Indochine and PaperAlly

http://www.etsy.com/shop/INDOCHINEnatural

apparently employed some good ol’ shilling to boost their feedback. A customer bought 7 bars of soap and on the SAME day was able to leave feedback expressing how great the soap was for her daughter’s skin and exotic scent. Uhhhh, sure.

Cute stuff, but not a crafting supply. Etsy put them on the FP the other night. Pretty obviously does not fit the TOU.
Here is a wholesaler- http://www.bcmini.com/id1.html

There;’s a thread in the Closed thread blog where Indochine defends themselves.

I read that closed thread this morning, too. Indochine explains that particular sale was from their ex-spouse who still retains their name. LOL!

  4. Em January 13, 2010 at 12:05 pm #

He didn’t even address the issue of his “ex-wife,” who lives “in another country” receiving the soap and being able to try it out the very day that she bought it! Wish I could ship my items that quickly!

  5. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 12:06 pm #

It is possible though…a friend/family member purchases on Etsy(to avoid fee avoidance)and gives them feedback the same day. Maybe they’re helping them out because they’re a new show. I’ve seen people in the forums actually encouraging other new sellers to do just that.
Just because they sell from an Asian country doesn’t mean they’re automatically a reseller. That sounds kinda racist to me.

  6. crapgawker January 13, 2010 at 12:08 pm #

Oh please. Another arrogant Seller who believes all Etsians are stupid and it’s easy to pull the wool over their eyes. There are plenty bright enough to catch the shennanigans. Shilling? Really? And you thought we wouldn’t notice.

LOVE this site – it enables us to call out people like you Indochine.

Since you’re already selling 4,000 – 5,000 bars a month you don’t need Etsy so do us all a favor – don’t go away mad, just go away.

  7. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 12:11 pm #

I love this site…but..I like actual proof that someone IS a reseller.

  8. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 12:16 pm #

The posts that give you links that show that the seller aren’t handmade are the ones I pay attention to most

  9. Lu January 13, 2010 at 12:17 pm #

Indochine….not sure if is a reseller, but I know for sure i don’t like their attitude in the forums…last time I read their posts they were insulting other soapers that use melt and pour technique instead of making the base from scratch saying that melt and pour it’s not handmade….didn’t like the tone of it at all.

  10. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 12:17 pm #

    the seller isn’t* 😉

Amy, just finished reading that thread before I came here. Very clever way of calling someone out.

  14. forum rubbernecker January 13, 2010 at 1:01 pm #

this blog is for calling out. It isn’t limited to resellers. Shillers are also fair game.

  15. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 1:07 pm #

So, if you a friend buys something from you, and they give you feedback, that is shilling?

  16. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 1:08 pm #

If that is true, that should probly be in the Do’s and Don’t

  17. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 1:10 pm #

I don’t know for sure if it is true about the ex-wife buying, but if it is, according to you it must be a perfect stranger buying from you on Etsy, or else you’re shilling. That just makes no sense.

  18. Laura January 13, 2010 at 1:35 pm #

A lot of people use those miniatures as supplies!

  19. JajieBo January 13, 2010 at 1:46 pm #

That’s true, Laura, but per Etsy’s TOU:

“A commercial crafting supply is not a commercial item that, although it may be used in crafting, is ready to use as is (for example: mass-produced clothing, dollhouse furniture and clothing).”

  20. MadeByM**** January 13, 2010 at 1:53 pm #

Your relatives and friends can buy from you, but if you claim the buyer is an “another country”, how can they get their purchase the same exact day you buy it and give feedback? A “normal” buyer waits until they receive their items before leaving feedback. Also, people have more than one account and “buy from themselves” and leave feedback the same day…….

  21. MadeByM**** January 13, 2010 at 2:02 pm #

Maybe not a reseller, but too big for Etsy?

    http://indochinen.en.ec21.com/company_info.jsp

  22. Whattha? January 13, 2010 at 2:04 pm #

If it was his ex-wife, she might have been familiar with the products and just left the feedback

If I were going to shill, I would be a bit sneakier about it 😉

  29. sputnik January 13, 2010 at 5:10 pm #

The non-calling out forum posts are very funny. Sad that the shops they called out and the items are all still listed. Etsy members are getting more and more bold because they realize that flagging is useless and they are getting frustrated.
I mentioned before that I think it’s coming to a breaking point, I think the volume of calling out on the forums illustrates that clearly.
Of course the new message board could take things in a whole new direction, sort of a reset button.
All I know is Etsy is a smaller Ebay now, without the same buyer protection available via paypal.

“All I know is Etsy is a smaller Ebay now, without the same buyer protection available via paypal.”

Sums it up well, Sputnik. The volume of call-out threads should be sending a message to Etsy. Hope it is.

  40. Life During Wartime January 14, 2010 at 11:10 am #

I’m not sure what message Etsy is getting from the callout threads.

For every person complaining in the forum about resellers, there are dozens of reseller shops making sales. That’s money for Etsy. I would guess the message Etsy got is ‘we need some damage control and more control over the forums.’

The people who purchase from reseller shops are not just buyer accounts. People who have Etsy shops buy from resellers. Most of the Etsy community doesn’t care about reselling, and they’ll comment on all the Storque collections where resellers were featuted with the usual ‘great collection’ and ‘such cute picks’.

There seemed to be a brief improvement over the holidays with a little more care put into the collections Etsy curated. Or, maybe the reseller loving admins were on vacay?

Is this shop annoucement legit? This shop is bribing other shops to use them in treasuries! I would never buy from them, and if I were strictly a buyer, I would run away so fast.

It’s all so shady and tacky.

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/gildbookbinders

  43. uh-huh January 14, 2010 at 12:47 pm #

wow, i’ve read abouttreasury bribing and have suspected certain individuals of doing it (with no concrete proof) but actually putting it in the shop announcement …… wow. that’s l.a.m.e.

  44. JonhCocktoasten January 14, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

There is no limit to the douchebaggery and asshattery on etsy these days.

  45. Angel January 14, 2010 at 3:04 pm #

That book bindery has two “do not buy – reserved for free giveaway” listings (even has them put into a shop section).

    That is definitely not kosher.

  46. notvintage January 14, 2010 at 4:23 pm #

Reeks of desperation and a lack of integrity. It will attract the same. How can someone who actually MAKES THEIR OWN STUFF lower themselves to this level? Rhetorical question, I answered it with my first sentence.

  47. janicejoplin2 January 15, 2010 at 1:45 am #

If someone ever reads an announcement in my shop that gives something away for a treasury would you please Bitch Slap me on the spot!

  48. Crazy Cat Lady January 15, 2010 at 8:36 am #

I really want to buy one of those journals for $1 with no shipping and see if the seller will stick to the rules and sell it to me. Asshole.

“If someone ever reads an announcement in my shop that gives something away for a treasury would you please Bitch Slap me on the spot!”

The fact that you capitalized “Bitch Slap” just made me laugh way too hard. : ) That makes it sound so epic!

  50. notvintage January 16, 2010 at 3:18 pm #

that would be an epic Bitch Slap!

  51. Mike Thair January 17, 2010 at 6:12 am #

Yep, I’m the target of this vicious attack. Pity that Etsy posters can’t keep to the issues and then resort to “attacking the man.” If there are technical issues or differences of opinion, these are what should be discussed in forums. Attacking on personal issues just indicates to me a lot of insecurity among these posters.

I attempted to address all of the accusations in a post that was subsequently closed: http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6403130

I’m not sure that anything I could say would convince these attackers of our ligitimacy.

Yes, Whattha, this is exactly what happened…. my ex paid for soaps, received a response from Etsy, and hit the fedback button…. she is familiar with my soaps.

  52. ohmeohmy January 17, 2010 at 12:23 pm #

    mike thair,

i think you brought this “negativity” concerning your shop, upon yourself, unfortunately. You went into the forums and posted some “in your face” comments about soaps on etsy, as opposed to your soaps.

I think it would have been wiser to just introduce yourself and be gracious to your fellow soap sellers, instead of creating a competitive air. Sure everyone is another’s competitor, but it’s best to form a bond of some type with your fellow artisans.

Putting down how others make their products just made other soap sellers want to scrutinize your product.

  53. Mike Thair January 17, 2010 at 12:50 pm #

In my humble opinion there is a huge difference between scrutinizing a product ( I can handle product criticism, appears others can’t) and calling someone a liar, re-seller etc. etc.

  54. ohmeohmy January 18, 2010 at 5:23 pm #

    Mike Thair,

When I wrote “scrutinize” I meant that they looked over your shop with a magnifying glass.

But, like I said before, had you just posted in the forums, saying hello and making friends would have been the better way to go. Now your rep has taken a hit amoungst etsy sellers who read the forums, and are huge buyers of soap.

  55. Wendy January 20, 2010 at 6:50 am #

Thank you for the link to that wholesale place!!! I was in a bidding war on eBay a few years ago for some of that exact stuff.

The one major difference Etsy has over Ebay is that listings are way cheaper and you get to set your own price.

I’m new-ish to Etsy (have had a store for over a year but just started listing things in it a couple of weeks ago), and it’s a shame that resellers are using this as a way to sell products, but as all online money ventures seem to go, there are people who figure out how to game the system and eventually wreck it for the rest of us (mp3.com, anyone?)

  56. Mike Thair January 20, 2010 at 1:11 pm #

I hope this reference to resellers does not refer to Indochine Natural.

    WE ARE NOT RESELLERS!!!!

  57. Billy January 26, 2010 at 2:02 pm #

Today in a thread Indochine posted how she has people visit her etsy shop, then she has them go to her web site to buy.
    Lets see that is called?

  58. Mike Thair January 26, 2010 at 2:20 pm #

BTW I am a “He” last time I checked, and my partner is a “She”.

No sales on website (I never said that)…. they visited our premises personally to check them out…. make sure we weren’t resellers as suggested here. These are wholesalers, so obviously no interest in buying via Etsy.

Surely this s not outside of Etsy rules?

What is this called? …. good business and a life outside of Etsy.

    Hey…. maybe also called jealousy?

  61. SoSheSews January 29, 2010 at 11:07 am #

About Indochine… I know I’m really late on this one… but I just wanted to say that something *very similar* happened to me when my Mom bought from me. I begged her to buy through Etsy and she finally did right before Christmas. She didn’t understand the feedback system and she left feedback immediately. *bonks head*.

Just putting this out there because that may also be the case for some sellers with similar feedback situations.

    🙂

  62. Mike Thair January 29, 2010 at 12:29 pm #

Thanks SoSheSews. I didn’t exactly beg my ex-wife to buy, but she did what your Mum did. But of course this is of no consequence to these who called me out on this one. And of course they are not accountable, and I suffer the consequences.

  63. soapgirl February 9, 2010 at 8:42 pm #

mike, you had this coming. you’ve been an arrogant petulant shit-stirrer on a lot of forums and internet sites for years, and this is karma.

if you behaved better, people wouldn’t be so glad to find you breaking the rules and lying about it.

  64. Mike Thair February 9, 2010 at 9:28 pm #

Oh, very nice soapgirl….. is this the best you can do?

I am NOT beaking rules and lying…. never have and never will.

My Karma is good BTW. I hope yours is to.
