Sock Monkeys & $2 rings

24 Nov

A) They have been kicked off the site before – and just signed up under a different name.

B) This is a Chinese company: ( Yes, handmade, but sure as hell not by one person… they are all over the wholesale sites and offer special deals on 500 sock dolls or more.

What annoys me is that people can just come back under a different name, and even flagging them doesn’t seem to work. It took me months to get their first shop closed, and is probably taking me months to get their new shop closed again.

In the meantime, they are selling like crazy – which is no wonder with those prices. But who can compete with a Chinese sweat shop?

Wow, a shop full of $2 rings and other super cheap jewelry. Insane.

The ring shop — wtf? These are listed as handmade by the seller, and he sold a couple hundred of them for 2 bucks plus $2.50 shipping?

Etsy could have software set up to grab listings like that for staff review. It shouldn’t be up to the community, or even ECO, to identify resellers like this.

If Etsy is so concerned about calling out in the forums and blogs, they need to shoulder most of the burden of spotting and removing shops that are so obviously 100% reseller merchandise.

The rings are definitely the stuff you will find at a flea market! Gosh, even the foam it’s displayed in is dirty from all the handling at the flea markets! Even if this person set the rings, he’d have to charge more than $2.50! That is ridiculous!

And they both have lots of sales….just don’t get it.

Thanks for posting about the ring site.

All I was trying to do was find a pretty handmade or vintage ring or two. And was so mad after finding that damn shop I quit.

    Truly Insane.

Remember the blanket that was tagged incorrectly? Picked by admin for the FP. sighs.

Awood616 is out of vacation mode and back in business, speaking of blatent jewelry resellers!!

Maybe Etsy should add an area just for resellers. That way those of us who want handmade can find it without having to weed through the crap from China and Etsy gets their fees.

  8. MadeByM**** November 25, 2009 at 6:14 am #

Etsy just needs to start a new SEPARATE site! One for the “real” handmade stuff and one for the rest………..(vintage, supplies, mature/erotic, manufactured). I’m getting to the point that I don’t want my stuff associated with 5 year old vintage, dildos, vagina necklaces, bandanas proclaiming your sexual fetish, pill shaped pillows with a nude model, and mass produced dollar store junk)!

  9. Laura November 25, 2009 at 7:04 am #

Another vintage seller. 1990’s. I give up.

  10. Laura November 25, 2009 at 7:04 am #

She has tons on non vintage:

You know this is just so effin sickening. They always get the sales too and that really pisses me off. They are taking money away from Etsians who really make the hand made or legitimate vintage. They are nothing but thieves. They need to peddle in through JUNKY JOES CRAP SHOP ! Leave Etsy Alone..

OMG I sound like the Brittney Spear’s Kook!

MadeByM**** you just killed your own argument by defining that the Etsy problem is that they have stuff that YOU don’t like.

If you were arguing that Etsy should significantly separate non-handmade to segregate vintage, supplies and manufactured, your argument would have been fairly sensible.

By tossing in mature/erotic, you decide Etsy shouldn’t accept handmade dildos, handmade felted vaginas, and what else – nude art? underwear & lingerie? fabric menstrual pads? handmade cloth diapers or diaper covers?

Where does the line get drawn for handmade items that are unacceptable because they upset you personally?

Granny is still reselling her PEruvian coop puppets (which she has been makingf or 50 years LMAO)

  14. MadeByM**** November 25, 2009 at 11:37 am #

I didn’t say I didn’t like mature/erotic stuff……just don’t want be selling in the same venue as stuff like that. Just my opinion, and it sure doesn’t count for crap on Etsy!

  15. Smartass November 25, 2009 at 11:44 am #

That’s why Etsy requires any mature item’s main picture to say “mature” without actually showing the offending item. If you want to see it, you must click on it. Otherwise, move on and shut up.

Don’t wanna be associated with it? That’s fine too. Quit Etsy, then try to find a completely pure and innocent venue for selling your high and mighty goods. And make sure to post a link!

I hate to say this but the best way to discourage resellers from setting up shop on Etsy is for Etsy to raise their fees to match eBay.

  17. HandmadeOnEtsy_YeahRight November 25, 2009 at 1:36 pm #

Flagged the whole sock shop. “Handmade by me” Sure..

    Etsy is really annoying me.

We cant call out yet they don’t answer emails or consider flags. Might as well shop at wal-mart. Same customer service, same crap.

BTW isn’t Etsy owned by wal-mart. Somewhere through the train of ownership I thought I read that.

  18. Life During Wartime November 25, 2009 at 3:27 pm #

CMOM — I agree! The fee structure at Etsy should be revised. If the site was organized better, it would make more sense to pay a small monthly fee for having a shop than to pay renewal fees to be seen.

Monthly shop fees are known to discourage flea market sellers.

Etsy, your place to buy and resell all things!!

Then go to another site. Personally I am not fond of crochet work but that doesn’t mean I think crochet artists should not be allowed on Etsy.

Those sock dolls are straight out of a book! I own it and altho they are cute, yuppers surely are not all handmade! True sock animals are each unique bc u can never make each one quite the same.

  22. notvintage November 27, 2009 at 6:47 pm #

This shop is selling seeds and bulbs, advertising in the vintage showcase, and is SO WRONG. You should do a visual on it, flagging doesn’t work but this blog gets the job done.,
Great photos-but what’s selllning is flower bulbs and tree seeds, for goodness sakes.

  23. Life During Wartime November 27, 2009 at 8:44 pm #

notvintage — your nym says it all! She’s already flipped the mimosa back to Plants. Yesterday (I think it was) she had several of her listings for the red spider lily bulbs flipped to Vintage for the showcase.

This is abusing the system, and she’s not the only one who does it. Since Etsy provides no enforced rules, or any ethical standards, it’s become a case of Etsy Shop Owners Gone Wild, exposing their irrelevant merchandise anywhere they might be seen.

It really does no good to flag shops that do this because any action from admin is delayed so much the item is already back in the proper category for days when the flag msg is finally read.

I’ve never browsed the vintage category and not seen one or more items that aren’t vintage with their category flipped for the showcase. Etsy isn’t going to do squat about it because sellers are paying them for a waiver on the TOU.

  24. Amused November 28, 2009 at 1:53 am #

If the admins at Etsy think that rings can be handmade and sold for $2.00, they need to seek employment elsewhere. What an absolute insulting joke that this shop is still up and selling. Idiots!!! Oh yeah, and the MAC make-up? Really? Still there? TOU’s much?

  25. Amused November 28, 2009 at 3:10 am #

    Speaking of cheap rings, really?

  26. Amused November 28, 2009 at 3:14 am #

Makes the other $2.00 ring guy look like a loser.

  27. meg January 13, 2010 at 8:41 am #

i would rather pay 3x that for a sock monkey made by someone from the U.S. Lead poisoning and other poisoning on childrens toys made in china EVEN DISNEY ones were in the news recently.

  28. Dria February 17, 2011 at 12:25 pm #
