There are HUNDREDS of pictures with Alibaba & Taobao watermarks, among others. If you search for glass pendants, they take up most of the first page of search results.

And this is the strangest thing:
There was a call-out thread about them in the Etsy forums yesterday asking Etsy how someone with Alibaba watermarks could continue to stay open after flagging & why we should even bother reporting if they were not going to get removed…
Thread got closed. Removed from the forum search completely and member account DELETED.

Why is Etsy being so oddly suspicious about this shop?!

Again, a “power seller”! They leave their money-makers alone.

Will have to keep an eye on the Closed Threads blog for the call-out thread.

I saw that thread. Tried to find the thread as well as OP’s member ID later, but yes, they were both deleted. It’s not strange, in fact, that’s the pathetic part of it all, it’s pretty much another day at Etsy HQ.
Etsy says ‘don’t break the rules by calling-out’ yet they break their own rules by allowing resellers to stay. Hypocrites….nothing more than hypocrites.

Once a thread is closed by Admin it is no longer “searchable” on Etsy – but the thread is still out there:

I, too, saw that thread as it was happening. It is unusual for Etsy to delete a thread rather than simply closing it.

I am guessing that this shop is part of the ‘new’ expanding Etsy. It looks like a shop for glass beads made by hand in a factory setting. I thought the point of Etsy was that glass bead artisans wouldn’t have to compete on the site with shops set up by factories?

The categories and tags are full of violations. A bead for Pandora is not a ‘pendant’. Selling a buyer’s choice assortment of 5 sterling chains premade to a selection of sizes is not handmade jewelry. It’s a supply.

How awful for the many talented glass bead artists on Etsy that this factory made wholesaler gets the green light to sell as Handmade.

I went to that shop because I thought maybe they were selling this stuff as supplies, but no. I give up. Etsy is a free for all.

  6. AAH April 15, 2010 at 11:36 am #

I wanted to also say that I don’t know if this particular seller is a reseller, they might be and they might not be. But what was upsetting in the whole matter is Etsy’s perpetual double speak – say one thing, but do another. And to delete the OP’s account for it?!
Etsy says they are trying to get a hold on the reseller mess, but they must take most of us for fools, if they think it’s not so obvious that they allow certain resellers to remain under the guise that the seller has been on Etsy long enough to be ‘established’ so they must be okay. Yes, established resellers is what they are, and Etsy admin are hypocrites.

I’m just so fed up with Etsy Admin and Etsy in general, that I opened my own website, and removed all my Etsy shop info yesterday. I will still buy handmade and support my fellow artisans, but I wont sell there anymore.

It cracks me up that Etsy Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff OhFaro and Laurie Ryan, had to jump right in to scold the OP.

I think they both sit with their Dick Tracy watches on their wrists and send secret codes to Michelle.

    flagged again.

Is there a way to ask what is actually being done about resellers without calling out or getting deleted?

I want -real- answers not just “look at this thread, where we dance around the issues”

  9. Life During Wartime April 15, 2010 at 1:07 pm #

If this shop is a small factory that mass produces art glass beads, then they are still reselling because they sell finished chains in wholesale lots.

If this shop is a larger factory that makes a variety of jewelry and related supplies — including beads and chains — then they are not a ‘reseller’.

Etsy seems to have new rules about allowing factory shops, but the standards for being allowed to have a shop have not be publicly disclosed…that I am aware of.

The shop has a bunch of tag violations, and possibly category violations as well. I doubt Etsy will do anything about this because the rules for what is handmade — or maybe where and how handmade is created — have changed, and who can tell which shop is breaking unstated rules?

Something stinks, and it’s more than just this shop. The individual artisan or small collective is getting the shaft.

  10. JajieBo April 15, 2010 at 2:10 pm #

Seriously, this shit is nothing new- what exactly are we waiting for? Etsy isn’t going to fix anything, ever. They’ll keep feeding us stories about changing, make a few minor cosmetic changes, and pat themselves on the back while the money rolls in.
Meanwhile, we’re the “jealous bitches” from “that other site” who use our free time to do Etsy’s job for them- with nothing of real significance to show for any of it.

I really don’t mean to sound so bitter, but I just hate knowing that what we’re fighting for doesn’t matter in the long run. It’s frustrating, and pisses me off to no end.

Keep up the good work, peeps- I just don’t have it in me anymore. Etsy doesn’t deserve my time.

  11. Life During Wartime April 15, 2010 at 2:42 pm #

I think the time for Etsy to prevent this situation from developing was back in March 07 when there was a plan to eliminate vintage and strictly limit supplies. If that had happened, and the rule had remained ‘handmade by individuals or small collectives’ only, Etsy today would have decent marketplace integrity (to borrow their phrase).

Not because I don’t buy and sell vintage, or buy and use supplies. But because the site would have had a tighter focus and been a hella lot easier to supervise.

Does anyone remember ancient history, like back in 2006 maybe, Etsy staff recruiting to bring vintage to the site? Apparently they weren’t looking for funky stuff like mod clothing and decor, but collectibles like Depression Glass which even today are not well represented on Etsy. And they recruited from online antiques malls. I guess because they could see sellers’ home address. Anyone know the details?

The junk fits the clientele and the ignorance of the “content” team.

  13. Cat Power April 15, 2010 at 3:29 pm #

“Pissed Off” is a very mild term for the way I feel about this whole ridiculous situation.

It’s a lot like being down wind of a farmer spreading manure on his hay field. The stink cannot be avoided, unless you move.

I really think that if we want to keep our sanity and our reputations intact, that we are just going to have to move away from the smell….as it’s only going to get more ripe when the sun comes out!

I reported this shop a while ago. One of the things that made me mad was that some of the beads in the photos had “Pandora” right on the silver, so they are reselling because Pandora is a brand, I think (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). It just makes me sad and mad because of all the legitimate sellers of craft, supplies or vintage have a hard enough time getting noticed without all these resellers junking up the mess. Just like what everyone else says…

  16. jcjohn April 15, 2010 at 6:30 pm #

I don’t know if I followed this correctly….the OP’s account was deleted? Or the resellers account was deleted? Who was the OP, anyway?

    Thanks

  17. girly April 15, 2010 at 7:18 pm #

I don’t understand why, if Etsy obviously WANTS this kind of business to thrive, that they don’t just create a reseller category and be done with it already. Instead, they play these games acting as if they’ll correct the situation when they won’t, and in the process invite lies and deceit; undercutting the legit sellers in the handmade category. That’s what’s most frustrating to me – is that 1) there are A LOT of people out there will to flat-out lie and hurt others in the process and 2) Etsy is a-okay with helping it to continue. I’m not sure how they sleep at night.

  18. etsycallout April 15, 2010 at 8:31 pm #

The OP that asked Etsy about the reseller.

  19. Elle April 16, 2010 at 3:33 am #

Taking a break from the reseller hunt to share a laugh. Everdayfairytale is also an everyday shiller, it seems.

Care to guess who laglamourous is moonlighting as? Purchased a full page of items on 4/11, left feedback on 4/11… immediately after EF got 2 negatives. Hmm. Coincidentally, EF didn’t leave feedback for laglamourous. But why would she?

Funny too that a lot of her positive feedback reads more like neutral, or negative.

  20. wahwah April 16, 2010 at 5:27 am #

Etsy Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff OhFaro and Laurie Ryan both have very sandy vaginas.

  21. I think April 16, 2010 at 5:38 am #

That stuff is allowed as long as they tag it commercial supplies, right?

They are tagging as jewelry which is not allowed, but I do think it’s fine as supplies.

  22. I think April 16, 2010 at 5:40 am #

And the person who posted the etsy thread is a sock puppet and that is not allowed so that is why that account was deleted.

I noticed that, too. Gee, I wonder whose rule-breaking makes the site look worse.

    OMG A CALLER-OUTTER! BURN HER!!

  24. Etsy Person April 16, 2010 at 5:44 am #

Feedback is not all that great – even the positives are wrong orders in some cases. The amount of fb given compared to the amount sold is another story.

  25. MadeByM**** April 16, 2010 at 6:57 am #

JajieBo……..I feel the same as you do…..Etsy doesn’t care and they’re going to do what they want to do in the end. It would shut everyone up if they would just reformat their venue and include a reseller and/or factory made section as suggested above. Allowing resellers to stay without reformatting the venue makes it look like deception on the part of the resellers AND Etsy!

  26. somebody else, not me April 16, 2010 at 8:13 am #

what bugs me most about this pandora thing is that they lie from the beginning about these being murano beads. they are made in china, NOT murano, italy, and will never be murano beads. the chinese ripped off the process, okay, but they shouldn’t be able to rip off the name/location. i sold venetian beads before the czechs started duplicating them, now the chinese….ay carumba.

I didn’t see a forum thread – it’s on the front page of etsy.

Whoops, I posted this in the wrong thread here – the most recent posting has the featured seller discussion… sorry!

I had flagged this one a while back so I just went back to check. Shop is not gone but all the items are. How long before they are back up, I wonder?
