Sur Sandalet/LilaSandals !?

http://www.etsy.com/shop/LilaSandals
http://www.etsy.com/listing/44229080/handmade-leather-sandals-8102 featured on the FP at least twice

Well, they are handmade, but they are not theirs! They are handmade by the Turkish workshop: Sur Sandalet
http://sursandalet.com/
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=73272115408

turkish bodrum sandals was found in this shopping guide:
http://www.guidebodrum.com/shopping%20in%20Bodrum.htm

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_1&listing_id=42970944

That Turkish seller is well-known, and even has their own facebook account to advertise their sandals. But even the Facebook account is in their real name Sursandalet, not the Etsy name LilaSandals — and even on the Facebook account there’s no reference to an Etsy shop.

If Surdsandalet wanted to sell on Etsy, I think they actually could, since they are a small workshop, and all are involved in the manufacture (or it so appears).

But it’s such a rip-off for LilaSandals to claim they handmake them! They even use the sursandalet inventory numbers, and some of their pictures, although LilaSandals takes some of their own pictures.

Maybe I missed this and you can clarify – how do you know LilaSandals or whatever is not in fact Sursandalet, since they’re from the same place and Sursandalet doesn’t have an Etsy shop?

shouldn’t the person with the FB account be notified, then they can fight it out mano – e – mano

Blatently reselling, and all tagged as art?
    Oh dear

    hkclothes2010 gone! They keep trying…..

  5. wahwah May 3, 2010 at 10:38 am #

    hkclothes just never gives up!

  6. Life During Wartime May 3, 2010 at 10:40 am #

After years of invading Etsy, sometimes weekly, I would think resellers like the painting guy and HKClothes could be considered as breaking some kind of law? Hasn’t Etsy corporate made their policies known to these resellers, and told them to cease and desist in some official manner?

Because resellers like these who upload massive amounts of inventory in a few hours are doing harm to legitimate artists and clothing makers on Etsy by pushing the true handmade listings out of the view of shoppers.

If Etsy can’t block them, can Etsy go legal on their arses?

And why can’t Etsy adapt their SCAMbot to report new shops adding dozens of listings really fast to whichever admin is on call 24/7, so that admin can check them out, and blow them out of the water way before a reseller shop loads 100 items?

  7. MadeByM**** May 3, 2010 at 10:58 am #

LDW….your last paragraph is common sense, which is quite lacking over there in Etsyland……

  8. Life During Wartime May 3, 2010 at 12:11 pm #

MadebyM****, I hate to admit it, but I am laughing at Etsy while I feel for the sellers at the same time.

I haven’t worked in IT for over 20 years, but even in the prehistoric era when staff had to drive over to the data center in the middle of the night to deal with problems, issues were addressed more efficiently than at Etsy today. Some of the possible resellers aren’t obvious cases, and take some work to figure out. I get that. What baffles me is why Etsy doesn’t seem aware of problems with simple solutions as they occur?

The ’emerging market developing nations’ resellers have branched out into vintage now. Nearly 2 weeks ago, a reseller of fake Chinese antiques loaded 100 items into the vintage category during the late afternoon/early evening Brooklyn time. You couldn’t browse the vintage main category and not see their stuff pouring in. Etsy never noticed. So, next day they opened a second 100 item shop. Both shops are still active and fully stocked.

I haven’t flagged these shops, and I won’t. I’m sure others have, especially vintage sellers who had their listings buried — and I think one of them should call these shops out in the forums.

Is vintage not being monitored for reseller invasions, or is there really no SCRAMbot?

  9. JohnCocktoasten May 3, 2010 at 1:06 pm #

That is a good question, Life. I am willng to bet that vintage isn’t being monitored.

  10. Cat Power May 3, 2010 at 1:11 pm #

I get the feeling that “SCRAMbot” is a figment of someone’s imagination, and has not, nor will it ever be, activated. It is undoubtedly a ‘keep them quiet for a while’ tidbit, like so many of the admin statements.

My Etsy bill last month was less than $2 for all my shops, and I’m letting everything expire. If things change drastically, I might consider relisting some things, but for the time being, Etsy might as well have disappeared off the face of the Earth, as far as I am concerned.

  11. MadeByM**** May 3, 2010 at 1:20 pm #

‘emerging market developing nations’ …..nice PC term!

  12. MadeByM**** May 3, 2010 at 1:20 pm #

I think I’ve heard it called “SCAMbot” on another blog….LOL!

  13. SteamedPunk May 3, 2010 at 2:16 pm #

As long as Etsy is making money off of this kind of shit, they are NEVER going to stop it. Never. Learn to live with it.
    Who cares?

  14. Etsy Person May 3, 2010 at 3:58 pm #

Maybe off topic, maybe not. My sources tell me that China is reproducing things like Jadeite dishes and Pyrex mugs. They are not marked in such a way that you would know they are reproductions. They want to target the Japanese market which is currently hot for such items but some of it is dribbling over here as well.

  15. Etsy Person May 3, 2010 at 4:02 pm #

    Interesting, eh?
    http://www.etsy.com/shop/haibo686

    Vintage ???? Not likely.

  16. Life During Wartime May 3, 2010 at 4:38 pm #

haibo686 has the same listing style as the other 2 fake vintage shops I found from April: they use only the ‘vintage’ category but no tags or materials. Good call out! I didn’t see this seller listing but it could have been during Etsy business hours. I’ll add this shop to my resellers folder.

Yeah, they’re vintage all right….a few weeks newer than what I removed from the cats’ litter boxes last night.

I emailed ECO the info on the other two Chinese vintage fakeries last week; I dunno if she didn’t get the mail or decided not to use it.

I’ll look on Ebay for haibo’s items and see what they charge for them there. Probably a buck or two each.

  17. Life During Wartime May 3, 2010 at 5:23 pm #

Wow, this was almost too easy!

    On Ebay:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Exquisite-ox-bone-CROSS-Pendant-bead-/260582374412
    On Etsy:
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/46108748/exquisite-ox-bone-cross-pendant-bead

And a $36 difference in price!

Oh, but wait…these ‘ox bone’ pendants may be plastic. Here’s a reseller of similar items based in the US on Bonanzle:
    http://www.bonanzle.com/booths/rockyridgeranch/items/PENDANT__Ox_Bone_Bead_CROSS__Crucifix

  18. wahwah May 3, 2010 at 5:41 pm #

I love how these items are all aged perfectly to the same degree of “vintageness”.

  19. Life During Wartime May 3, 2010 at 5:51 pm #

wahwah, some of them may be plastic! I have links in the comment above yours awaiting moderation.

    It’s a massive ripoff.

  20. Em May 3, 2010 at 6:20 pm #

I know this has been said a couple times….

HOW do they list so many things in one day? I think the bot that checks for this many items listed in a short amount of time would be really effective, and not too complicated, right?

  21. wahwah May 3, 2010 at 7:05 pm #

They can monitor the number of convos sent, why not items listed?

  22. wahwah May 3, 2010 at 7:09 pm #

The sexy fish ox bone pendant is on ebay for 4.99 BIN.

  23. Howie May 4, 2010 at 12:10 am #

I’m not sure what to think about this post… this is not concrete evidence, the shops could be one in the same.

  24. Etsy Person May 4, 2010 at 5:42 am #

I found three shops that seem to be the same last night. The one I posted before. But if you search vintage with “chinese” you will find three similar shops. All vague descriptions, little or no tagging, no materials etc. No basic details and no banner. The items are a little different but they are all basic c-r-a-p and not vintage in any event.

  25. WTFISAPDF May 4, 2010 at 6:29 am #

Reseller haven, glorified garage sales, Target specials, and now one of the snarky forum police has been hired as a real forum police. Instead of hiring more employees to weed out the crap, they add four people to monitor the forums. Maybe they wouldn’t need so many forum monitors if they got rid of the resellers and Target sale specials.

  26. wahwah May 4, 2010 at 7:10 am #

That’s exactly what I was thinking, WTFISAPDF.

  27. WTFISAPDF May 4, 2010 at 8:56 am #

Hiring Loosewire is like adding the final slap-in-the-face-we-don’t-give-a-shit-about-anything-anymore.

So… along with condoning the “resellers”, the “oh look at my 2003 vintage!” sellers, the “hey I bought this at Target and pulled off the price tag so it’s altered art” sellers, and the “how could you possibly accuse me of trademark violation when I post a disclosure” sellers…. Etsy condones the snark police.

I’m sure the snarky will just get snarkier, thinking it might lead to a paycheck from Etsy.

You hit a new low Etsy.

  28. Life During Wartime May 4, 2010 at 10:24 am #

I laughed out loud (and woke the cats) when I read that Etsy had hired more forum cops. It’s shops and listings that are hurting for oversight, not the forums. Most sellers and buyers don’t ever visit the forums fercryinoutloud. But having Etsy infested with resellers, faux vintage, and massive tag abuse frustrates buyers and messes with the sellers.

Yeah, the forums need more hypocrites to pass the cupcakes, each decorated with ‘the mutings will continue until morale improves’.

  29. Life During Wartime May 4, 2010 at 10:59 am #

Maybe the forums ARE a hotbed of discontent with Etsy. Someone called out this shop in a thread about reselling:
    http://www.etsy.com/shop/Kinseyh
and the shop is really full of violations.

The seller is what I would consider a hobby reseller, but somehow she got the (correct?) impression this is the type of shop you can open on Etsy. She’s open about it, and even displays the retail tags on her merchandise. Etsy has done very well getting the message out that the site is resale friendly.

  30. WTFISAPDF May 4, 2010 at 11:16 am #

Yes, loosewire was passing the cheesecake last night. They pass the brownies, the popcorn, the cupckaes, the cheesecake and the bullshit, ad nauseam.

OP: What’s a reseller? Can you show me an example of one?

Forum cop 1: We can’t answer your question because it would be calling out.

Forum cop 2: Oh here we go again. Pass the brownies.

Forum cop 3: *Pouring a glass of chablis*. Wine anyone?

Forum cop 1: You are asking us to violate the TOS by calling out. *passes cupcakes*

Forum cop 4: I think the OP is just trying to draw attention and promote her shop. Pass me a Bud Light and the popcorn please.

Forum cop 3: What? No one wants my chablis?? I mashed the grapes with my own feet. *passes brownies.*

Forum cop 5: OP definitely has a MO. We are too smart to fall for it, cookie.

Forum cop 1: Oh, pass me a cookie y’all.

Forum cop 2: While we’re waiting for Rob White to come close this trainwreck, let’s all secretly wish him a Happy Birthday. *Pass the birthday cake.*

  31. Life During Wartime May 4, 2010 at 11:40 am #

WTFISAPDF, I burped after reading your comment! That’s enough carbs to last me the rest of the month, maybe longer.

Eh, it’s another typical day on Etsy. I found a reseller loading items on TimeMachine2. The vintage showcases are about 30% items made by the seller. And Etsy Finds today answered the question once and for all about whether you need amazing photos to be chosen by Etsy for one of their features. It seems the ideal is a photo that gives no clue about what the item is, or how it looks.

  32. JK May 4, 2010 at 1:45 pm #

loosewire is a forum admin now? Sweet baby Jesus.

  33. Lizzy May 4, 2010 at 2:13 pm #

I just shook my head when I saw more forum police were added. They really need more help in the reseller area not the forums. Why am I not surprised though??
I have been on Etsy over 3 years and I have come to realize that buyers don’t care about the things sellers do. Seller has crappy feedback? Who cares? Buyers still purchase from them. Copyright infringement? Titles a mile long? Tag abuse? Mass produced? None of it matters because buyers still buy it.

Those practices might not be ones I use but I still see them all the time from sellers and it seems to me buyers don’t care.

    ——————————–

Yup, she is. And there’s a whole lot of WTFs going on.

I think it’s stupid of Etsy to hire anyone who is a member already. They should start with fresh folks who would be unbiased. At the least, they shouldn’t have hired someone who has insulted/offended half the community.

Being the prioritizers that they are, of course, there are four new forum mod’s and how many new hires to take care of resellers?

  35. JohnCocktoasten May 4, 2010 at 2:42 pm #

We do not need more forum mods. We need the resellers dealt with!

  37. ugh May 4, 2010 at 3:59 pm #

Even though I don’t know who they are, I do agree Etsy shouldn’t hire within the community like that.

  38. Cat Power May 4, 2010 at 4:27 pm #

John, I think your doubts are spot on! Hand made, my foot!

And Loosewire as Forum Mod is unfreakin’ believable…snark, snark, snark…talk about a royal pain in the ass….

  39. WTFISAPDF May 4, 2010 at 4:49 pm #

    @JohnCocktoasten
That reseller has “tree” in its shop name. That makes it Etsy okay.

    @ugh
Loosewire is a longtime jewelry seller with 99% feedback, who has been a long time forum snark. A lot of people are shocked that she was given a job because she’s terse and rude.

Ya, that “mug”? I’m going to start leaving my items completely out of the pictures from now on. That should get me in Finds.

I’m sorry, it was a teapot. The ugliest teapot ever.

  42. Brian May 4, 2010 at 5:43 pm #

Portobello was called out here back in January for earrings that she bought at rhinestonejewelry.com. Her shop was temporarily closed in February, and the 25+ items that she bought from 925e.com were removed. Now she is back, selling those same earrings that etsy removed. I’ve reported her again. This is why etsy should permanently remove resellers–not just “re-train” them. Once a liar and a fraud, always a liar and a fraud.

Earrings on her site for $79 (she sold a pair of these last week):
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/45597267/bridget-rhinestones-teardrop-earrings?ref=sr_list_1&ga_search_query=earrings&ga_search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_5210893

    Earrings at rhinestonejewelry.com for $4.50:
    http://www.rhinestonejewelry.com/15074.html

She has taken a bunch of the other earrings she bought at rhinestonejewelry.com and “changed” them a little (like added a pearl drop, or some other minor modification). I can’t WAIT for a buyer to leave feedback on one of these—I will email that person so fast, and show them they paid $79 for a $4.50 item.

  43. Life During Wartime May 4, 2010 at 5:50 pm #

wahwah, personally I love that teapot. It reminds me of some made by Paden City and other potteries during the 50s. But the first photo is a joke! I will always think of that handle now when some cupcakette in the forum tells people to work on their photography. Work it into a state of noncommunication, I think they mean. WTF?

  44. boots May 4, 2010 at 9:03 pm #

yes! that teapot picture was so pretentious!

  45. wahwah May 5, 2010 at 3:42 am #

I would probably have like the teapot way more if I hadn’t been so annoyed at that first pic! I don’t know much about pottery though.

  46. detroit May 5, 2010 at 5:06 am #

    OMG.

I’m letting these Etsy issues get way too far under my skin. (And I don’t think reading this blog every day helps).

Last night I had a dream that I encountered a gaggle of girls all wearing Etsy-trendy items. Cowls and fingerless gloves and rompers.

I wanted to turn to someone and say something sarcastic. But I knew people would think I was just being mean. And part of me felt guilty. Even though they were dressed in Etsy-darling finest. At least they weren’t wearing sweatshop clothes, right?

Right then, a big robot-monster with a giant boulder came running towards me, trying to flatten me with it. (I think this part of the dream was because I’ve been watching Battlestar Gallactica marathons – lol).

Anyone else here have Etsy dreams? I’m scared.

  47. it stinks May 5, 2010 at 6:28 am #

Detroit I will join you in some therapy if you want company.

Anyone still get the Etsy finds e-mail? I had to bring up the charm on a chain item in todays Fiesta Forever theme. It’s already sold! I have some of those charms and I have some chain. Actually I have many of the same charms as this shop. I refuse to simply put a charm on a chain and sell it. I refuse! I can do better work than this and I do. This is so disheartening.

With a name like greatdeal, who would believe the seller makes their own items?

Someone needs to start another thread in the forums about how a name can make or break your shop, warning resellers not to make this mistake. She needs to close that shop and reopen as TwitlingBirdyWingsHookersCrochet and I’m sure she’ll make hundreds of sales this year.

Wow, she’s really talented – sewing all those little thingys on that tank top like that. I don’t think my sewing machine would do that.
Also, that cool tank top comes with giant numbers across your boobs. That’s pretty convenient. Especially if you are wearing your really sparkly top in yoga class and you have to bend over. No one will be able to see to your flowers with that big number covering everything up.
It must be handmade because it says everything is quality handmade in the shop announcement.

I think I’ll go spend my hard earned money on that.

I applied for the job of forum moderator–and I don’t think I’ve offended anyone! Boy, what an annoyance that someone who has a contentious relationship with other sellers was hired over me! I thought it was an asset that I hadn’t posted much on the forums prior to applying–then no one would feel I was biased. I’m just feeling very blah about everything.

  61. crazy cat lady May 5, 2010 at 12:55 pm #

No, to be forum mod it’s advantageous to have a contentious relationship with people the mods don’t like. Neutral people need not apply.

  62. WTFISAPDF May 5, 2010 at 2:01 pm #

I remember the last time around sagittariusgallery had applied. No one knows the TOS better than she and they passed her over, I think for quickdraw (lisajune). Sag would have been far better than lisajune.

It’s really appalling that they hire someone who has such a contentious relationship with half the community. It’s such an “in your face” move on the part of Etsy admin, who really seem to love doing “in your face” type things.

Loosewire has 99% feedback (I think it’s four negs) and I swear, only the cupcakette’s (had to steal that term) can stand her. All my Etsy pals are in shock that someone so snarky and contentious could become a forum mod. Loosewire will really test the integrity of the forums, if there is any integrity.

@AF, did you get an interview?

  63. Really May 5, 2010 at 3:38 pm #

    Just FYI,
Awhile back loosewire canceled a sale that I paid for because she was out of supplies.
After weeks of trying to get the item or my money back, she finally sent the item.
It was then I found out, when trying to leave feedback, that the sale had been cancelled.
I also spoke with a few other people she did the same thing to. We all reported it to Etsy, and nothing happened.

    Yeah, great hire, Etsy.

  64. wahwah May 5, 2010 at 4:48 pm #

I think I’ll be posting even less in the forums than I do now. Just reading them makes my blood boil.

Most of the sellers bitching about miss-tagging are guilty of doing it themselves.

  65. AF May 6, 2010 at 6:47 pm #

WTFISAPDF, I didn’t even get that far–I live in the NorthEast, but not in NY. I did some rounds of “what if” forum writing assignments and some conversations with Rob White, but nothing. I partly applied because I wanted to see some better admin/seller interaction in the forums–no such luck with getting in there for me though! Maybe my philosophy that closing a thread should be a last resort wasn’t what they wanted to hear. . .

  66. lisa May 7, 2010 at 1:51 pm #
