OrionsTreasures

Reader Email:

i initially found it while looking for some prints
lo and behold, it’s selling bali silver chimes as handmade
handmade by my people that is ( i live in indonesia)
maybe it’s mistagged supplies
but maybe not as the shop announcement practically giving it away that they are not the artists selling their work, rather, a reseller
i don’t think it’s robert kline selling his work there

http://www.etsy.com/shop/OrionsTreasures

Shop Announcement:
Mermaids by Robert Kline and unique, handcrafted jewelry from around the world!

Gorgeous Sea Maiden art prints from a collection of Mermaids, Mermen, Sea babies and pirates created by renowned author and artist Robert Kline of St. Augustine, Florida. The prints are lithograph reproductions of original pencil and watercolor paintings.

I have looked around the world to find and bring to you – very unique, handcrafted, high quality, collectible jewelry. I think that you will agree that the items I have for sale have been made by true artisans with extreme pride and craftsmanship.
______________________________________________________________________________
Trying to find the original artist’s website. “Robert Kline Art” is the same sellers on Etsy. I found a gallery page for Robert Kline and all his work is sold without the RobertKlineArt watermark. http://www.capelightfineart.com/store/products/2,26-robert-kline/page/1/ I will honestly say it’s hard to figure out what is really from him since everything is so wrapped up with this place. Odd.

Never heard of him. What’s his deal?

  4. JK April 16, 2010 at 9:49 am #

D’ohman is the featured? What’s the topic — stealing other people’s ideas and getting away with it?

  5. etsycallout April 16, 2010 at 10:01 am #

Heaven help us. Etsy has completely jumped the shark.

    Oh fer chrissakes Etsy!

  7. ugh April 16, 2010 at 10:29 am #

    Thanks; off to read.

  9. luckyshots April 16, 2010 at 11:18 am #

I saw that on the front page and just about screamed . . . then I remembered that I’m at work so that’s probably not a good idea.

    Way to go, Etsy.

You know, every day I force myself to stay on Etsy. I am not really happy there any more. I am not happy buying, I am not happy talking, I am not happy blogging, and about the only thing about it that makes me happy at all is that I like some of the people there. Every day this feeling is getting worse. I literally force my hand to not write and have my Etsy account deleted several times a week. I am just so sick of it it, of everything, the forum, admin, the same threads, the same discussions, the same assholes, the resellers, all of it. I just spent 3 weeks mostly with my husband and going out and doing stuff with him and I was actually happy doing this stuff for a change. I am not sure why I stay around really. The only reason I can think of is that my staying annoys more people than my leaving would. That’s it. Ok I do admit I like buying stuff too but even that has become so treacherous it is hardly worth it anymore.

  15. ArtTales April 16, 2010 at 7:35 pm #

This is insane! I try my hardest to believe that Etsy means well and that they are working with the help that they have. But the more I see the more it just makes me sad. Sad for all the true hardworking artists that suffer and become overlooked due to problems like these.

I’m not sure what the true answer is to stopping this, but a few things can help. 1)Hire more people.. and I don’t mean 10 more, I’m talking 100. 2)Hire people that know the difference between something looking vintage and actually being vintage. 3)Make Etsy about the community not about the money. If you care about the artists they will care about you.

I wasn’t around on Etsy when Rob was CEO before but I had hopes that he returned to whip the site into shape. It’s a little different to find a reseller or mis-tagger while searching for something else, but to have it featured on the FP is just crap.

Sometimes I wonder if allowing my creations to be on Etsy is really the reputation I want to have…

No one bumped the thread, yet LisaJune closed it. That has to be a record for pre-emptive thread closure!!! She must be reading this site.

  17. Amused April 17, 2010 at 12:42 am #

Kinda makes you think, doesn’t it? Close a thread before it goes anywhere else yet ignore blatent reseller call-outs. Very telling.

  18. ohmeohmy April 17, 2010 at 1:19 am #

Closing it today April 16th means that lisajune read this very page on this very blog

  19. Laura April 17, 2010 at 1:45 am #

    WOW! Closed, before a bump?

This guys shop is a mess:

    ———————————————-

Or at least grow up. Pathetic. A stealth close of an old thread so as not to taint the integrity of Etsy.

Let me get this right. An Etsy Callout reader could locate the thread but Etsy couldn’t before they featured this seller.

Don’t they vet these featured sellers? Oh wait, tht would require them to use their own search engine to puruse the forums.

  28. wahwah April 17, 2010 at 7:36 am #

And how about putting something on the FP that has some fucking color???? It’s like the same shit over and over. I’m going to start making colorless shit so I can get on there.

WAHWAH, HAHAHaHA – exactly what I’ve been thinking. What’s with all the beige? Is beige even a color????

    I HATE beige.

There are soo many colors in a crayola box. Please use one of them. (beige isn’t even IN a crayola box.)

Has this seller ever been called out here?

  33. wahwah April 17, 2010 at 10:22 am #

I see they have a bit of blue up now, but no color is allowed in the backgrounds. Brooklyn must not allow people to paint their walls any colors other than white.

  34. Life During Wartime April 17, 2010 at 10:41 am #

Ha! The color choices for the front page remind me of the way homes are decorated in the area where I live. Everything comes in color choices of blue or brown (which includes beige), and all the walls are white.

    I find it depressing.

  37. detroit April 17, 2010 at 1:19 pm #

Wow – that pre-emptive thread closing was (twilight zone) “Doo doo, doo doo!”

Maybe they didn’t close it from reading this blog, but they could all the sudden see an old thread getting a lot of traffic, and trace it back here?

    Either way – odd….

They are closing threads that some people on a small site in vast cyberspace are joking about POSSIBLY reviving in a spirit which MAY involve ‘calling out’…

More music, Styx: “Too-oo-ooh much, time on ‘their’ hands…”

Maybe Etsy should take some staff from the overeager forum SS, and redeploy the ruthless, dogged hunters of all hints of ‘calling out’, ON THE FUCKING RESELLERS!!!

C’mon Etsy – which is worse here, chatter on your forum? Or DEFRAUDING YOUR CUSTOMERS??!?

  38. detroit April 17, 2010 at 1:27 pm #

And – WHOA – that Fashionshoww shop mentioned above:

Cheap leather bracelet reseller from China:
    http://www.etsy.com/shop/martin1206

  44. Thud April 17, 2010 at 6:09 pm #

This seller has been flagged endlessly.
    looks pretty and natural, yes?
It ais also all from craftparts.com and the finished pieces purchased are being sold as handmade.

    For example:
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/44036474/bucket-of-apples-natural-wooden-play-toy

    Bucket: http://www.craftparts.com/11316-craft-wooden-bucket-wire-handle-p-2177.html
    Colored apples: http://www.craftparts.com/burgundy-apples-cherries-p-1539.html

6 eggs for $9 as handmade:
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/43399134/sale—6-farm-fresh-wooden-eggs-extra-la

    $0.45 each at any supplier

Same price ~ $0.45 for an egg cup here:
    http://www.craftparts.com/egg-cups-for-hen-egg-p-1521.html

Or you can buy 4 ‘handmade’ for $9.95
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/41357601/wooden-egg-cup-set-for-a-childs-play-kit

    Shall I go on?
This person has over 600 sales buying wooden blanks and selling them as is and calling it handmade.

  45. WTFISAPDF April 18, 2010 at 6:35 am #

check out this reseller on the front page right now

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/panthermatic

These are NOT vintage. These are from TARGET.

  46. wahwah April 18, 2010 at 6:52 am #

Sure, but the background is white so it doesn’t matter.

  47. wahwah April 18, 2010 at 7:04 am #

Did you guys see the camel toes on the FP? LMAO Etsy has reached a new low.

  48. Life During Wartime April 18, 2010 at 10:54 am #

WTFISAPDF, maybe available at Target. I think this seller may get their glasses from the same supplier. And maybe works where glasses are made and sold, and is unloading dead stock to make room for this season’s current sunglasses.

I couldn’t find any mention in the listings, but vintage sunglasses were GLASSes — the lenses were glass. And so the lenses tended to be much smaller due to the weight. Those frames are way too heavy and elaborate for the 50s. Sunday on Etsy is usually Vintage FAIL Day.

Wahwah, I am going to look for that cameltoe!

  49. WTFISAPDF April 18, 2010 at 11:16 am #

Yes, and colored tinting sure hasn’t been around since the 1950s.

Oh, how do I join the R.E.S.E.L.L team Etsy?

  50. wahwah April 18, 2010 at 12:26 pm #

    Camel toe front and center.

  51. detroit April 18, 2010 at 1:18 pm #

EEWWWW! Um, thanks for linking to the camel toe. I had to see it in the same way people stop to gawk at car crashes.

WHO WANTS TO BUY THOSE NOW? Can I be assured I’m getting a different pair than the ones that were all us in the model’s fallopian tubes. Jeez!!

Soooo, gross. Do men (or women who swing that way too, I guess) find that attractive? To me it’s as nasty as when men have ‘moose knuckle’. T…M…I…

Although, it seems to get attention on etsy. Note to self if I ever set up shop there – ‘somehow work in cleavage, butts, or crotch shots – even if it’s totally not relevant to the product.’

(Well, just asked hubby if camel toe is hot, or not. He said – it depends on if the girl is hot. If so, then yes. Men!!)

  52. detroit April 18, 2010 at 1:20 pm #

*all UP in the model’s fallopian tubes*

    lol

Since Etsy is aimed mainly at women – does exploiting female sexuality work on them? It must. Like, they see a sexy chick with camel toe, and want to be her, and think that buying the same pants will help??

Marketing. It’s like sausage. It’s pretty disgusting to see what goes into it. The exploitation of people’s insecurities, and basest instincts…

  53. somebody else, not me April 18, 2010 at 1:23 pm #

shout out to those of us still selling our own handmade pieces on etsy!

  54. detroit April 18, 2010 at 1:23 pm #

Oh – not that I’m being prudish, or saying women’s bodies are gross. Quite the contrary. It’s just, when it comes to selling something…well, c’mon, We all know what’s going on here.

  55. wahwah April 18, 2010 at 1:59 pm #

Sexy to men or not, I do NOT want my hoo-ha showcased on the FP, LOL.

Well, maybe I do. I’ll have to drape what I make over my crotch and photograph it on a white background.

  56. itstinks April 18, 2010 at 2:12 pm #

Don’t worry, if you’re not an etsy admin fav, you won’t get your ho-ha or anything else on the FP.

And to somebody else, not me – I make and sell my own handmade pieces on etsy – YAY for going against the grain!!!!

I’m a rebel and I’ll never ever be any good! lol

  57. Life During Wartime April 18, 2010 at 2:33 pm #

About the cameltoe, all I can say is OUCH!

Looking at the listing, I guess the seller is another one of the women of Etsy who seems so distressed by body issues that she cannot list measurements for her garment? Seeing the way those shorts fit, I’d sure want to know measurements before buying them!

  58. WTFISAPDF April 18, 2010 at 2:47 pm #

I wanna wear camel toe pants with my cool 1950s vintage shades.

  59. wahwah April 18, 2010 at 4:29 pm #

WTFISAPDF, when I go to Target tomorrow I’ll pick you up some vintage shades.

I saw the thread that referred to the closing of the old copier thread, read the old thread that lisajune closed, and could not figure out what the hell was going on. Am perfectly happy to have figured it out (thank you ECO) but am now pissed about the censorship. I mean, seriously?

  61. Indeed April 18, 2010 at 5:02 pm #

I saw that thread too. I also saw that they closed it for referring to a closed thread. Wonder if they would close a third thread that asked about the the thread referring to the closed thread being closed.

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/44817964/moss-stone-set
Just featured on the FP. You can buy this set for $1 at Dollar Tree.

  63. Brian April 18, 2010 at 8:40 pm #

Uh-huh, I was just going to post this! Yes, I just bought this set of faux moss rocks at Dollar Tree last week so I was shocked to see it on the front page.

  64. Brian April 18, 2010 at 8:44 pm #

Oh, and in addition to the Dollar Tree moss rocks in theroomnexttoyours’ shop (which are on the front page), they are also selling the Zen sand and rock garden that I bought at Dollar Tree last week as well. It came with the Buddha head that they are ALSO selling separately.

  65. WTFISAPDF April 19, 2010 at 4:15 am #

You can find the Buddah head at China Wholesale. I didn’t copy the link because it’s an unverified site and don’t want to be spreading viruses.

Is Michelle still working on it?…seems like she isn’t

Thread stays open until people disagree, then it’s shut.

    Well played Etsy.

  70. somebody else, not me April 19, 2010 at 10:38 am #

“we can’t discuss specific cases of potential breaking of Etsy’s rules in the forums. ” there doesn’t seem to be much that can be discussed in the forums. honestly, i have never seen such a thin skinned bunch! they should rename the critiques section ‘praise and homage only.’

i have mentioned a few times on threads how we are treated as children.

  71. Life During Wartime April 19, 2010 at 10:43 am #

As long as the Etsy staff continues to put reseller junk in their FP collections, it appears to the public (including me) that no one working for Etsy can tell the difference.

The spring crop of camel toes is hilarious! Reminds me of something I read (dunno if it’s true) about starlets in the 50s peeing themselves just a little so that wet spot would get them some kind of attention. Etsy has class, real class (said in my best Barbara Nichols voice).

  72. detroit April 19, 2010 at 12:06 pm #

Again….EEEEEWWWW! And that bathing suit is tagged ‘vintage’, meaning, I assume that you’ll be getting the very one that was nestled snugly in her vagoo.

It’s like talking about a rash, you start to itch. I see those uncomfortable looking camel toes, makes me want to tug at my undies.

  73. Life During Wartime April 19, 2010 at 1:33 pm #

ATTN ETSY SELLERS: don’t forget to add the tag ‘cameltoe’ to your listings if applicable so you can be picked for treasuries!

  74. Em April 19, 2010 at 1:49 pm #

    70-
I was thinking that same thing. I’d be really hesitant to model vintage clothing that has contact with anything down here. Even more hesitant to buy it.

  75. JajieBo April 19, 2010 at 3:45 pm #

This entire post has had me in stitches. From Etsy blatantly featuring a crook (and then tripping over their own dicks to cover their tracks) to the cameltoes… man. Funny stuff. I’ve finally made peace with the fact that Etsy is a joke, and not a reputable marketplace. And I’m okay with that. I need a laugh sometimes, and if Etsy will be my laugh-supplier- hey, fine. Why not?

  76. Elle April 19, 2010 at 7:31 pm #

As seen in http://www.etsy.com/shop/theroomnexttoyours aka theDollarStorenexttoyou ‘s shop announcement:

“we make our items with care:

*concrete Buddhas are hand mixed concrete to ensure a smooth mixture, then hand painted, tinted and textured

*moss stones are hand carved foam with mutli green shades of flocking applied to ensure all the surface is covered (not like the cheap manufactured ones)

*zen gardens are made from wood scrap, hand cut and painted, found rocks and clean white sand (the zen rake is the only pc we don’t make)”

    Unbelievably bold.
    .

  77. Life During Wartime April 19, 2010 at 7:40 pm #

Elle, she must make great items since they look just like the manufactured ones sold at Dollar Tree. Sheesh, it’s a wonder she can sit down to type considering the size of the virtual stones in her pants.

  78. Thud April 20, 2010 at 3:45 am #

#45 was just approved, please read šŸ™‚

  79. wahwah April 20, 2010 at 5:37 am #

The same pink suitcase was in two consecutive FP’s this morning. I don’t know why I even look at the FP it just gets me angry.

  80. itstinks April 20, 2010 at 5:40 am #

#79 – that etsy shop with the wooden apples and eggs, etc would be perfectly etsy legal if everything was tagged as Supplies instead of in the handmade category.

Although she’s not selling them as supplies but as finished products. I’m sure etsy could coach her on how to reword her stuff.

  81. Thud April 20, 2010 at 6:04 pm #

Yes, but if she sold as supplies she couldn’t charge $5 for a $0.35 wooden egg.

  82. Em April 21, 2010 at 5:15 am #

I go back to this a lot – supplies can’t be something that’s already usable. She’s selling them as toys, so technically it’s usable without altering it. I really hope buying a wooden bucket and some carved apples and sticking them together in one listing doesn’t count as “hand-assembled.”

  83. uh-huh April 28, 2010 at 5:44 am #
