longer “hand-made, hand-altered or hand-assembled”. Once someone has “progressed” to that level (when they have a commercial manufacturer produce their items), then get your own website or sell wholesale, whatever. Etsy is SUPPOSED to be for the individual (or maybe a couple or a few friends) that actually do their craft by hand.
Just my .02 cents………….
“But, I believe the person is questioning if they are doing it themselves or having someone else do it.”
Yeah, you’re right. I totally get that that’s what’s going on, but questioning it and saying “This is certainly not one person crafting these shirts at home” are not the same thing. That’s an accusation, and there are no facts to back it up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for calling people out, but it’s damaging to someone’s reputation to have someone say they’re mass-producing when there are no facts to substantiate the claim. Sorry to derail, I don’t want to belabor this point over and over, just wanted to ask not to be accusatory without facts here.

……………………………………………………………….
That looks like silkscreen to me, nothing wrong with that.
But enough about the shirt . . . . how to I get the GUY? He’s hot.
yeah… I wouldn’t kick him out of my bed for eating crackers…
I agree with suspicious and kitten. The t-shirts are designed than printed like art prints on canvas or paper. You can crank out thousands that way. The T-shirt artist does the original design just like the artist does. They are printed on different sizes, different colors etc.
The main art sellers on Etsy sells prints/reproductions . It appears that one of the best t-shirt sellers does the same. Sounds smart to me.
