Annoying Mistagging- knottybabywear

20 Jun

Even though we are only presenting two, the whole shop is chock full of annoying mistagging to the point that it seems they list everything that the item is NOT.

Hairbows that are tagged-children, accessories, baby, boy, girl, leg warmers arm, legwarmers, baby legs, ec elimination, communication, cloth diaper, toddler. What exactly is ec elimination? Communication? Um?

Onesie that is tagged-children, accessories, baby, boy, tshirt, short sleeved, long sleeved, clothing, socks, onesie, neck tie, applique, leg warmers arm, legwarmers. I absolutely don’t understand this strategy, is someone that took the time to say “long sleeve” they want to see a short sleeved onesie??

We should all take the time to drop them a convo thanking them for contributing to the one thing that drives buyers away from Etsy. Thanks guys, thumbs up!

    I’m warning you –

  2. Fed UP June 20, 2010 at 9:56 pm #

Basically, you don’t put diapers on your baby, you follow thier cues to take them to the toilet. I know, I know – it sounds crazy, but I have a friend who did this with 3 of her kids from BIRTH and by the time they were crawling they would take themselves to a baby potty and she didn’t have to worry about diapers. Nice.

    I’m just not that motivated.

  3. Fed UP June 20, 2010 at 9:57 pm #

But what that has to do with hair bows is freaking beyond me.

  4. wahwah June 21, 2010 at 3:51 am #

And how does a crawling baby eliminate in public? What if you are say….at Walmart? Do you let the baby crawl around on the floor?

  5. RocksInMySocks June 21, 2010 at 3:58 am #

    Her sales are incredible.

The mistagging is horrendous but must be working for her.

Isn’t she in the forums a lot?

Tagging is a nightmare. Since Etsy does not sell cars, I will use cars as the example. I am looking for a Chevy. It could be sedan, van, SUV, truck. When I run a search of “Chevy”, I find page after page of “Ford, Volvo, Chevy, VW, running errands, car parts” etc. Not the Chevy I am looking for necessarily but lots and lots of things that aren’t what I am looking for
Worse yet is when you convo a seller to ask the details about something they claim is a “Chevy” but definitely isn’t and they tell you how expert they are and how much they know. (and they don’t).

Yeah, she’s there whining about how her husband left her and she’s a single mom working to support her children….

It’s almost as bad as a few sellers who’ve posted about just getting fired and all of the nice people in the forum go and buy from them, really I’ve seen it twice.

  8. Etsy Person June 21, 2010 at 5:51 am #

I have another question for those who might know the answer to this tagging mystery. Could this seller and others be using something like Etsy hacks or some program batch listing program that allows them to use the same tags over and over without actually entering the tags by hand?

  9. jenn June 21, 2010 at 6:24 am #

    Here’s some tag, um, creativity…

  10. wahwah June 21, 2010 at 6:26 am #

Yes, there is a Copy Listing hack that reuses the same tags from another item, but you CAN change them. Obviously this seller doesn’t care to though.

Wahwah, having worked in the slightly hippie section of retail that is natural foods and had customers who practised this, I can say that it usually happens exactly like you’d think. I’d like to say that the parents always were apologetic, took responsibility and cleaned up their child’s mess, but I’d be lying.

  12. boots June 21, 2010 at 6:55 am #

did anyone else catch that regretsy post in the forums? how did anyone not come out and say that whole penny necklace was just some regretsy bait?!

  13. MadeByM**** June 21, 2010 at 7:27 am #

Really? It’s hard enough housebreaking your puppy!

  14. it stinks June 21, 2010 at 7:54 am #

Some people use their sold listings when listing things (similar things, like say baby onsies) so that they don’t have to retype all the same stuff. All you have to do is maybe tweak the description and put in new pics. It saves alot of time when listing.
Maybe when doing that, she forgot to change the tags.
I did that just the other day.
It took me awhile to figure out the tags didn’t describe the new widget I had listed and to change them.

  15. Life During Wartime June 21, 2010 at 9:09 am #

Putting a wad of mostly irrelevant tags on every listing was happening on Ruby Lane ages ago. It was as bad as Etsy before the site was juried.

Tags are never a good idea for a venue as large as Etsy.

  16. Cosmic Yuk June 21, 2010 at 10:08 am #

How ironic. I convo’d this seller a year or so ago asking why she was using irrelevant tags since legwarmers *weren’t* diapers and she basically told me that Etsy said she could so I could go pound salt.

Strangely, that convo no longer appears in my list, and I don’t delete them. I’ve flagged her numerous times for mistagging and nothing appears to change, so I have to surmise that Etsy does indeed permit her to do it.

  17. Cosmic Yuk June 21, 2010 at 10:19 am #

Oooh, found it in my hubby’s account. I remember I used that one so she couldn’t retaliate. I blocked out his name, otherwise here is the convo, read from the bottom up:

Knotty Legs — Leg Warmers for baby or toddler — red and purple argyle — FREE SHIPPING on ALL Leg Warmers, listing #24591283

Not according to the tagging rules I’m not. Despite the fact that you are selling them, they are still mistagged. Tags should be what the item is, not it’s potential uses.

you are wrong. Cloth diapering moms buy from me DAILY.

Why are these tagged cloth diaper? don’t you know how frustrating it is to search for cloth diaper and find leggings in there? This is considered tag abuse since the tag cloth diaper has nothing to do with leggings.

Add private tags to this convo

  18. Life During Wartime June 21, 2010 at 10:34 am #

I think knottybabywear is right: Etsy does allow tag and category abuse.

Are there any stories floating around of any shop being told to clean up their tags or stop listing in inappropriate categories?

  19. MadeByM**** June 21, 2010 at 10:34 am #

Sounds like she hit up the right Etsy admin if/when she asked……….but we know that doesn’t mean squat……just like when an Etsy seller was told she could sell her proofreading services!

  20. Fed UP June 21, 2010 at 10:47 am #

About going out with a baby who did elimination communication – the idea is that you pay SUPER CLOSE attention to the baby and you should learn their cues and rush them to the bathroom. Nothing as amusing as watching a mom hold a peeing 6 month old over an adult size toilet. My friend usually put diapers on her kids if they were going to be out for more than a quick run, just in case there was an accident. I think she said they only had one or two with each kid. She’s a brave woman.

  21. wahwah June 21, 2010 at 12:38 pm #

Knotty sounds like a spoiled little pissant and I wouldn’t buy from her if my kid’s legs were all scratched up and bruised from crawling to the toilet and begging to pee all day long.

  22. Cosmic Yuk June 21, 2010 at 1:10 pm #

I wonder how my children survived well into adulthood without ever wearing leggings.

  23. wahwah June 21, 2010 at 3:03 pm #

Yuk, maybe you should make them wear some now, just to be safe!

  24. Cosmic Yuk June 21, 2010 at 3:17 pm #

Yeah, I’m thinkin’ that’s not gonna happen any time soon, wahwah.

  25. JohnCock June 22, 2010 at 9:36 am #

    What a cunt.

  26. uh-huh June 22, 2010 at 1:54 pm #

I think it’s true, Etsy just doesn’t care. How long does it take to train “new staff” ? I can understand researching reseller stuff would be more involved. Tagging is fucking simple. Get somebody on it.
I and others have reported blatant mistaggers and tag stuffers over and over and over (including ones pointed out here) and nothing happens. It’s beyond ridiculous. They might as well just say “the rules are there are no rules” and be done with it.
    And, backlog? My ass.

  27. Thud June 22, 2010 at 6:51 pm #

I notice she also doesn’t indicate the materials of her legwarmers~ they are made from cheap knee high socks (polyester) and she has completely lifted the idea and marketing from Baby Legs ~ who do make cotton ones…

I wouldn’t be buying ~ they are hopped up cheap walmart socks.

  28. RulesMeanZip June 28, 2010 at 6:54 pm #

Gotta love it when tag-stuffers and mistaggers flaunt themselves in the forums, almost daring anyone to say something. A certain other BIG seller comes to mind….anyone looking for a “scrabble tile wood” or a “resin steampunk”? No? Maybe just a steel ball chain then. You’ll find them all in the same listing.

  29. theeyesseeit June 30, 2010 at 10:06 pm #

They’ve been flagged many times. spam tagging is part of their “marketing strategy”

  30. Andrea July 23, 2010 at 9:56 pm #

People like her make Etsy frustrating for all of us. Too bad she can’t play fair like the rest of us.

  31. rain September 1, 2010 at 5:15 am #

Sorry calling these hopped up wallmart socks is implying that she actually made them. Looks more like they were bought on online and here is a link to thousands of them!

  32. bmod September 7, 2010 at 7:22 am #

I just have to comment knottybabywear…you’re right they are cheap dollar store socks that she’s using and I feel sorry for the people buying them because they think they’re getting a great deal! Free shipping or not, they suck! She’s killing it for the sellers who are actually using high quality cotton socks for leg warmers!

  33. September 12, 2014 at 1:16 am #

Aw, this was an exceptionally nice post.

Taking the time and actual effort to make a top notch article… but what can I say… I hesitate
a whole lot and never seem to get anything done.
