The cast iron is typical junk. People do like to toss the word ‘vintage’ around, don’t they? It seems to mean whatever they want it to mean.

Today on Etsy’s blog post: Daily Candy Crush features multiple handmade (?) and vintage listings from Mclovebuddy http://www.etsy.com/shop/Mclovebuddy – why? Is the Daily Candy Crush curator the owner of Mclovebuddy? If so, that should be mentioned. No name or “ships from” location in this shop.
Todays Etsy Finds email called Bagging RIghts featured MOSTLY mass produced bags from Thialand, Vietnam and Korea. You can tell from the pictures that they aren’t handmade. Anyone else notice that?
I don’t subscribe to Etsy Finds because I do not trust any of the staffers to know what the hell they are doing, period. It took two or three of those emails to piss me off so royally that I had to unsubscribe.
keep in mind that Alibaba is famous for stealing Etsy sellers photos and listing the items for sale…….How would anyone know if those items aren’t handmade? They look it to me.
Just be sure you are absolutely 100% positive before calling out…..just sayin.
I didn’t see a problem with “Bagging rights” either….maybe one of them….but it is ok and Etsy legal to use a premade tote and embelish it or even screen print it.
it’s also ok to use mass produced charms and string them on a chain and call them handmade….ugh…that one bothers me.
Gina, these bags were not embelished in any way. They were exactly like the bags you would buy at any retail store such as Penneys, Macy’s, Walmart etc.

I don’t think the letters, supposedly made from the wood of old Indonesian ships, are vintage (how they are listed). The listings say the paint on them may vary from the picture…sounds like a new imported decor item made from salvaged wood.

itstinks – regarding the bags from stylebari…. I purchased one of her bags and as a professional seamstress I can tell you it was 100% handmade. Just because Alibaba and ebay steal photographs to resell or replicate, or just because YOU don’t thinks something is not handmade does not make it so.
Based on comments from Etsy admins in the forums, some of them think that anything made with or from a vintage item is itself vintage.
The illogic works something like this:
If I go to an unfinished furnishing store and buy a small piece and paint or finish or embellish it myself, then I can list it as handmade. I do not have to make the chair or occasional table or frame myself; embellishing or altering (painting or finishing) makes the item handmade.
If I pick up a vintage small piece at a thrift or on the curb side, and refinish it or paint it or embellish it, it is still vintage! Because I didn’t make the chair or occasional table or the frame myself.
Vintage is always vintage, but altered new items are handmade.
