Links 3/26

Wanna buy a hookah?

Commercial supplies? Looks like finished stand alone items to me…
Just cuz you say it’s handmade, doesn’t make it so.

I found these easily on Pounce by looking at the thumbnail photos. Why can’t someone from Etsy look at Pounce as I did –maybe on their cupcake break — and find shops than need a staff review?

Two sellers with identical leg/arm warmers…wonder what that is all about…

Kenneth Jay Lane’s enamel elephant bracelet retails for $170. I highly doubt the handmade-ness and the Kenneth Jay Lane-ness of that bracelet. People. . .

  2. WTFISAPDF March 26, 2010 at 7:12 pm #

Now stop it!! Don’t you know we’re all home tonight making all sorts of goodies out of coin purses?

Shame on you for calling out a wonderful supply shop. If it wasn’t for this seller, we’d all be out getting drunk, having a good time and painting the town red.

Then we’d end up on Regretsy.

  3. WTFISAPDF March 26, 2010 at 7:24 pm #

Oh, and you know that Helen Killer would feature our red painted town in her “View it in a room” with a bunch of drunken sailors.

Do you not wear coin purse bracelets, necklaces and earrings? If not, you must be a fashion train wreck.

And, FYI, we’re buying the hookah for Etsy coin purse crafting nights so don’t cha go scooping it up on us, ya hear. Cuz if you do, I know an Etsy seller who can write you a letter telling you to stuff it before you even realize you were stuffed.

  4. Life During Wartime March 26, 2010 at 8:18 pm #

WTFISAPDF, so funny. I think the coin purses are for linking together to make a fashionable bib neck piece. And then tag it woodland, rustic, vegan.

WJW about the KJL bracelet. So Etsy is working towards becoming ‘your global marketplace for fake name brand fashions, jewelry and accessories’. I guess the SCRAM scam bot doesn’t look for designer names in listing titles. Ooops!

  5. LadyJane March 26, 2010 at 11:16 pm #

Those are NOT Swarovski crystals-you can look at them and tell. Also the rest of the shop is questionable.

  6. MadeByM**** March 27, 2010 at 6:23 am #

All I can do is shake my head anymore……….what a waste Etsy has become. : (

  7. JohnCocktoasten March 27, 2010 at 6:59 am #

    No way, Jose.

  8. Dee March 27, 2010 at 6:30 pm #

This whole shop reeks of reselling. The beads are ok, but the rest?

  9. Life During Wartime March 27, 2010 at 6:51 pm #

Yup, Cinderellaroom looks like another reseller — not a problem if you sell supplies. The ribbon and beads are fine, and are listed as supplies. But the glass pendants are listed as (handmade) Glass, when they are mass produced lampwork so belong in Supplies. I doubt very much that the person who set up the store and fills the orders also makes the earrings. The baby shoes…well, that’s really the give away. At least the seller isn’t prentending to handmade everything in the shop with love and sleepless nights.

I’ll add this shop to my reseller file.

  10. Elle March 27, 2010 at 7:36 pm #

reseller with claims of “handmade! by me!” which will, of course, fool etsy into allowing this shop to stay.

Handmade beaded evening purse for $25, anyone?

  11. Life During Wartime March 27, 2010 at 8:24 pm #

Good one, Elle. The announcement says clearly that she runs a small factory, as opposed to making the purses by hand herself. And some of the ‘beaded’ purses actually are embellished with SEQUINS, not beads. Not the same thing, as anyone who does beadwork will tell them. I’m pretty sure you can find an embellished evening purse from China in any mall on sale for less than $25 + $20 shipping = $45!

Another shop for the list. I check all these links every day to see if Etsy is doing anything about obvious resellers. I would have to say they aren’t doing anything that I can see.

  12. Life During Wartime March 28, 2010 at 12:49 am #

Etsy is rockin’ the faux vintage this morning on the FP!

Here’s the collection on Craft Cult:

When I saw the page, it included this pair of lips sunglasses, widely available all over the web brand new for under $10

So, it’s pretty much official now: anything can be sold as vintage on Etsy per the staff picks here. Thanks for the clarification, folks.

  13. Amused March 28, 2010 at 10:58 am #

Who put vintage 90’s on the front page?

  14. JohnCocktoasten March 28, 2010 at 11:12 am #

    CDs anyone?

  15. me March 28, 2010 at 11:55 am #

i do have to vouch for the arm/leg warmers. they’re socks bought at target made into arm/leg warmers. i used to sell baby leg warmers in my shoppe made from socks. i don’t anymore.. but, just sayin’.

  16. me March 28, 2010 at 11:56 am #

and i’ve seen those exact socks at target, which is why i know that’s where they’re from. lol…

  17. Life During Wartime March 28, 2010 at 12:47 pm #

I’ve seen 3 vintage 90s items (one was actually brand new, and currently available for sale at half the Etsy price) so far today on the FP. An earlier comment of mine above with links is still waiting for moderation.

I guess the ‘is 90s vintage’ issue is resolved now, and vintage on Etsy is pretty much like vintage on Ruby Lane — owned for one year + no longer in production rule…except it seems that items still being made and sold new right now are okay, too, if you say you think it’s vintage.

    SCRAM = scam.

It didn’t take Etsy long to sell their handmade movement/indie/vintage cred for 20 cents a listing. I think the staff needs official Etsy logo kneepads. “I want to share my beautiful handmade with love kneepads with you. Will make you happy to swallow.”

  18. Thud March 28, 2010 at 1:50 pm #

Caught an item on the time machine.
2 years, one sale, no feedback, check and MOonly.
    Plastic canvas copyright ripoffs.

  19. detroit March 28, 2010 at 5:02 pm #

LDW- – NO JOKE! I think the novelty Esty kneepads would be a great idea. There are lots of disgruntled Etsiers who would find them hilarious – at least. Would get a shop a lot of attention.

If Etsy got wind – they could take them down for TM infringement. But, if you figured out a way to riff on / parody the logo (like Regretsy), it would be fair use.

Or, remember Lindsay Lohan’s line of leggings? No? Well, one pair came with built-in kneepads. Classy, no?

Etsy leggings with built in kneepads – lol. Gargle on resellers – Etsy! You’ve sold yourself out!

    JohnCocktoasten Says:

    CDs anyone?

Anyone wanna bet on whether they’re burned copies of the real thing?

  21. Sara March 28, 2010 at 7:38 pm #

Unrelated, but does anyone know the source of those snow white decals for laptops? I see a ton of them everywhere, from lots of shops, and am wondering how they are handmade by each of them individually and yet look exactly the same.

  22. itstinks March 29, 2010 at 4:34 am #

Suz, I’m guessing burned copies and probably not of the originals either. Probably copies from some music site like Imeem and then they just found the dust jackets and copied/printed them.

That would all be really easy to do.

  23. itstinks March 29, 2010 at 4:37 am #

Thud, the check and MO thing is probably why that shop doesn’t have many sales. The buyers would by that Disney stuff just like they buy all the other Disney stuff on etsy.

The seller just needs better pictures and a Paypal account.

I’m not excusing using copyrighted names or anything but at least that stuff does look handmade.

  24. wahwah March 29, 2010 at 5:19 am #

Love the kneepads idea and would buy some myself.

Day by day, etsy is surely turning into ebay.

Oh, but the music is 20+ years…………that must mean it’s vintage!

    (in my smart a$$ voice)

  26. vicki March 29, 2010 at 3:54 pm #

I reported the CD shop, NEW cd’s of vintage music come on this looks like Ebay shit to me. I am so sick of sellers like these. I feel better now.

  27. Nobody Understands My Pain Either March 29, 2010 at 10:56 pm #

    Look familiar?

  28. ohmeohmy March 30, 2010 at 12:35 am #

    Nobody understands my pain either,

    Who is this shop?

  29. Life During Wartime March 30, 2010 at 1:29 am #

Wow, Undesigns was featured seller without having a completed Profile page or Policies page in her shop? I find it hard to believe that she can’t find a student fluent in written English to type it in for her for the equivalent of a few bucks.

What’s the story with this shop, Nobody Understands?

  30. luckyshots March 30, 2010 at 4:15 am #

Update on called-out sellers now on page 2 of this blog: (I’ll do more as I have time . . . )

Seller Zhous03– Shop is empty but is still open.

Seller MySpecialtiques – Shop is empty but is still open.

Seller MarleneTreasures – Shop is empty but still open.

Seller 3boygrandma – No change. The egg basket from JoAnn’s is still there
As are the puff bunny rabbits
along with a bunch of other non-vintage, resell crapola.

Seller TheColorfulWorld still has the Paper Pizzaz crap for sale.

Bella’s Beauty and More is gone . . . for now, until she resurrects herself with yet another nutso persona.

Seller ChenBeads – No change, all the mass-produced crap is still there.

Seller SallyMBeads – This seller has changed the tags on the “Pandora” beads to supplies, commercial, so that’s good. However, there is a bunch of non-handmade (may I add, TACKY!) jewelry in her shop that comes straight from China. Such as: – a finished bracelet tagged as commercial supplies.

Seller CloudyWind – looks like this seller has TAGGED their “Pandora” beads as commercial supplies but in the description still calls them “handmade by me.”

Seller TrendsofIndia – Shop is empty but is still open.

Seller Smilingstar – No change; all the resell crap is still there.

Seller Sparkletrue – looks like this shop has removed its obvious resell items. All that’s left are charms on chains, which is perfectly Etsy legal.

  31. itstinks March 30, 2010 at 5:47 am #

wow! Look at the prices in that “featured” shop (undesigns). They are from Bangkok. I can’t even buy the supplies used to make those for that price – even from Bangkok.

But, gee, I’m sure there not mass produced. (sarcasm)

  32. Nobody Understands My Pain Either March 30, 2010 at 7:19 am #

undesigns is the same merchandise as Fonth and Thaisterlingsilver (HUGE resellers, 3000+ sales who finally got shut down on Etsy, after really strong evidence was repeatedly included in flags. If anyone is worried about the plight of these poor resllers, you can rest easy – they immediately set up shop on Artfire where it appears that they’re doing just fine:

It’s also the same as: (also, check out luckilydesign’s “friend”

Flag away…but don’t get your hopes up. And remember – as long as it’s not bank robbery or murder, it’s fine.

  33. JohnCocktoasten March 30, 2010 at 8:49 am #

Yes, it looks familiar. I cannot fucking believe they were featured seller. OMFG.

  34. WTFISAPDF March 30, 2010 at 2:39 pm #

I’m confused. Where was undesigns featured? On the front page?

  35. lala March 30, 2010 at 4:17 pm #

WTFISAPDF- according to Craft Cult Undesigns has never been on the front page. I don’t remember them ever being a Featured Seller either. Does anyone have a link to their Featured Seller interview?

  36. Sarah March 30, 2010 at 6:12 pm #

Undesigns looks like exactly the same type of stuff as heartdesignjewelry and infinityjewelryclub, both shops also based out of Bangkok. And some of Undesigns’ items have the name “thaisterlingsilver” across their pictures.

  37. Sarah March 30, 2010 at 6:18 pm #

And they have different photos of the same item. This is always easier when they just use the same manufacturer’s photo.

  38. Nobody Understands My Pain Either March 30, 2010 at 6:35 pm #

My comment with links regarding all of the other sellers that have identical merchandise to undesigns is being moderated but yes…undesigns is thaisterlingsilver, fonth, redteddy, infinityjewelryclub, heartdesigns and who knows who else. I can’t find any evidence of them ever being a featured seller either. Surely they couldn’t be lying? (*gasp*)

  39. Kiss My Ass March 30, 2010 at 8:09 pm #

its is funny how you idiots say what a waste Etsy has become with resellers, but you still stay on there and sell your shit!

  40. AF March 31, 2010 at 5:42 am #

Yeah, Undesigns was never an Etsy Featured Seller. I looked at the archive of featured sellers and that shop was nowhere to be seen. They’ve only been on Etsy since 9/09 anyway, so I didn’t have to look back very far to verify!

  41. Life During Wartime March 31, 2010 at 10:17 am #

KMA, I don’t sell on Etsy. Never have.
