Bad Fruits- byemma

10 Jul

I reported this specific item to Etsy admin a while ago when the seller actually mentioned in the item description that she got these from her supplier.
She was obviously warned that including that statement was a no-no and removed it thus being able to keep the listing in her shop.

That seems to be all it takes to let someone purposely resell something on Etsy!

I saw this one on Regretsy yesterday!

The whole shop is reseller stuff, not just the paper fruit notes.

    Like this item

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/72389188/little-messager-pill-in-a-bottle

that offers free msg writing in English or….Chinese??? Seller ships from US.

I see the reseller PortugueseVintage was in Get The Look Decor today.

So I will be adding more documentation to their callout comments:

    http://etsycallout.wordpress.com/2011/06/20/portuguesevintage/

Way to go, Etsy, for promoting such an obvious reseller instead of an actual European vintage shop. Shame shame shame!

Damn… half the pics are even branded by the mass producer. :(

I have flagged other shops selling these same note pads, included the Alibaba link when flagging. Etsy has never taken the listings down. After a year these sellers are still happily selling. Guess I should have done the same thing, at least I wouldn’t have a shop just sitting and getting stagnant.

  5. PIF July 10, 2011 at 2:28 pm #

How do you actually manage to buy something on Alibaba? I need to buy a supply and it seems impossible to get a supplier to contact me. Totally baffled how these sellers do it. And no, I’m not a jewelry seller, and it would be a legitimate supply for me to make for my shop.

  6. Life During Wartime July 10, 2011 at 3:57 pm #

The signature in the lower right corner (is it Ling Ling Zhu?) appears in most of the items, including the cut paper pictures.

Also most of the Etsy listings include photos for items other than what is being sold.

This is one of the most blatant resellers I’ve seen on Etsy. What is stopping Etsy from shutting them down?

  7. em July 10, 2011 at 6:28 pm #

PIF- I think a lot of people buy through Ali Express. They have a shopping cart feature and you can buy right from the suppliers.

  8. JAC July 10, 2011 at 6:45 pm #

All the crap in this shop is mass produced. How in the heck is this shop still up and running?! Everytime I see anything with owls, I know that it is all non handmade… Shame on you shitty seller!

  9. JK July 11, 2011 at 2:29 am #

‘How in the heck is this shop still up and running?!’

Right look, plenty of fee money! That’s all Etsy cares about.

  10. cynicallyopenminded July 11, 2011 at 3:02 am #

I flagged them, a fat lot of good that will do. I’m convinced Etsy keeps the resellers for the $$$.

  11. KalinTheDestroyer July 11, 2011 at 5:31 am #

Etsy is a company in the business to make money, period. Rokali is a sellout asshole who probably convinces himself that it’s A-OK.
He wants to be Zuckerburg. How much money is enough? Did anyone think it would end up otherwise knowing Rob Kalin’s shady, unethical, and immature past? I sure didn’t expect any differently.

Every time I happen across anything written / quoted from Kalin it reminds me what a total idjit he is. A fat cat one, too, regardless of what bullshit comes out of his piehole. He hired people like him to start the site and he still thinks he has control? He can’t even control his own mouth; sounds like what he is, a college faker and drop out. No wonder he had to fake his credentials to attend an institute of higher learning– he doesn’t have the basic intestinal fortitude to do it the real way. It shows.

Etsy has done more to harm the public appreciation for handmade than anyone can realize. Kalin sucks, his employees suck, and the premise of the whole site sucks dead rats because it’s all about image and never about content or even the attempt at customer service. Fuck him, fuck them, and we are all fucked.

  12. pfft July 11, 2011 at 5:33 am #

You can buy that shit anywhere. Apparently nobody seems to be getting out and seeing shit anymore– and if that’s the case, I have some perfectly good staples I am willing to sell at a great price. Straight from anywhere you can buy office supplies.

  13. pfft July 11, 2011 at 5:43 am #

Man, the only thing that keeps me from firing this missive off to “Emma” is self-protection.

“So you are in Las Vegas and New York at the same time? Perhaps you learned how to complete this remarkable feat by watching Las Vegas magic acts. Just who did the cutwork? Don’t tell me you did, because it is more unbelieveable than the idea of a person being in two places at the same time.
Yes, I did report you, and no, I doubt it will matter. A person who will misrepresent themselves in one major way cannot be trusted to be aboveboard in anything else.
Have a wonderful, guiltfree day. I am sure you will.”

  14. Dee July 11, 2011 at 7:44 am #

Those little note pads seem to etsy-ish. I wouldn’t doubt that they have been on the FP a few times. People/shops are just plain greedy, out to make a buck.

I do blame etsy as they should be monitoring this shit. The site continues to grow and the resellers are out of control. Adding an employee or two will not fix this. Why is Etsy so forgiving and letting the motherfuckers stay? I might as well shop at Wal-mart unless I know something is truly handmade.

  15. TootieSkates July 11, 2011 at 9:21 am #

Just exactly how is this recycled? She has several items listed this way. The listing is hysterical. The rest of the shop is full of iffy crap.

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/72892710/recycled-faux-leather-zipper-accent

  16. Life During Wartime July 11, 2011 at 9:34 am #

I think that in that shop

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/peekatmeaccessories?ref=seller_info

‘recycled’ means I buy it at the thrift shop and sell it to you. Or something like that.

I’m not an expert on clothing and accessories, but when I see shoes with a 5 inch heel made in China listed as 80s I say uh uh.

Careless presentation. Mentions designer in titles, but not in the description, shows no tags. Some items listed in the wrong categories — she didn’t handmake any of this stuff. I see loads of recent flowery ‘boho’ stuff. A mess.

  17. Discord Threads July 11, 2011 at 9:42 am #

Etsy is just a freakin JOKE! At least at AF they don’t deny there are resellers, and they are trying to find a place to stick them (I have an idea.) Etsy pretends they aren’t resellers at all. Go along with the con artist who started the hipster haven…

  18. Life During Wartime July 11, 2011 at 9:57 am #

    I hear you, Discord Threads.

But if Art Fire decides to create a special section for reseller stores (is that what the studios are called now?), what will shops do that resell on Etsy as well as Art Fire? What will be done on AF about partial reseller shops, like the infamous PortugueseVintage?

  19. Fake July 11, 2011 at 11:44 am #

Just exactly how is this recycled? She has several items listed this way. The listing is hysterical. The rest of the shop is full of iffy crap.

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/72892710/recycled-faux-leather-zipper-accent

    —————————————————————————————————————-
I think her idea of ‘recycled’ is: “I used this purse from Forever 21 and it no longer fits my style, so I’m passing it on to you for more than I originally paid. Enjoy!”

  20. Discord Threads July 11, 2011 at 11:47 am #

Don’t know the answer Life… But at least AF doesn’t pretend they aren’t there…YYStudios keeps reopening at AF, and their reseller, overpriced clothing annoys me to no end… Does this person perhaps think their fruit notepads are supplies???

  21. Life During Wartime July 11, 2011 at 12:20 pm #

Discord, the fruit notepads are listed as handmade paper goods on Etsy. Who would not know they are a reseller item? You don’t have to be a paper artisan to know what they are at a glance. The item has been in 7 treasuries and hearted over 70 times. The treasury count speaks volumes about what other Etsy sellers perceive as ‘handmade’.

Here’s a link to all the treasuries reseller byemma has been in and curated:

    http://www.etsy.com/treasury/search/?search_query=byemma&search_submit=&search_type=treasury

Most members of the Etsy community wouldn’t recognize a reseller shop or item, even if there was a watermark on the photo saying ‘I found this cute stuff on AliExpress’. The people who particiape here hold a minority view of what ‘site integrity’ should mean on Etsy.

  22. Discord Threads July 11, 2011 at 12:59 pm #

Etsy has site integrity?!? Like the sawdust in a jar that made the FP???

  23. Life During Wartime July 11, 2011 at 2:14 pm #

As silly as it is, sawdust in a jar is just as much hand assembled as charm on a chain jewelry. There’s a difference, I think, between rule-breaking and weird aesthetics. As much as I laugh at vintage shops on Etsy listing 20+ year old items in fair-poor condition — and then getting them promoted on the front page — it’s Etsy legal, not a fauxtique.

  24. Lame July 11, 2011 at 4:16 pm #

Yup. the weird aesthetics is entertaining, but the fauxtique is just plain blatant. There are just too many stooopid people in the world.

  25. Lisa July 11, 2011 at 5:30 pm #

Completely off topic, but is this allowed? It seems like drop shipping to me…

    http://www.etsy.com/people/Vivamamere

  26. Life During Wartime July 11, 2011 at 6:12 pm #

Lisa, I can’t speak for Etsy, but I would say it is not drop shipping if the person in Indiana is really the daughter of the woman making the clothing.

If most of her business is in the Northern Hemisphere (North America, Europe, Asia), then it makes business sense to mail larger packages of clothing to her daughter who will mail items as purchased. It is not the same thing as hiring a stranger to make something and have that stranger mail it, while the shop owner just collects the payment. This is probably one of the more acceptable concepts of an international collective that I’ve seen. Just my opinion.

  27. Lisa July 11, 2011 at 6:30 pm #

Good points LDW. I’m just confused I guess. European designs, made in Argentina and shipped from Indiana? Whew…

  28. Life During Wartime July 11, 2011 at 6:52 pm #

But like I said, Lisa, I don’t set policy for Etsy. (Heh, wish I did!) This may be breaking the rules. But if you can design a purse and have it made in an overseas factory, then I can’t see why you can’t have your daughter handle the mailing for your shop. Dunno.

  29. PussDaddy July 11, 2011 at 7:21 pm #

What a coincidence-I’m out of staples.

  30. marie July 11, 2011 at 8:21 pm #

ummm – what the heck is this on the front page:

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/77465298/15-vintage-orange-carnival-or-movie?ref=fp_treasury_1

15 tickets for $2 plus shipping??

vintage tickets?? you can buy 2000 fr $7.95

    http://www.centurynovelty.com/detail_129_427-040.html

  31. Life During Wartime July 11, 2011 at 9:01 pm #

Good one, Marie. The Etsy listing isn’t for admission tickets (admit one) like the title says. They are raffle tickets (keep this coupon) just like the link to Century Novelty. Probably not vintage!

  32. Holly July 12, 2011 at 5:32 am #

Bye Emma…thank you Etsy for shutting her down.

  33. TheBargainBabe July 12, 2011 at 6:52 am #

Sweet! The whole shop is gone! WOW

  34. cynicallyopenminded July 12, 2011 at 7:39 am #

Cool! Someone is actually working at Etsy today.

  35. Life During Wartime July 12, 2011 at 10:21 am #

Here’s a link to the empty shop so we can see what happens:

“I change my favorite color every year because I believe that they are all special and unique in their own way. As each year I grow, my tastes change as I learn new ideas and points of views. If I have to stay with one color for the rest of my life I would be bored. ”

So her favorite color changes every single year? And she’s not bored? I sure am, with her.

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/75502457/super-cute-memo-pads-and-more-sold-at

I like how she whines that Etsy will no longer let her sell them.

  38. Discord Threads July 13, 2011 at 6:37 am #

OFFS! Now Etsy is letting her whine and link to her website? How nice of Etsy. They claimed they closed my ID/shop and banned me for posting a link to my AF site in my announcement, and my items ARE all handmade by me. This reseller is allowed to remain and pimp their website. All the dollar store carp she’s selling is about as handmade as the machine that makes them…sheesh Etsy – glad to see you support the reseller’s pimping their site, but will kick out true handmade artists who do the same…

  39. christine July 13, 2011 at 7:00 am #

    I am speechless

  40. christine July 13, 2011 at 7:01 am #

    WAIT
Isn’t this her selling what she said she cant sell? WTF?

  41. christine July 13, 2011 at 7:01 am #

  42. Life During Wartime July 13, 2011 at 9:30 am #

Etsy is allowing her to stay open with these reseller items for sale AND give her website addy in her descriptions? Wow, that’s looking out for sellers so they don’t take a financial hit for breaking the rules. Etsy — the site that gives tender loving care to reseller shops.

  43. Discord Threads July 13, 2011 at 9:31 am #

Normal Etsy inconsistency. PLEASE someone report this shop… Not only are those NOT handmade, but she links to her personal selling site all over the place…items, announcement… Sheesh Etsy – Ya banned me for doing that… Well, I really know you banned me cause I kept pointed out that the emperor is NAKED, but anyway…REPORT IT!

  44. TheBargainBabe July 13, 2011 at 12:11 pm #

Whoops I think I commented on the wrong post a minute ago. Meant to comment here that I reported more of those stupid fruit notepads and the listing that links to off-site. But I don’ think that person is the same as byemma.

  45. cynicallyopenminded July 13, 2011 at 12:26 pm #

I don’t think its the same person either. Her banner, announcement, product descriptions. Do you think her graphics are original? If she is going to resell, it makes me wonder about her other stuff.

  46. marie July 13, 2011 at 3:54 pm #

i don’t know for sure, but as a GD, her “style” in each design is pretty different . . . some are totally “clip art” while some are more sketchy – some are beveled and shadowed, some aren’t – most designer’s stick to a certain style. . . but hey, she could be like whats -her-name who changes her favorite color, she may change her style.. :)

  47. TootieSkates July 15, 2011 at 4:20 am #

    They are still for sale:

You know? I am fucking amazed, I can’t find one of those fruit memo pads on etsy:
