zhanga & a group of 4…

15 Jul

Wonder why they don’t say these are handmade…?! They haven’t been coached yet I guess!

Ok, this seller has an item featured on Regretsy, and upon closer inspection of her shop as well as her 3 other shops, I felt the need to publicize her blatant ignorance of the category and tagging rules of the site.  I will list her shops, and you can click on any item in any one of them and I guarantee you they will either be 1)IN the wrong category, 2) severely abusing tags to show up in unrelated searches or 3) or selling items that don’t belong on Etsy at all, or any combination of the three.

OMG you’re right. I clicked on items in every one of those links and there was something wrong with each listing. Major tagging violations. Let me guess, they were featured on Regretsy for listing something as Steampunk right? They have that as a tag on lots of their items. ???

  2. Life During Wartime July 15, 2010 at 9:57 am #

Wow, this hits close to home. Most of the antiques malls and co-ops within a 50 mile radius of my condo look like those 4 shops! That’s why I only sell online now. You can pick up any random item in a booth (ordered from a wholesale catalog) and the seller has labeled it variously as ‘prim’ or ‘antique’ or ‘handcraft’ or ‘old’…even if they are all the same item in different fabrics or paint finishes. And the spelling is pretty typical, too. Jewerly? WTF?

  3. L July 15, 2010 at 10:52 am #

1.99 per pair?? Are you kidding?

These scream reseller like there is no tomorrow. Please help get this BS closed down.

  4. Disgusted July 15, 2010 at 11:38 am #

The owner of the 4 shops seems to like to use new words. The new word of this month is “steam punk”. It doesn’t matter if you know what it means or what style it is. Just use it to get people to your shop. Buyers are dummies and won’t know if its steam punk or not. Likewise the “chalkware” santa that is a stuffed rug with “quilt” for one of its tags.

    Same with this shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ZenAndCoffee

  6. Life During Wartime July 15, 2010 at 12:04 pm #

Here is today’s self-callout forum thread from an Etsy ‘global marketplace’ shop:

  7. Inspector Yuk July 15, 2010 at 12:05 pm #

    And this one: http://www.etsy.com/shop/estylissimo

It’s amazing that all these are handcrafted!!!!!!!!!

  8. Inspector Yuk July 15, 2010 at 12:12 pm #

That seller with the 4 shops is just disgraceful.

  9. L July 15, 2010 at 12:28 pm #

Zen and Coffee Designs is my shop and yes, I hand-make them all. Would you like to see my house covered in fabric, trim and sewing machines/sergers? I would be oh so happy to supply them.

  10. L July 15, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

In fact, go to http://www.zenandcoffee.deviantart.com and go to my scraps. Those are a few months old as far as my stock goes, but it gives you a small idea.

    Actually here:

I now have 2 sergers and 2 sewing machines and about 15 times the amount of fabric and trim, but yes, I make each pair I sell.

    Now kindly move on.

  11. L July 15, 2010 at 12:31 pm #

At least I know my stuff looks that high quality though! So I suppose…thanks?

  12. itsybitsy July 15, 2010 at 12:40 pm #

L, I think its the nasty tagstuffing in the titles that everyone is rolling their eyes at,

I back out of stores because of that, its annoying, you may as well stand on the corner yelling at people like those ones who hawk t-shirts etc…lol

  13. itsybitsy July 15, 2010 at 12:42 pm #

oh and the tagstuffing in your tags.

  14. L July 15, 2010 at 12:54 pm #

hrm wanna tag all the other tag stuffers out there? Mine are all relevant. I dont tag them as baby legwarmers, hair bows, pot holders or any of that crap. I use relevant tags. Most of the etsy FP’gers use the same method. I was only told that if I use Irrelevant tags was it a nono. I dont try to tag my stuff as its not. Its not against anything to use relevant tags. So go harp somewhere else.

  15. L July 15, 2010 at 1:05 pm #

All I am saying is I dont break rules. I sell stuff I bust my rear over making, work hard to keep my shop fresh with new items weekly, and use relevant tags. Wanna keep hurting handmade? Keep at it.

Thanks for rallying against a true handmade artist who works hard at what she does. Not the resellers and people who tag hair bows as diapers and Americana crap as Steampunk. Much appreciated that I work hard to fill orders quickly, do all my own packaging and shipping with no help, all my own photography etc and there are still people who wanna gripe. I pay for all my supplies out of my own pocket and balance it with a 9-5 job. I lose sleep filling orders and working on my shop. I work HARD. I love what I do, but its not easy. Thanks for all the handmade support. Feels good to know that people love handmade so much.

  16. Kathy July 15, 2010 at 1:14 pm #

Since when is a bracelet a necklace?

  17. Kathy July 15, 2010 at 1:16 pm #

Copied from listing before any editing is done.

jewelry, turquoise, silver, retro, steampunk, beads, charms, primitives, folkart, clothing, art, necklaces, bracelets, buttons

  18. Natalie July 15, 2010 at 1:31 pm #

    @L: Breath! It’s okay!

The titles are a bit much at times, you might want to trim those down a bit even if they are relevant. Other than that I think you have a very nice shop! I definitely believe you that those are handmade. Professional-looking armwarmers aren’t too difficult if you’ve got a serger. I can tell you and estylissimo aren’t the same person too, but you guys sure are strong competition for each other!

I don’t think anyone should report you, but I would like to see you make some more readable titles. I agree with itsybitsy that it can be a bit of a turn-off. If you’ve got a website maybe you can use that to help out with SEO and tagging stuff so you don’t have to fill the etsy item titles so much.

  19. Inspector Yuk July 15, 2010 at 1:41 pm #

You know what L? I humbly apologize for casting aspersions on your handmade shop.

This is a perfect illustration of how resellers harm the handmade community. Who could tell the difference except perhaps someone familiar with the craft?

  20. wahwah July 15, 2010 at 2:01 pm #

You aren’t supposed to stuff more than one word per tag. “goth twilight chic” is not one word.

  21. detroit July 15, 2010 at 2:08 pm #

L – your stuff is cute.

I know you didn’t ask for a critique, but, since we ended up here – I echo the others above. A lot of resellers are very egregious tag stuffers, so the super long titles / tags take away from your shop, and give it a whiff of cheapness.

Maybe you’ve found what works for you. But perhaps if you tried different, more targeted variations, you may have even more success.

    Good luck!

  22. detroit July 15, 2010 at 2:10 pm #

Ya know – less is more. Keep It Simple Stupid – KISS.

More elegant titles would complement your items better. You want to look like a well edited collection, not a carnival barker – right?

  23. imwithya July 15, 2010 at 2:10 pm #

L- while I wouldn’t report your shop for tags since they basically are related to your items, it is against Etsy’s rules to put non related words together as one tag. I think combos like “sterling silver” and “cobalt blue” are acceptable but a string of unrelated words is not.

You might want to fix those because a lot of people do report that as a violation. I personally save my flags for blatant mis-taggers, and of course resellers and faux-vintage hawkers.

  24. wahwah July 15, 2010 at 2:27 pm #

Ya, I would never report anyone for the tag thing. There are too many other things that are way worse that etsy doesn’t do anything about.

  25. wahwah July 15, 2010 at 2:34 pm #

    Garage sale.

  26. uh-huh July 15, 2010 at 2:34 pm #

Huh. Those tags are somethin’ else….. it’s rampant on Etsy even though the TOU say don’t jam dissimilar words in one tag.
But it’s true, tons of FP/featured sellers abuse tags all over their shops.

$50 says I’d get nailed for having listings like that.

  27. boots July 15, 2010 at 3:18 pm #

am i crazy or has the ipod bicycle case been on the FP for like 4 hours in different treasuries?

  28. Inspector Yuk July 15, 2010 at 3:44 pm #

That larysakobzey1’s shop is awful. HOw could anyone take her seriously with sideways pictures and a category called ‘reprodactions’????? I notice none of her 3 sales netted her any feedback either.

She could have very well thrifted this stuff and refinished it, which would be appropriate on Etsy, but she doesn’t give any details as to what she did with them, if anything.

Even if her stuff is Etsy legal, I wouldn’t buy from her because she does look like a garage sale. Everything just looks sloppy with no attention to detail. I don’t mind non-artistic photos, but gosh, at least rotate the photo so the item is upright. And brighten them up, they are so dingy and while you are at it, put some life and personality in your shop, no announcement, descriptions are dryer than a popcorn fart and use spell check.

  29. Inspector Yuk July 15, 2010 at 3:51 pm #

You know, I’m pretty tolerant of tags. I don’t care to see them jam ‘blue, pink, green’ together, but if it applies to the item listed, I’ll overlook it.

But when you tag with things that are unrelated at all like a latchhook stuffed santa tagged with jewelry, beads, steampunk, and gosh knows what else, that pisses me off and I will flag.

  30. detroit July 15, 2010 at 4:08 pm #

I’m planning on opening a store (I know, I know – Etsy has already WAY jumped the shark), and in it, I plan on tagging everything ‘steampunk’, and I will describe everything as ‘handmade with love!’

Any other played out keywords I need for my pet supplies?

  31. tovangogh July 15, 2010 at 4:19 pm #

can we use images from you-know-who and tag them Original Steampunk made by Me

  32. uh-huh July 15, 2010 at 4:21 pm #

    “green” “upcycled” “gift” “twilight”

  33. wahwah July 15, 2010 at 4:52 pm #

    Don’t forget retro and vintage.

  34. wahwah July 15, 2010 at 4:55 pm #

THIS drives me insane. When I saw the same crap at both Marshall’s and Target I almost screamed.

  35. Life During Wartime July 15, 2010 at 5:10 pm #

    For pet supplies, use:
    natural history
    eco friendly

    ….well, you asked!

  36. Life During Wartime July 15, 2010 at 5:13 pm #

I almost barfed when I saw the ‘keep calm’ prints listed on ArtFire as Vintage/Art Deco. No no no no! ArtFire makes Etsy Vintage look fantastic.

  37. RocksInMySocks July 15, 2010 at 5:44 pm #

zenand coffee looks legit to me. Cool stuff and the tags don’t seem near as bad as some I’ve seen. Maybe a little stuffed but I wouldn’t waste my time reporting.

The shops mentioned in the OP are hideous beyond words.

  38. Disgusted July 15, 2010 at 5:48 pm #

Also “organic”, “one of a kind”, “repurposed”, “vintage 90s”, “original”. Don’t forget to post a big ole COPYRIGHT notice for your shop!

  39. detroit July 15, 2010 at 6:12 pm #

THANKS you guys! Actually, my pet items are ‘eco’ and ‘green’ and ‘upcycled’. Maybe I can work a little ‘retro’ in there too. And always ‘gift’.

I’m sure I can tie in Twilight when the time is right!

I need to mark this thread.

I’m still beta testing. One of my cats did shit one one thing I made. But I think it’s cuz I fed her too much of a raw diet out of the blue. And she got too excited by the toy.

Okay – calling out, carry on. Don’t ‘keep calm’ though. That shit makes my blood boil! lol.

  40. wahwah July 15, 2010 at 6:55 pm #

Feed your cat some tinsel and when he craps that out it can be sparkly like a vampire, then you can tag Twilight.

  41. Laura July 16, 2010 at 5:19 am #

    not vintage

  46. JK July 16, 2010 at 10:52 am #

Hey, that’s my friend’s bike! Wahwah, it’s even better in person — if I didn’t fall off bikes (balance issue), I’d be on that beauty in a heartbeat.

  47. wahwah July 16, 2010 at 10:54 am #

I wanted a bike like that so badly as a kid, but being the youngest of six I ended up with whatever bike no one was riding. My kids would be totally mortified, I wish I had the money, lmao!

  48. wahwah July 16, 2010 at 10:55 am #

OMG those A.N.A. shoes!!! Grrrrrrrrrr. Freaking jcpenney’s and soooo not vintage.

  49. JohnCock July 16, 2010 at 11:16 am #

I don’t even know where to start with this one:

  50. bellacruz July 16, 2010 at 11:26 am #

I’m confused about the PrettyPaulaProducts shop.

Mortifying your kids is reason enough alone to get yourself a bike like that! lol.

Vintage bikes are getting pretty popular. If you have some bike shops in your area you might be able to get one for cheaper. Or at least not have to pay the shipping.

Or just steal one from a neighbor kid.

  52. Life During Wartime July 16, 2010 at 11:45 am #

    It looks like PrettyPaula sells:

    -possible handmade by her
    -some vintage items
    -reseller geekery items
-newer collectibles not old enough for vintage
    -reseller jewelry

  53. JohnCock July 16, 2010 at 1:15 pm #

The shop anouncement is good for a laugh too.

  54. wahwah July 16, 2010 at 1:34 pm #

I do not think she understands the concept of etsy. But I do love to chain up my babies.

  55. ScrapMetal July 16, 2010 at 4:16 pm #

On average, how long does it take for a shop to get called out here (and hopefully reported by everyone who reads this blog) until Etsy admins yank it? How many reports/flags does it take for admins to remove a shop? 1, 5, 10, 50, 100? Does anyone know?

  56. Life During Wartime July 16, 2010 at 5:24 pm #

Shops that sell an assortment of items — handmade, vintage, used but too new for vintage, and reseller stuff — are usually left alone to do their thing…like forever.

If a shop sells only reseller stuff AND they are reported and flagged before making more than a handful of sales, they can be gone within a week. Or it can take months for their items to disappear, and even longer for the whole shop to be gone. If they are a successful reseller (lots of sales before being called out and flagged), chances are their items will come and go while Etsy works with them….cough cough…and they are probably on Etsy to stay.

  57. PussDaddy July 17, 2010 at 3:12 am #

Email me rocks and I will send you an invite.

  58. pamela July 17, 2010 at 7:00 am #

why is Etsy admin not closing these shops down? I also work hard to make every piece I sell..if they are antique/vintage, I give the age and tag properly. This is so not fair to us starving artists..we cannot compete with slimy re-sellers!! That is not what Etsy is about!! Does the admin not know this???

  59. wahwah July 17, 2010 at 8:16 am #

Etsy doesn’t want them gone, Pamela. That’s where their bread is buttered, not by out legit handmade/vintage listings.

  60. pamela July 17, 2010 at 11:01 am #

wahwah..OK now THAT truly stinks!! This practice is wrong and hurts the very artists that made Etsy what it today.

Etsy needs to start another site called RESELLERsty and Wholesalersty

We artists should be their bread and butter!! The resources used to promote reseller and wholesalers (I don’t mean artists who make their jewelry for wholesale in this group, cause they are legit) to promote legit, handmade, vintage, antique items. We have a hard enough time as it is….is nothing sacred anymore?

  61. jenjasmine July 18, 2010 at 1:13 am #

    A rustic microscope. Hahahahaha!
    Not rusty, but rustic.

  62. freckleyredhead July 21, 2010 at 1:11 pm #

    Hey y’all . . . . Zhanga’s shop is empty! Her announcement says she’s leaving Etsy.

  63. ebilly July 21, 2010 at 2:35 pm #

She went to AF. Got ask a lot of ? in the forums, then took her items out of handmade and listed them as designer bags.

  64. Andrea July 23, 2010 at 10:25 pm #

I read her thread on Artfire and it seemed people were too afraid to call her what she is, which is a reseller. She did not make those bags and she could not provide enough proof to Etsy so she went to Artfire to complain about Etsy and act innocent. She even claims her website was made by her. Um ok so she’s a master sewer and website designer..okaay.

Funny how when people on Artfire asked her to put up her photos that she “CLAIMS” that she submitted to Etsy for her “PROOF” of innocence she’s now dropping out of the handbag business and won’t put up any of those photos…Wonder why…
Maybe because she’s a liar and will use Artfire for her purposes..hell they deserve her. What a scam artist. I noticed she was leaning her answers by comparing other top designers and stating that they use factories…guess trying to get a thumbs up from people.

  65. eyefortineye July 24, 2010 at 7:38 pm #

As of 8:36p Pacific Time, she’s listed her bags. In 3 places on a single page, she directs viewers to visit her website.
