    “hand-picked” is the new handmade.

  2. Life During Wartime June 12, 2010 at 9:54 am #

‘hand-picked’ is the new ‘sharing’, too.

The shop is disappointing, for a reseller. I mean, where is the fabulous Israeli enamelwork and colorful contemporary costume jewelry?

  3. JOINAA June 12, 2010 at 10:43 am #

Seen it all before. “You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friend’s nose”. You also can’t call “hand picked” handmade. I just picked a mess of blueberries, but if I were to resell them I certainly wouldn’t call them handmade.

  4. holly June 12, 2010 at 11:10 am #

Yeah, definitely not allowed! It IS marked as supplies (not handmade), and while you can sell pendants that could be used in other pieces, the dos and don’ts specifically say “A commercial crafting supply is not a commercial item that, although it may be used in crafting, is ready to use as is” – which these obviously are.

  5. blood, sweat and tears June 12, 2010 at 11:44 am #

“definitely a breech of the tous and frankly if you let this stay, i am out of here, and i will suggest that others i know will leave, too. my dh and i have been supporting ourselves with our craft for more than ten years, and this shop is a slap in the face- you must remove this commercially produce inventory…..”

what i wrote in my flag of shop…..

I’m on the fence about this one…

Wow – quite the markup for buying the exact same items from their Etsy store, as opposed to the Ebay store. I’m confused.

The “925 Silver Hamsa Khamsa Fatima Hand Blue Opal Pendant Necklace” is as low as $1.00 to $4 for ‘buy it now’ on Ebay. The exact same thing they’re charging (and have successfully sold) $12 on Etsy:

    Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/925-Silver-Hamsa-Khamsa-Hand-Blue-Opal-Pendant-Necklace-/390206733519?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ada223ccf

    Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/43938656/925-silver-hamsa-khamsa-fatima-hand-blue

So, are these people just confused, and don’t realize Etsy isn’t Ebay (supposedly – lol). Or are they knowingly scamming.

I guess to people’s credit – with all the crap that’s allowed on Etsy these days – I could see how a newcomer wouldn’t notice that Etsy’s supposed to be ‘handmade’.

With all the commercial items listed in handmade – it’s virtually indistinguishable from Ebay.

Yeah – I have a vacuum I’d like to sell. It was totally assembled – with love – by a person! Handmade!!

  8. JOINAA June 12, 2010 at 12:26 pm #

Everything is gone from that shop. Looking at the sold, sure doesn’t look like handmade to me. Looks like trendoid manufactured.

  9. Life During Wartime June 12, 2010 at 1:08 pm #

I am going to have nightmares about the owl totebag!

  10. factorygirlashli June 12, 2010 at 2:21 pm #

weird. it was all there at the time that I posted.

  11. Thud June 12, 2010 at 3:31 pm #

    What about this one?
They are a retail store, they do NOT make their items, well, not all of them (any? of them)!

  12. JOINAA June 12, 2010 at 3:38 pm #

Thud, that shop looks great to me.

  13. Bedazzled VONdom June 12, 2010 at 5:00 pm #

    Palumba sez:

“Best of all our toys over 80% of our toys are made in the USA, the others are crafted in Fair Trade Cooperatives.”

    http://www.palumba.com/about/

  14. thud June 12, 2010 at 6:02 pm #

12… sure, it is a great RETAIL shop~ jus because it looks nice doens;t make it legal. They are retailers, they do not make their items.

  15. thud June 12, 2010 at 6:11 pm #

Many of the Palumba items are from here:
    http://www.camdenrose.com/
some are fair trade from peru…
they don’t make a thing which is, like any other reseller, grossly unfair to those who do make and sell similar items.

  16. jcjohn June 13, 2010 at 6:40 am #

No comments on the brouhaha going on over at etsy yet?

  17. JK June 13, 2010 at 7:04 am #

Holy crap, jcjohn! You weren’t kidding about the brouhaha.

  18. detroit June 13, 2010 at 7:26 am #

Yeah, palumba CARRIES cute items. Doesn’t make them though. Actually – I like their beeswax wood polish. I have a nice end grain cutting board that is in desperate need of oiling. But I can’t bear to do what everyone recommends – namely oil it with mineral oil. Ack! I don’t want to eat petroleum with my carrots!

Well, I’m sure I can find the polish elsewhere.

    Hypothetical ethical dilemma:

If a known reseller had something you wanted / needed, at a good price, and you had difficulty finding it elsewhere…….

    Would you buy it?

  19. detroit June 13, 2010 at 7:26 am #

I mean an Etsy reseller, of course.

  20. detroit June 13, 2010 at 7:27 am #

Oooh! Off to see the brouhaha!

  21. detroit June 13, 2010 at 7:29 am #

So I don’t have to hunt – is the brouhaha in the forums? And if so, where?

I’m not an Etsy forum person. So am out of the loop.

    Sorry.

  22. detroit June 13, 2010 at 7:34 am #

Is it about the phone booths?

Okay – here’s an issue I have with the phone booths – aside from all the others….

So, say they do hire full time phone support. A poor person is supposed to spend 8 hours, working inside a BOOTH? I’ve had small offices before. Windowless even. And it sucks. So, I can’t imagine sitting alone in a BOOTH all day. Fielding angry calls.

I think that’s against some international human rights protocols or something. lol.

  23. detroit June 13, 2010 at 7:40 am #

Holy crap. Shutting down shops in retaliation for posted comments???? ETSY IS OFF THE RAILS!

All of the other issues bugged me. But this literally turns my stomach. This is some big brother, orwelian, Gregor Samsa nightmare type shit!

  24. JOINAA June 13, 2010 at 8:09 am #

Retaliation against sellers who post opinions about Etsy staff fuckups is NO NEW NEWS. This is what they have been doing for years.
They take it personally, then kill your business in a fit of pique and revenge. Do not take RobW’s smarmy politically correct verbiage as an indication that he is a professional adult, because he is not. MaryMary? She’s more concerned with the way she comes across, and if she makes a mistake she is not woman enough to deal with it as an adult professional.

They ALL need to go, where they can find out what it means to work for a living.

  25. thud June 13, 2010 at 8:45 am #

detroit~ 3 parts jojoba oil, one part beeswax, melt together and let cool. That’s all there is to it 🙂

  26. Cosmic Yuk June 13, 2010 at 9:31 am #

There is always, always more than meets the eye when it comes to mutings and shop closings. Always. I know of someone who was perma-muted from the forums, and while the appearance of their muting seemed to be unfair, there was more to it than what they presented or what people ‘saw’.

  27. jcjohn June 13, 2010 at 10:02 am #

And while they might “deserve” muting, the resellers and blatant abusers keep on keepin’ on!

April and Bijou have my sympathy!

  28. detroit June 13, 2010 at 1:05 pm #

    Oh – cool. Thanks thud!

  29. detroit June 13, 2010 at 2:11 pm #

I’ve needed to clean the kitchen all day. Can you tell I’m procrastinating?

So, did these sellers REALLY do something so awful to deserve to be closed? I have no idea if they’re annoying or not. But, it’s the internet. People have a fundamental right to be annoying.

One who was closed has thousands of sales. I assume she’s not a reseller.

Seems like there are far worse shops on Etsy (assuming there is some back story, and this person DID do something ‘wrong’).

Why doesn’t Etsy close all the resellers too? Then. If they’re sticklers for the TOU.

  30. Penny June 13, 2010 at 4:31 pm #

So who got shut down? I’ve never seen anyone say shop names..

  31. bellacruz June 13, 2010 at 5:10 pm #

Shops that got muted were AprilMarieMai and Bijoutiful. I don’t know if there were additional shops. I believe one of the shops had an “illegal” link and was shut down. When the other shop asked why, she was also shut down (and I think she requested the closure of her other shops).

There, of course, has been a lot of sympathy expressed for them, my own included.

  32. bellacruz June 13, 2010 at 5:11 pm #

And, I am not posting anonymously.

  33. bellacruz June 13, 2010 at 5:12 pm #

There are those who insist it was previous forum behavior that got these sellers muted and brick walled. Unfortunately, they cannot defend themselves on etsy to answer those charges.

  34. detroit June 14, 2010 at 6:09 am #

Hm….of course I have no clue. But – theoretically speaking – being obnoxious in forums seems like a really, really minor ‘offense’ compared to reselling.

    Resellers defraud their customers.

  35. MadeByM**** June 14, 2010 at 10:35 am #

The two mentioned above have had their shops opened back up.

Reading the Storque comments and then comments over at EB have really pushed me over the edge about how I feel about Etsy. I was already fed up with them because of the reseller issues, FP issues, etc., but this fiasco has really turned me off. I’m only keeping my shop open for the limited exposure to Etsy’s client base and hopefully some redirection to my other site. And I’ve made sure I’m “Etsy legal” as to the linking for my other sites……I guess I may have to look into Artfire again…..

  36. Palumba/Camden Rose July 13, 2010 at 5:16 pm #

First I wish to get the facts correct. EVERY item that we sell on ETSY is made by us, Camden Rose. We are Camden Rose! The items that are made by our coop in Peru (knitted fruit and dolls) are not for sale on Etsy. Only the items that are made by us using our own hands are for sale on Etsy. We have gone through a FULL screening process conducted by the Etsy staff and they have agreed that we are the little elves. Yes, we do carry other peoples items in our online store and on our website – but not on Etsy – that would be wrong.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact us at any time. hello@palumba.com

    Dear Posters.

First of all thank you very much for the PR.

We were new to Etsy and did not quite know how to tag correctly.
We have a lot of hand made items ( like personalised name necklaces , rings and bracelet) as well as manufactured pendants.

All the mistagged items were tagged as supplies. All the handmade items remained at the handmade tag – which is correct.

Now we are compliant to the Etsy laws.

You are welcome to see for yourselves:
