For pete’s tweet STOP putting these damn Bodhi Leaf lights on the FP! A super quick Google comes up with:

Krishna Arts is supplied by
___________________________________________________________________________ is very suspect with her “vintage” shop, it looks more like the dollar store.

Should hchappycat SUPER CUTE MP3 ipod Earphone Tidy Wrap Winder‘s (though yes, super cute) be allowed as supplies? What are they supplying in the creative process other than neatness?

“ is very suspect with her “vintage” shop, it looks more like the dollar store.”

Ugh. I didn’t think of the dollar store directly, I thought of a very well picked over thrift store. About 2/3rds of her store stock is less than 20 years old, MIC crap but used, not dollar store fresh.

To hipster, idiot, booze swilling, pot smoking Etsy employees, I’m sure it all looks legit.

Does anyone ever wonder about Maria? Do you think she has any idea of just how useless most of these admin twits are to Etsy?

Am I crazy for expecting her to give a flying fuck?

Lord, I am so tired of it all. Shall we start a new handmade and vintage site, all of us together? Because all of this is so rank.

There seems to be this gray area that Etsy doesn’t like to address – Handmade but possibly not handmade by the seller. I recall reading a story on Etsy about a successful Etsy seller who makes bibs and burp cloths with designer cotton prints (so original, right?) and she admits in the article that she pays local sewers to make them to keep up with demand. This is allowed? So what if the person selling those leaf flower lights DOES make them and got the idea from the mass produced lights? How does Etsy know the difference? They probably can’t and so they err on the side of caution. I donno… what do you all think?

  4. Bedazzled Condom September 30, 2009 at 12:05 pm #

I once believed they erred on the side of caution.

Now I believe they err on the side of *stoopid*

The Ipod Earphone wrapper………a supply? Are you attaching it to a necklace as a pendant or something? No, you carry it with the Ipod. NOT A SUPPLY! You can even see the manufacturer’s name and copyright mark!

Yes, I think a new website needs to be started and it can be called Ex- Esty, “your place to buy and sell REAL things handmade”!

  6. Keeping It Real September 30, 2009 at 12:26 pm #

Gosh, I can’t even spell Etsy right because I am so frustrated!

  7. Hmmm.. September 30, 2009 at 12:27 pm #

Ugh! I was going to buy my daughter some of those lights! I hate that they’re not handmade and were on the FP so many times. A-flagging i will go….

  8. imwithya September 30, 2009 at 12:37 pm #

Honestly, what ISN’T a supply? Those ipod cord things could be embellished with a rhinestone eye and sold as “hand-altered” right? Basically ANYTHING can be hand-altered so anything can be listed as a supply. People must be making stuff with all the ready made cutesie Asian stationery products that are for sale on Etsy right?

And since shipping supplies are allowed, why not hallmark cards if you use them as thank yous in your packages? Or massed produced candy (some people just love to put meltable food items in with their handmade orders)? Maybe I’ll start listing Hershey’s kisses as packing materials.

  9. girl September 30, 2009 at 12:57 pm #

The Etsy definition of “handmade” is putting two things together.

So… technically I handmake an iPod every time I plug my earbuds into my shuffle.

That is how you get earbuds as a supply.

Here’s an interesting case of blatant shilling:

User beadstyle had some major issues with customers not receiving their items in a timely manner and feedback reflected it. What’s a person to do?

It looks like beadstyle used her other shop, CatalystPhotography, to artificially pump up her feedback score.

Consider the location of both shops, Richmond, VA and the birthday of both owners, August 17th. Check out the pictures from these two shops-

beadstyle pay careful attention to the labels used in this listing

    CatalystPhotography labels?

CatalystPhotography has left 13 positive feedbacks on beadstyles’ shop, all posted on 9/25 for items all purchased on 9/25- but has received no feedback at all in return.

Also suspect, is the presence of another shop, Rivercityburner who left six positive feedbacks for beadstyle on 9/25 for items purchased on 9/25- yet again, has no feedback at all in return.

This entire thing seems super fishy to me and it doesn’t help that dear “probably” shilling beadstyle was also featured on the front page today.

Does anyone else find this a bit odd?

those lights are on the front page as I type this. they don’t have any materials listed, that should be a clue right there. oh, well, etsy just doesn’t seem to care at all…

  12. stacey September 30, 2009 at 2:59 pm #

someone buy those damn lights already….

  13. Lindsey September 30, 2009 at 3:49 pm #

a lot of the “supplies” from the earphone holder lady are questionable

  14. Sandy September 30, 2009 at 3:54 pm #

Here’s a little something I noticed while scrolling through recently listed items:

Direct quote from their shop policies:

Not sure if this shop has been called out in the past on this blog…

  15. Ambergris September 30, 2009 at 4:01 pm #

Wait – did I miss something? I thought this blog was moved, yet when I go to the new blog, it just posts links to here.

  16. JK September 30, 2009 at 4:33 pm #

Good one, Sandy. I like this especially (emphasis mine):

“Etsy – Your place to buy and sell all things.”

  19. Chantelle September 30, 2009 at 6:27 pm # definitely has non-vintage items. At least one pair of shoes for sale in her store says “90s” in the title. Also, she has a fossil belt for sale … and according to fossil’s website, they didn’t start making belts until the 90s.

I don’t know enough about figurines to know about all that stuff.

I am so sick and tired of seeing this garage sale crap on etsy.

And honestly, I wish etsy would revise their definitions of handmade and supply. I think supplies should be for things out of which a person could handmake an item and then sell them on etsy. Personally, I don’t think that tools like paintbrushes should be included as a supply. ipod wrappers shouldn’t ever be supplies.

I think handmade should be something other than “add a rhinestone” or “purchased charm on a purchased chain”. Seriously. Something should only be considered handmade if the artisan has designed and created it themselves and the finished product is substantially different from each of the component parts.

So adding a rhinestone or a ribbon to something wouldn’t alter the original something enough and it wouldn’t be handmade. I know those definitions aren’t perfect but they’d be a start.

I also wish etsy (or even a team of volunteers) would review new shop listings and take action right away when things are incorrectly listed.

    So many wishes….

  20. Are you naked, too? September 30, 2009 at 6:27 pm #

If any of that jewelry is handmade by the shop owner, I’ll eat one of those rings. And WITHOUT ketchup!

  21. Life During Wartime September 30, 2009 at 6:58 pm #

The fascination they have with promoting the leaf lights is so WTF. Last time I checked, similar items from this seller were in 2 Gift Guides! If you’re a crafter you have to realize the amount of work it would take to create a string of those lights, and know this is not a Mompreneur sitting around the dining table with her toddlers putting that together…in that kind of quantity for that kind of price. Besides it being a really boring assembly job, and not a creative joyful process. Etsy isn’t even pretending to care very much about ‘handmade by the seller’ any longer. That didn’t last long.

  22. grumpy September 30, 2009 at 7:11 pm #

I’m so bizarrely fascinated by those lights. I mean, there are so many red flags – no location, brand new seller with super high quality photos (most newbies take a few weeks/months to really get a handle on the photography), product that could really only be handmade at that price by someone in a factory being paid pennies a day, 10 seconds with google gets you the source…and they keep popping up on the front page! WTF!

  23. Keeping It Real October 1, 2009 at 6:46 am #

The shop Sandy pointed out refers to placing “bids” so you know they probably have an Ebay shop, too! But look at the cost of the jewelry…………..$ talks when it comes to removing a shop or not! Good money to be made for Etsy when the stuff sells!

There is no doubt Etsy needs some major revamping or they are going to end up losing their real artists and craftpersons and then it’s going to be just another Ebay minus the auctions. Very sad…………..

  24. Bedazzled Condom October 1, 2009 at 7:22 am #

Has anyone mentioned this shop or is she off-limits because she has cute and furry animals on her website?

  25. HOLY COW!!! October 1, 2009 at 8:14 am #

HOLY COW! Funkyshique is on the FP right now! It MAY very well be possible that admin reads this blog and is playing with y’all the way a cat toys with a mouse before biting its head off.

  26. Life During Wartime October 1, 2009 at 8:39 am #

Etsy admin is trying to ‘play’ with a bunch of blog participants complaining about how Etsy staff doesn’t follow the rules of the site they work for by breaking their own rules more often? Wow, that’s some clever strategy.

BTW, there is no issue with Funky’s burlap banners and the other stuff she handmakes; that has been posted here repeatedly. There is no reason why any handmade by the seller item shouldn’t be on the FP.

Except that funkyshique titles and labels these items as “vintage”, not handmade. If they were tagged properly there would be no problem with those.

  28. HOLY COW!!! October 1, 2009 at 10:16 am #

    still such a co-ink-e-dence, no?

  29. imwithya October 1, 2009 at 11:47 am #

She was featured on the front page right at the time the ranting and raving was going on here. I think it’s only because her banners are cute and many are halloween themed, nothing more.

  30. imwithya October 1, 2009 at 12:13 pm #

Wait a minute I may have to retract that! I just got an “Etsy Success” email about packaging ideas that features a Hong Kong seller that sells cutesie “supplies” like notebooks, pencil cases, erasers, diaries… how are these craft/shipping supplies? They’re elementary school supplies, yes.

Maybe they do read this blog and feature items and sellers we’ve talked about just to fuck with us. 😉

  31. jenjasmine October 2, 2009 at 2:26 am #

I wish I had never found this blog. It makes me so depressed.

  32. Keeping It Real October 2, 2009 at 10:51 am #

Well, then we need to start talking crap about our own shops and see if they show up on the FP! LOL!

Bedazzled’s inquiry regarding a shop with animals in it does not have any items for sale right now……….and not in vacation mode? I wonder what’s up?

  33. PussDaddy October 2, 2009 at 8:51 pm #
