UPDATE: Cosmic Yuk made a great list of links:

I found Urban Lane’s wholesale source for her shop. A couple of things I didn’t find, but I suspect they’re from the outlet shop and they no longer have them. Still, there is enough proof here:

Those rings are even cheaper on amazon.com . I bought one for an ex a little over a year ago for about 6 bucks free shipping 😛

yeah, the jewellerypendant shop uses the term “convo” a couple times in their shop policies which would indicate to me that they’re pretty familiar with etsy

  4. Life During Wartime June 24, 2010 at 10:05 am #

The jewellerypendant shop could be Etsy legal if they moved their items to supplies. Not that there is much chance of Etsy requiring them to do it.

Handmade pendants are allowed as jewelry–there is a whole category for them. Scrabble tiles, anyone?

  6. b unit June 24, 2010 at 11:02 am #

My new shopping strategy is to look on etsy first and then check ebay for lower prices on the same goods. Last night I was checking out feather headbands. On etsy, they’re $11.00 plus $3.00 shipping. On Ebay, they cost $2.99 + $1.95 shipping.

The seller did add the jewel and a clip, so it’s etsy legal, but I’d rather cut out the middlewoman.

Yeah, seller from hongkong, no location, no profile, I’m sure they made those pendants themselves.

  8. Nicole June 24, 2010 at 11:43 am #

A Swarovski crystal with a bail and no chain is handmade jewelry?

  9. Life During Wartime June 24, 2010 at 11:47 am #

I think most pendants are handmade unless they are a single piece of plastic. Most jewelry is handmade as well, unless it is a single piece that can be formed entirely by machines.

But the question here is, handmade by the seller or not?

I agree with Cosmic Yuk^^^^above, and I doubt the shop owner handmakes the pendants they sell. So they can be sold as supplies.

  10. Molly June 24, 2010 at 12:17 pm #

I’m not sure why the pendants are wrong, I could make all of them in one night. When I sell my stone pendants, they are jewelry, what’s the difference ?? But hey, the calling out will bring her more sales anyway.

  11. Whisperia June 24, 2010 at 12:23 pm #

I don’t understand why they’re not jewelry, either. Must it be on a chain to be called jewelry?

  12. JK June 24, 2010 at 12:53 pm #

I would think a pendant might need to be on a chain or cord to make it wearable in order to qualify as ‘jewelry’. It’s rather hard to wear one otherwise.

  13. Nicole June 24, 2010 at 1:06 pm #

As far as I’m aware jewelry has always been defined as a finished piece that can be worn on it’s own. Not something it could be, it could be necklace if you had a chain.

Wire wrapped charms are supplies used to make a necklace?

  14. Life During Wartime June 24, 2010 at 1:13 pm #

Nicole, the pendants would be just like charms if they didn’t have the silver jump ring attached — which you have to have for the pendant to lay flat when it’s hanging on a chain. Most charms and pendants sold as supplies don’t have that extra ring.

  15. Nicole June 24, 2010 at 1:17 pm #

So you can list charms as handmade jewelry if you add a jump ring? You still can’t wear a charm with a jump ring on it’s own as a piece of jewelry.

  16. pinks June 24, 2010 at 1:34 pm #

*sigh* don’t hate me, but honest-to-g0d any seller with dozens/hundreds of cheapo stuff at 2.99 a pop, located in shanghai, beijing, china, etc. is automatically suspicious to me. Not that people here in the US don’t do the same thing, but can’t possibly do it for that cheap.

  17. Life During Wartime June 24, 2010 at 1:45 pm #

Nicole, okay I see where you are going with this. Honestly, the way Etsy works now I think you could get away with adding a jump ring to a commercial pendant and calling it assembled jewelry.

    And that’s not good.

  18. Nicole June 24, 2010 at 1:49 pm #

The ‘jewellerypendant’ store linked above doesn’t have the usual super cheap prices. I don’t see how you can really question them any more than the swarovski wire wrapped pendants unless you can prove that the stones aren’t hand set. The stones are irregular shapes so the settings would probably have to be hand set rather than machine set. I don’t see any difference from them than with the briguysgirl store. Personally I don’t see how either of the stores should be listing in ‘Jewelry’, pendants without chains are not finished jewelry.

Perhaps. I read one of them were the buyer complained it didn’t look like ‘raw brass” but looked like “shiny gold”. Which tells me the buyer doesn’t know what raw brass looks like.

As a buyer I consider pendants jewelry whether they are on a chain or not. In fact I was just in the silversmith shop in our Old Market looking at pendants and they referred to them as jewelry just like they referred to all the jewelry in the jewelry shop as jewelry. They did not correct me nor I them by saying no this isn’t jewelry it’s a pendant. It’s jewelry.

  34. PussDaddy June 25, 2010 at 11:50 am #

I mean hell you can’t always wear a pin on a chain either but it is jewelry too.

As of right now, all 3 shops are empty, not gone, at least empty.

  39. Briguysgirls June 25, 2010 at 9:41 pm #

Does anyone realize that I hand wrap these stones myself?? No? Well I do. A gemstone that is hand set in a professional wire wrap with an attached soldered ring is a piece of jewelry folks, it could also be supplies but it’s jewelry and totally legal 🙂 thanks!

  40. Nicole June 26, 2010 at 12:46 am #

I don’t see anyone questioning whether you add the wire to the charm. And please don’t imply you solder the jump rings yourself. If you’re happy to see supplies in the already flooded jewelry category then go for it. I see some other people have jumped on your bandwagon, and there will be thousands of commercial supplies with ‘bails’ on them listed in jewelry pretty soon.

This isn’t about what the dictionary, or the local jeweler defines jewelry as. This is about what’s listed on Etsy, and what they consider finished jewelry. A mass produced Swarovski charm with a bail on it is hardly finished jewelry, is it now?

This is where the slippery slope starts and the definition of what is finished jewelry is turned to shit, and the importers start listing factory produced charms with a bail into ‘handmade jewelry’.

  41. wahwah June 26, 2010 at 7:17 am #

How do you wear a pendant without a chain? It’s just not wearable by itself, therefore it is a handmade supply, not jewelry. Suck it.

  42. Cosmic Yuk June 26, 2010 at 9:47 am #

Iknow this is off topic, but it’s the reason why I wish they’d never allowed commercial supplies in the first place. Handmade supplies, fine, but not commercial.

If I’m looking for a new pendant to put on a chain I already own, I wouldn’t think (as a regular person) to look in supplies, to me, that means stuff to make my own jewelry, and I don’t consider sliding a pendant on a chain ‘making jewelry’.

Jewelry makers know that many buyers have their own chains and look for pendants that don’t already come on a chain.

If it’s handmade, what difference does it make, really? The problem is the commercial pendants being passed off as handmade, and being allowed under the guise of supplies.

  43. RocksInMySocks June 26, 2010 at 3:28 pm #

Cosmic Yuk, Thanks for finding all those links! I’m so happy to see her trio of scamming shops shut down. Let’s hope Etsy isn’t coaching her to reopen. She already claimed she was handmaking everything so I’m not sure how she could change things and be legal.

  44. Cosmic Yuk June 26, 2010 at 8:05 pm #

It was a lot of work, work we shouldn’t have to be doing, but since sellers are going to lie and flagrantly oppose the rules, one or two will get under my skin enough to dig. And this one made it so easy stocking all 3 shops from the same wholesaler.

It does make me wonder why I try so hard to make my stuff. I found a great wholesaler with fabulous prices of stuff that would fit right in with the Etsy look. With a small investment, I could make a killing and probably be a featured seller. Too bad it flies in the face of being an independent and creative artisan. Something I happen to believe in.

“suck it”?? really?? yeah, that’s constructive. Thanks for that valuable input!
As for hand wrapped pendants, they ARE jewelry. I have tond of chains and I don’t feel like buying yet ANOTHER chain just to have the pendant attached, so what do I, as a buyer, look for? A finished hand crafted pendant filed under JEWELRY becuase as a simple buyer, not the advanced crafter, I would not ever think or even WANT to look under “supplies” as that entails me haviong to make the pendant myself. I want one already lovingly made, by a real person, in his or her real home, not a factory.
So you, my friend, can kindly suck THAT.
    wow.

I don’t care if you don’t know how to shop. Sellers should have to follow the damn rules even if their sales are better if they don’t.

Is is so hard to search for “pendant”?

Ya, my sales would be better if I could list my earrings under the necklace category, but because some of us actually stick to the TOU, I don’t.

Yah, but wahwah, put on your buyer only – non jewelry making hat for a moment. If susie is looking for another pendant to go on her chain so she can change her look, where do you think susie is going to look? Supplies sounds like stuff to make jewelry, not finished jewelry pieces, of which a pendant is. Some people make pendants for others to incorporate into jewelry so they are a supply, but for some of us, we feel our customer is better served finding us in jewelry because they are looking for a finished piece to slide onto their chain.

There actually is a category for pendants under jewelry, so I don’t know what the hell I was blabbing about. As long as the pendant is listed there and not under necklaces than that’s fine.
