Just came across your blog, pointed out to me by another seller who thought I’d be interested, and I’ve got a reseller for you. This shop has been on Etsy since March 21, 2008.

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5726325

They’ll have 10-15 pages of the exact same item. They are selling these exact pieces on ebay as well, except there they don’t bother lying saying they “handmake the chains.”

Exhibit one:

Etsy – http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=26573806

Ebay – http://cgi.ebay.com/STEAMPUNK-VICTORIAN-VAMPIRE-style-GOTHIC-POCKET-WATCH_W0QQitemZ390082892807QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad2c09407&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

Exhibit two:

Ebay – http://cgi.ebay.com/VICTORIAN-STYLE-Repousee-Silver-POCKET-WATCH-LARP-WAR_W0QQitemZ390082890198QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad2c089d6&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

Exhibit Four:

They’ve been flagged by multiple members of three different teams over the course of the last six months, and they’re still there.

Those exact watches can be bought from another seller on ebay for $10 each! Here’s the link http://jewelry.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=pocket&_sacat=14324&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_dmpt=Wristwatches&_ssn=timeholders&_odkw=&_osacat=14324

  2. imwithya September 10, 2009 at 2:23 pm #

If you can find a $10 on in the exact style as ones the Etsy seller has listed then definitely report with a link. Unfortunately all they have to do is list the watches as supplies to be ok with Etsy anyway. Ugh.

  3. TheNakedPenis September 10, 2009 at 2:46 pm #

I think I might just one of those.
If I do , it’ll be from ebay “cheapskate”

  4. JK September 10, 2009 at 4:03 pm #

Even if the pages and pages of identical listings didn’t give it away, the prices would.

    Steampunk is played.
This seller is a powerdork, get them OFF Etsy and make way for HANDMADE articles by craftspeople that give a MF damn.

The Friday reseller rush has begun. Here’s a shop where you can get iPods. I’ve flagged but we’ll see how long this takes.

  7. tailor'sgirl September 11, 2009 at 4:27 am #

How come Etsy just doesn’t eliminate the reseller and vintage rule and be done with it?

  8. Gern Blanston September 11, 2009 at 5:58 am #

    Check out this vintage seller:

So now Etsy is the place to buy iPods and cell phones? Why can’t they hire personnel to at least give a quick look at new stores. Something like this would be gone in two seconds.

Since when is it a crime to make some extra money?
Who appointed you people the “Etsy Police”?
Maybe , just maybe, you should find something constructive to do with your time instead of bothering/living vicariously threw hard working people trying to pay their bills.
NEWS FLASH! If Etsy had a problem with my shop , would I still be there?
So suck it up and live with it.
If anyone is interested in some handmade jewelry I might consider a discount.
Just mention you seen my shop on the self appointed Etsy Police Blog and you know what they say , There Is No Such Thing As Bad Press.
I have some beautiful handmade jewelry to make.
    What will YOU do today?
    Blog about me??????

Hey, asshole, there is nothing wrong with making money. But your stuff should be listed and sold on the proper site for it. Etsy is for handmade items, and people work hard to make them, and your cheap reseller crap is an insult to all these folks and cheapens the stuff they make just because it has to associate with your cheap crap. Tempus fugit means time flies, or time flees, so why don’t you tempusfugit your non-handmade reseller crap the hell off of Etsy. And I wouldn’t expect my email in-box to be inundated with requests for any of your handmade crap either if I were you, at least not by anyone who posts here.

  13. PussDaddy September 11, 2009 at 7:36 am #

Besides, you are too stupid to have a shop policy or even a profile on your Etsy shop, and I know I would never buy from anyone too lazy to fill out this stuff. And I don’t know why other people buy from them either.

Keep your resale stuff on Ebay, and put your Handmade stuff on Etsy.

If you really are the real tempusfugit, and I can’t believe you are (and sincerely hope you aren’t,) the point is that we Etsy sellers who really really make our stuff, also really really care that our marketplace isn’t cluttered up with people just pretending. You know?

Make a buck by all means – but you have your legitimate places to sell, so why not sell there?

Playing devil’s advocate here, since he is adding a chain to the watches, it’s technically ‘hand assembled’ and allowable by etsy rules. snort.
I just feel bad for buyers who think they are getting something handmade when they buy off of etsy. How long before etsy gets the reputation of being ‘your place for all things, some of them may be handmade, but most are mass produced pieces of junk’?

tempus fugit- you have 2100 pocket watches listed right now! Are you telling us you made those by hand? What if someone were to buy them all at once as a large order- would you have them in stock to ship to the customer? Why list HUNDREDS of the exact same style in your shop? Did Etsy tell you to keep those listing fees coming in or they would have to shut you down?

Assembled stuff is legit on Etsy, and is considered handmade. Attaching a single bead to an earwire or a pendant to a chain is ‘assembled’.

  29. sue September 11, 2009 at 11:28 am #

You have a point. As much as I hate to admit that. “eye roll”

A pendant to a chain is assembled???
Come on who hell is making these rules?? Retards??

  31. imwithya September 11, 2009 at 11:44 am #

I understand the assembled stuff is allowed on Etsy but it looks like this .99 watch on Ebay, which is very similar the gunmetal one tempus fugit sells, comes WITH a chain. So what exactly is being “assembled”? Is it simply the act of attaching the chain that makes it legit- even if it’s a chain that comes with the watch from the wholesale supplier? Or I guess just stating that you “made” the chain is enough proof for etsy.

    .99 cent Ebay watch:

    ****************

Tempus, I think we both know the problem isn’t earning money. It’s using a “handmade” site to destash an awful lot of watches. Do you really hand-make and assemble each chain for your thousands of watches? I wouldn’t trust you enough to buy one and find out. It’s tacky. Besides, there are other sites that have no problem with you, whether you honestly “hand assemble” or otherwise.

Etsy is targeted to those looking for handmade crafts, supplies, and vintage. Do you see how you might be selling customers short?

As for whether you fall within the TOU, maybe Etsy admins haven’t reviewed your shop. And that’s what a lot of us are bent on accomplishing: scoring you a review. Hope you hold up.

  53. imwithya September 12, 2009 at 11:11 am #

Please Brit understand that some of us DO have successful shops and we’re still angry that Etsy allows people to sell mass produced crap and items made by craftsman in poor countries, and pass it off as their own handmade products. And sometimes it’s as easy to do as putting “I made this” in their listings until someone proves otherwise to Etsy by sending links as to where the items can be purchased wholesale. I don’t spend my whole day worrying about this stuff but if I want to check the call out blog while I have my coffee in the morning or a break in the afternoon I don’t see why it should bother you.

And Tempus- I had pretty much stopped caring about your shop until you decided to come here and act like a total dick. You’ve renewed my energy to keep searching for wholesale pocket watches (with incorrect Roman numerals lol).

  54. imwithya September 12, 2009 at 11:23 am #

Well it seems that for ages many pocket watches/clocks have used incorrect Roman numeral fours. Oh well…. still searching.

  55. meh September 12, 2009 at 11:45 am #

reselling on etsy is a problem because many who shop on etsy are looking for a more conscientious way to shop.

we trust that artisans are in fact making these products. we have the option to buy on etsy locally, free from sweatshop labor, and unfair employee treatment.

when a reseller sets up shop, claiming items are handmade, the opportunity to shop in this way becomes difficult.

there are appropriate venues for reselling. please utilize those marketplaces instead of etsy.

I’m sure it’s what they claim, but I’m also sure it’s not handmade.

They list their Loc as Guangzhou. I’ve been in the bead business and that is where many, many wholesalers of pearls and beads are located. They can probably get those neckalces for 5-10% of US retail.

  62. Tempusfugit April 16, 2010 at 5:20 pm #

just ran across your site, fun! although, this is the REAL Tempusfugit! That person writing in my stead back in Sept is obviously trying to screw me up. OK, so here is the answer to all the interest. I DO NOT HAND MAKE THE WATCHES. pretty simple really. I do not go to the mountains and mine the ore to smelt the metal to pore into molds, nor do I silver or gold plate. Nor do I gunmetal. Nor do I put all the links together to make a chain. What I do, and this has been explained to Etsy (although my shop is horrendous for information, I will admit that!:) I do not make the paint or the brushes or the canvas, I paint the painting. I put the PARTS TOGETHER. I get these parts from my contacts in the watch making industry, so no sweat shop assembly unless you consider my musty old basement in Connecticut as comparable to something in China or India! I find it interesting that this fact is so hard for some to understand, that most of the steampunk genre of products available on etsy is just glue together junk, often broken versions of the same stuff I use to make fully functional watches! as to why so many listings with same image, I list on esty as often as possible in order to have my items appear in the front page, newly listed section. It is not my fault etsy leaves items up for 3 months. In my shop I clearly state I make each watch to order. I do sell on Ebay as well, and I do not have to make any ‘claims’ on ebay as to its handmade or not, so it isn’t something I make a big stink about over there as it isn’t why people shop on Ebay. but I prefer Etsy, the people are cooler not so corporate and often the buyers are the nicest folks you could ever meet.
I just find this whole argument funny. I have it regularly on etsy, about what exactly constitutes handmade, and I prefer that some intervention in the item is necessary, which is what I try to do, I offer items you won’t see anywhere else but in my ebay shop, especially my glow lines. But hey, I don’t know who was writing before pretending to be me, that person was very disrespectful, something I pride myself on not being, I prefer to be calm and professional so I can only assume it was someone gunning for me!
thanks so much and best regards,

I’ve been reading TF’s feedback, and even tho it says 96% positive, it looks like every other comment has something negative to say (even if they clicked “positive”). I guess clicking negative would upset the cupcake-cart and hurt someone’s iddy biddy feewings.
