Oh my gosh you guys! I found great (vintage? Must be) Fendi and Alexander Wang on Etsy!!! (Never mind that Alexander Wang himself wouldn’t even qualify as vintage, since I think he’s barely 20 – lol. He must’ve designed this one in the womb:

And check out this beautiful, strangely photoshopped, surely authentic Fendi piece:

Sigh, stay classy Etsy!

Are the bridal gown sketches in the bottom thumbnail supposed to make us think they are the designer/manufacturer/ handmaker?

Ugh, this stuff is ruining etsy.

But remember, according to all the Etsy naive and kiss-asses, we are jealous hating bitches who have no life….how dare we question if these are handmade or not!

  7. Andrea June 22, 2010 at 6:24 pm #

God Marni, you are so put upon. Just because people disagree about personal attacks on legit shop owners doesn’t mean that they don’t appreciate call outs on etsy illegal shops. But please, continue being purposely obtuse.

  8. Life During Wartime June 22, 2010 at 6:46 pm #

We are not only jealous hating bitches. We are now RACIST jealous hating bitches if we call out a Chinese factory shop.

Etsy should be handling this situation — and I mean by handling making these shops disappear as soon as they start listing items — without expecting the community to flag them.

These shops have been open for weeks? WTF???

  9. Life During Wartime June 22, 2010 at 7:16 pm #

On the Front Page now (warning: racist call out of a seller from Asia)

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/49680087/milk-bottle

Seller has ‘vintage’ in her Etsy ID, and a shop full of newish looking stuff listed in various handmade categories. My guess is these things are neither vintage nor made by the seller.

    Unacceptable Etsy!!!!!!!!!!

    Flagged over and over.

  11. Life During Wartime June 22, 2010 at 11:24 pm #

Wow…the paintings shops used to disappear within hours. Now they last a week.

  12. detroit June 23, 2010 at 2:00 am #

Did that painting shop – aifei – really get seven $100 sales already???

    Etsy! Cmon!

I read an article in the NYTimes about these Chinese painting factories – and yep – they’re sweatshops. People paint for 12 hour days, and make squat.

I can’t find the NYTimes link, but I found this other, older one. I’ll paste into next post.

    Suuuuure you do.

Etsy just needs another site for this type of stuff. Obviously Etsy can’t keep the rule breakers from coming, but if nothing is done the integrity of the homemade site will be completely lost.

Buyers just go elsewhere when they feel they are being hoodwinked. They see Etsy as a complete entity, not a group of individual operations. One bad apple and all that.

the painting ones really piss me off…they are so clearly churned out. i spend such a long time making originals and for what? nothing, clearly…people buy this stuff & there is no way they don’t know it wasn’t done by one person.

  20. MadeByM**** June 23, 2010 at 7:53 am #

OMG Andrea………its continuously discussed in the forums by the newbies, the naive, the kiss-asses, the cupcakes and the Etsy cheerleaders that they hate ECO and Regretsy because they make fun of and/or question if things are handmade or not. Appreciation of these blogs are NEVER discussed in the forums! I’m NOT put upon……..I don’t even give a flying “f” about Etsy anymore. I only read these blogs for entertainment purposes now. And I scan the forums once in awhile only to find out nothing has changed.

And when the people of San Francisco see what she is using for “location”, she is likely to be run out of town on a rail.

Putting the label “racist” on everything is the new control method. Whenever someone wants to be self-righteous these days, thats the term used. No logic is involved, just smugness and a need to be “right”.

  23. JOINAA June 23, 2010 at 10:02 am #

Racism is the new Godwin’s Law. Littleput loses.

  24. uh-huh June 23, 2010 at 10:03 am #

The phrase, “I’m just telling it like it is” is also a big winner. It generally appears to mean, “I’m right and you’re not so you might as well STFU and go away”.

  25. Cosmic Yuk June 23, 2010 at 11:27 am #

And no, Etsy should NOT have a section or site for resellers, are you daft? That’s an open invitation for every single type of item that is handmade to be undercut and undermined.

People may have a choice to buy cheaper, mass manufactured goods on and off the internet, but Etsy should NOT provide this as an option on their site, under their name.

  26. crapgawker June 23, 2010 at 12:26 pm #

It just breaks my heart to see items that are not handmade (by the seller), true vintage or a legitimate supply on Etsy.

It also makes me wonder how many items I’ve bought that didn’t accurately fall into one of the aforementioned categories.

I try to be a lot more careful now.

Sigh. Too bad they already do.

And, what crapgawker said. I know it’s easy to get frustrated with ‘stupid buyers’. It seems so obvious these items are mass produced. Obvious, to us, that is.

It’s like – those optical illusion things – find the face hidden in the cloud. And, once you see it – you can’t NOT see it.

The junk is glaringly obvious to us.

But a lot of people really have no idea. And like they always say (usually to defend resellers – lol) – some people are very skilled at what they make, and their items look ‘professional’.

I see some amazing stuff – that is truly handmade. I am in awe, and there’s no way I could make such items.

So, I can see how a ‘regular person’ who feels they don’t have any skills in the arts, and has never done so much as draw a stick figure, would be easily duped into buying factory made.

Every forum thread littleput starts (and there are MANY) is a promo. After starting that lame ass racism thread, I tend to think she’s a drinker too.

I wonder if her tutorial includes a section on posting promo threads.

No, I am not daft. The stuff is already there. They are already competing. A seperate site would give buyers the idea that there is a difference. True quality handmade would be more visible, not less.

Under etsy’s name or not, the competition is there.
