Reader Email- johnnyhzheng, unclestan

20 Jul

Lots of interesting emails coming in lately. Will try to post them all. Here is one:
While perusing a reseller thread on the forums, I clicked on the profile for Etsy member WIAPilot just out of curiosity.  I’ve seen her involved in some nasty forum disputes over bad feedback, etc. and I was mainly curious about what she’d purchased lately.  Her feedback is a good read on it’s own.
Here’s the thread where she posted:
What a surprise to see she purchased 10 items from this shitty reseller although I’m sure she knew exactly what she was doing.
This ass tags all of his reseller crap as supplies when they’re clearly not.  His photos are really strange.  If you zoom in on some of them, you can see some writing that says someone used to live in a one room house with their family.  WTH is this shit?  I’ve tried to find the photos with tineye but have had no luck.  It’s obvious this guy isn’t making these items.
This is what Etsy has come to.  Sellers that cheat and lie and bitchy buyers who don’t give a shit what kind of crap they buy on a handmade site, as long as it’s cheap.
——————————————————————————————————————————————-
I think this store that was shut down http://www.etsy.com/transaction/23916941 is actually now http://www.etsy.com/shop/Unclestan, that was just on the FP. It’s a gift shop in Singapore.

    Come on! johnnyjzheng isn’t a reseller, he makes everything himself with some help from his granny.

    Tut tut

  2. Life During Wartime July 20, 2010 at 2:50 pm #

    I find his shop name ‘good girls go bad’ and the ‘granny handmade’ titles offensive used with the type of items he’s selling. It’s not relevant marketing for his inventory. There are shops and items for which these phrases would be catchy, humorous and relevant…just to make it clear I am not being politically correct. Now I am waiting for one of the Chinese junque shops to open with a name like ‘shut up and take off your clothes bitches’. A sure bet for Etsy Finds!

  3. PussDaddy July 20, 2010 at 2:50 pm #

    Rut-roh.

    Which item has the writing on the pic by the way if you remember so we don’t have to look at all his crap? Thanks.

  4. JohnCock July 20, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

    I have wondered about WIA for a while.

  5. sick of cupcakes July 20, 2010 at 3:09 pm #

    How does someone get 80 negs just being a buyer?

  6. sparkalicious July 20, 2010 at 3:15 pm #

    I couldn’t resist checking out the negs – all from ONE seller. Apparently a huge multi-item “purchase” that was never paid for – ALL kitchen towels and potholders! See pp. 67-71 of her feedback.

    WIA must have a flea market stall somewhere….or a restaurant.

  7. linda July 20, 2010 at 3:16 pm #

    She leaves some nasty feedback too.

  8. PussDaddy July 20, 2010 at 3:17 pm #

    Damn, that is a lot of negs for buying, lol.

  9. sparkalicious July 20, 2010 at 3:20 pm #

    Sounds like she’s bipolar and has more time and money than good sense.

    I knew that angel “kewpie” looked familiar: It’s a Sonny Angel Parakeet! These are super cute dolls, but not handmade.

  11. PussDaddy July 20, 2010 at 3:26 pm #

    Damn, it’s like the buyer from hell, lol.

  12. PussDaddy July 20, 2010 at 3:33 pm #

    She bought from here. What is handmade about this stuff?

    Just wanted to point out a thread started by admin concerning the reseller issue. My favorite admin quote:

    http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6579548&page=8

    “We don’t know of any long term resellers. I think the confusion might be happening because sellers are allowed to have employees. “

  15. Cat Power July 20, 2010 at 3:46 pm #

    HeyMichelle
    I haven’t read this thread yet, but was just over in the forum reading an earlier thread posted initially by Rob White. This quote from HeyMichelle, just about blew my mind! Talk about lying through their teeth, or just being too dense to suss out the truth….I rather think it is the former!

    I am fuming !!! Sorry for the many !!! but you’re lucky I didn’t post in caps…lol.

    Etsy Admin
    HeyMichelle says:
    Hi everyone,

    Rob is stepping away for a bit, so anee and I are going to fill in for a little while. Re: this question:

    “How do you guys handle resellers who have been here for a very long time, the ones Etsy has already profited from immensely?”

    – We don’t know of any long term resellers. I think the confusion might be happening because sellers are allowed to have employees.

  16. Cat Power July 20, 2010 at 3:48 pm #

    Well I guess great minds do think alike! We both posted at the same exact time, about the same exact comment….too weird!

  18. sparkalicious July 20, 2010 at 3:51 pm #

    Oops.
    I think somebody needs to get really close to HeyMichelle and shout “HEYMICHELLE! WAKE UP!”

  19. Life During Wartime July 20, 2010 at 4:00 pm #

    Yo, DitzySoldierSailorHeyMichelle — what do you call Indiepixie’s Cupcake Kisses if not a reseller? Just because you admins coached her into ‘compliance’ doesn’t mean she’s not a reseller. So you told her to take the dresses out of the packages so she could photograph them at home…you think we are all to stoopid to look at her sold items?

    And still for sale in her shop, with a false description of being designed and made by her.

    HeyMichelle’s underoos are burning.

  20. sick of cupcakes July 20, 2010 at 4:03 pm #

    Oh yes, she must be referring to the sellers who have 500 underpaid employees living overseas in Taiwan.

  21. damn July 20, 2010 at 4:06 pm #

    damn is that wiapilot chick a millionaire????????

  22. Life During Wartime July 20, 2010 at 4:07 pm #

    And what about the shops that are reselling stuff from dollar stores as handmade? Isn’t that reselling? Or are the employees and suppliers of the dollar store considered employees of the Etsy shop?

    Even if Etsy comes out with a statement allowing manufacturers to have shops, there is still a buttload of reselling happening on Etsy.

    I mean, what about the bridal jewelry resellers and rainbow collections of crocheted unembellished headbands, for a start?

  23. sick of cupcakes July 20, 2010 at 4:08 pm #

    So did Rob have some sort of hipster breakdown or something?

  24. Akhenaten July 20, 2010 at 4:30 pm #

    Cat, I guess we were on the same wavelength! hahahaha!

    That thread is getting pretty disturbing. HeyMichelle keeps misinterpreting almost every aspect of the whole deal. Very discouraging.

  25. JK July 20, 2010 at 4:41 pm #

    Oh, WIA — she’s always struck me as unhinged and needing a new hobby besides being obsessed with feedback.

    Well after reading the negative, I would say it’s deserved. The seller wrapped her pinata in newspaper, which came off on the pinata. Buyer notified seller and seller never responded.

    You don’t think seller deserves a negative?

    I guess I’m in the minority because I like WIA. She runs her own company (an aviation company I think) and buys a lot of gifts. I think the bad feedback she has given is valid.

    I really don’t think she is bitter. She just expects good customer service and isn’t afraid to speak her mind when she doesn’t get it.

  32. Voice July 20, 2010 at 7:46 pm #

    Wow, it’s a new record — four Admin in the same thread, all pissing on sellers and telling them it’s raining.

  33. sick of cupcakes July 20, 2010 at 7:55 pm #

    Kitten, it just seems to me that she has a disproportionate amount of bad transactions. What about those numerous potholders she didn’t pay for? I have over 2000 feedbacks on ebay and have never once had to leave a neg or receive one.

  34. Cat Power July 20, 2010 at 7:57 pm #

    I’m only on page 16 of the thread where the Admins (sic) are piping in and I wrote this comment, then thought better of it. But I think it should be seen by someone. So please bear with me, as I’m cutting and pasting it here. This is after Annu or whoever, maybe HeyMichelle posted…..

    “I’m just on page 16 of this Opus, but have to respond to HeyMichele, or I’ll burst at the seams.

    “A case-by-case basis” is fine if you only have a handful of possible suspects..but there are over, what? 200,000 sellers here now? Don’t you think that technique is a bit outdated and non functional, at this point?

    People send you info and links every day…all you have to do is check the blasted things, use some common sense, and wow, the question is answered…”Yes, they are selling items purchased from a wholesale site, not of their own making”.

    I’m really beginning to think you guys just fell off the turnip truck. The naivety of believing everything you are told with utter disregard for glaring facts/data/examples/photographs, has me shaking my head and wondering how in hell you will ever live past 30!

    I hate to burst your shiny little bubbles but not everyone tells the truth, nor do they play by the “so called rules”, and the sooner you face up to the fact and stop simply collecting a pay check to give us platitudes and half a$$ed answers, the better you, we and the site will become.”

    Now I’ll go back and delete my unposted post which would have shown up on about page 51.

    Am looking through the clothing category to see what photos draw me in (for photo help/inspiration), and besides screenprinted tees, everything is either vintage or reseller, with maybe 1/5 of things actually handmade. craziness.

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/nayacos

  36. Life During Wartime July 20, 2010 at 8:29 pm #

    While the discussion was going on fast and furious, according to CraftCult a reseller was at least an alternate, possibly made it to the FP. Not the item that was in the treasury, but I found one item in her shop quickly that is described as being made by the villagers yadda yadda yadda.

    But…there are no resellers on Etsy, only shop owners who have employees. Head. Desk. Ow!

    When a seller describes in detail how someone else has made their item, it should be a simple matter of Etsy blowing that item out of the water. Take the words of these resellers at face value, delete their item (but store it in a special database for future reference) and keep their goddam 20 cents.

    Take the new handmade pledge: Bald-faced blatant resellers will have their items removed. Until morale on Etsy improves, and forever after.

  37. Life During Wartime July 20, 2010 at 8:58 pm #

    I forgot the link to the item in question, listed in a handmade category:

    Description is copied and pasted from wikipedia.

    This one needs coaching, Etsy.

  39. Blue Kitty July 21, 2010 at 1:31 am #

    I marked that Admin reseller thread last night to read today but I now don’t think I dare read it because I might have an adverse reaction to it.

    What is the point of having a discussion like that where nobody is allowed to post any examples to prove their points due to the calling out rule?

    Admin says there are no long term resellers.

    Nobody can give a shop as an example plus proof what they have for sale wasn’t made by them because instant trouble for the poster.

    Admin could state that black is white and nobody could offer proof otherwise. Pointless discussion.

    It makes me want to cry when I see resellers who have hundreds of sales in a very short amount of time, while I only have 20 something in one shop and less than 10 in another. And I make all my items by hand, in my spare time – which there isn’t much of these days.

    Yep, call me a jealous hater.

  46. sick of cupcakes July 21, 2010 at 7:20 am #

    I hear you Freckley. I haven’t listed in a month, my heart just isn’t in it.

  47. JohnCock July 21, 2010 at 8:05 am #

    I haven’t been listing much either. Resellers have sucked some of the joy from it. Etsy’s lack of response has sucked the rest.

  48. Laura July 21, 2010 at 8:22 am #

    Has this reseller been called out before: http://www.etsy.com/shop/Leginayba?ref=seller_info

    Almost 300 sales with a feedback of 3? Please, homie isn’t making wooden sticks for $3 no matter how many times they say, “handmade.”

  49. groove is in da heart July 21, 2010 at 8:53 am #

    So do knowledgable Etsians buy from resellers and ask them not to leave feedback so no one will know? Or are the shops buying from themselves to bump up their sales?

  50. uh-huh July 21, 2010 at 9:20 am #

    #43, I know they’ve been flagged w/ links to their ebay listings attached and something else I think but I don’t remember what that was…

  51. Life During Wartime July 21, 2010 at 9:27 am #

    Groove, I think people who have craft/flea market booths, boutiques, and every kind of small retail in between, shop Etsy resellers. If your business is a close-2-the-bottom feeder, then you won’t be spending the extra money to buy authentic handmade by the seller items. You want the stuff sold cheap that was made by kids in the developing world. They may request that the seller not give or expect to receive feedback so the transaction is close to anonymous. They don’t want their competitors to track their cheap sources on Etsy, and don’t give a poop about their standing in the Etsy community. They were never here, no one saw a thing.

  52. etsy hate July 21, 2010 at 9:47 am #

    What are your opinions on this shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/raghousenternational

    They are located in USA, California, Los Angeles, Europe, New York, Istanbul, Finland, Worldwide. All at the same time, really?

    Their $31 knit dress was just featured in the Finds. Of course. I’ve seen it on the front page, too.

    Reseller?

  53. Life During Wartime July 21, 2010 at 10:03 am #

    It’s not that cheap elsewhere. Like here:

    http://www.blujay.com/?page=profile&profile_username=RaghouseInternational

    Even the blujay price is way low for a hand knit sweater dress for an adult.

    She may not be a reseller, but I bet she has ’employees’. And she must pay them a living wage, with full benefits, going by her prices…NOT!

    I saw it in the Finds and wished I could hurl thru my laptop right into the Etsy phone booth.

  56. deej July 21, 2010 at 11:36 am #

    Raghouse stood out to me on the FP earlier too. She has all those dresses in stock in all those colors AND all those sizes for $31??

  57. Life During Wartime July 21, 2010 at 12:19 pm #

    How can she afford to sell a dress she made for 31 bucks?

    Are the dresses actually HAND knitted? I don’t knit so I am clueless. I thought there were machines that could make the pattern pieces, at least?

  58. detroit July 21, 2010 at 1:22 pm #

    I would think they knit a big piece on a knitting machine, and then stitch it together.

    I agree, they’re cute. But not a fan of acrylic.

  59. PussDaddy July 21, 2010 at 2:54 pm #

    In reference to #27, who needs that many potholders?

  60. toastycrackers July 21, 2010 at 3:56 pm #

    After one of WIA’s forum posts, I was curious about her feedback issues and couldn’t help but read through all the negatives.

    She left lengthy, tacky negative feedback for some sellers that were their only negatives, and some for brand new sellers. One had their feedback scores go to around 27% over her being picky. And since she usually orders multiple items, this really sucked for those sellers.

    A lot of it seemed to be stuff anyone without a nasty vengeful streak would have just left alone.

  61. PussDaddy July 21, 2010 at 4:29 pm #

    I only gave one neg on Etsy and that was after I exhausted every other alternative.

  62. RocksInMySocks July 21, 2010 at 5:23 pm #

    Just found this post from WIAPilot in thread

    http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6510507&page=2

    WIAPilot says:
    My favorite is when I purchased unknowingly from a Reseller. When the product arrived, it was obviously mass produced in Hong Kong. I looked at his Profile Page and he states that he sells many items that his “Uncle” makes in Hong Kong. Yeah, right.

    I’m not sure if the seller she’s referring to is the same one mentioned here but, knowing how willing she is to complain about all her purchases, I’m surprised she didn’t leave negatives for him if she was bothered by the reselling.

  63. justsayit July 21, 2010 at 8:19 pm #

    I agree with kitten. The transaction between WIA and the seller who left her 3 pages of negative feedback went way wrong. The story of WIA being a non-paying buyer is not complete. I’ve read everything I could find on the subject and decided the seller is an incompetant whiney a$$hole. To begin with, what seller leaves three pages of feedback? Who would deal with someone who does business that way?

    A group of haters continually “stalk post” WIA to warn readers how horrible a buyer she is. I don’t think much of them either.

    She leaves excellent feedback to those who sell what they say they say they are selling and states her mind when she doesn’t get what she paid for. Isn’t that what feedback is for? Not all sellers are angels. Some are pretty crappy.

    A pinata stained with newspriint and a non-responsive seller would piss me off too. A mouse chewed book would also.

    I once was among a staff of about 75 who were all given potholders as a Christmas gift from a manager. It happens and is not that unusual. WIA may be using Etsy instead of the usual companies that offer gift items in bulk.

    Re: the admin reseller debate. I was in chat with Matt earlier and as soon as resellers was mentioned he started talking about number of employees – just like Michelle. This seems to be their standard excuse. I can’t figure it out because to me whilst the issues are connected they are different.
    Problem 1: Resellers who have no involvement in the product they sell
    Problem 2: Sellers who have employees but have designed/partially made their items.
    From what Matt said it sounds like there is likely to be some change to the TOUs in relaiton to problem 2.
    In relation to problem 1 personally, I think they are in total denial.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Clearly she does read and expects to get what she pays for. She may be more vocal than others. If you are deceptive in your selling practices, then you certainly will not want to sell to her. If you are honest, there should not be a problem.
    Most sellers will not be hurt by a negative. What does hurt them is the way they respond to.
    WIA has over 1700 purchases and is happy with most of those. She left for a few descriptive negative feedbacks, usually about items not as described, which in fact they were not.
    Professional sellers of glass describe chips. General disclaimers are not an acceptable practice for HONEST sellers. The peanut can elephant was not pictured with scratches. The candles were not delivered. Book sellers can sell books in any condition, but vermin (mouse chewed) is not acceptable in the industry and the item was not described as chewed.
    WIA did not leave negative feedback for the person who left over 70 negs for a cancelled order. What an idiot that seller is. At the time of that large order, WIA had over 20 pages of positive feedback including many fast payments. The seller should have figured something was wrong, moved on and left the door open. To leave that many negs is spiteful. It is there for the world to see and surely has cost her some sales.
  68. ohmeohmy July 24, 2010 at 11:12 am #
    justsayit,
    I suspect you are wia.
    The seller who left all those negs had every right too. You ordered almost everything in her shop.
    I remember you mentioneing several times on the forum that you did not pay that seller because someone in your family went to the hospital or something like that.
    It was still your responsiblity to either notify the seller that your payment would be late, or just cancel the entire transaction.
    Other sellers have gotten the same deal with you, ordering many things and then complaining and not buying.
    A seller’s rep is so important. Negatives can kill a new seller. But you don’t seem to care.
    I most definitely would cancel any sales from you, as it my right. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would want your business.
  69. tippy July 24, 2010 at 6:43 pm #
    If you read all of WIAPilot’s negative comments, she admits that she refuses to return the items and still demands a FULL refund and then when the seller does not comply with her outrageous demands, she leaves negative feedback.
    Her excuse for not returning items, she didn’t feel like driving to the post office and waiting in line. Sometimes she admits that she will give the items in question as gifts but wants a replacement/full refund.
    I don’t think she’s getting damaged goods, I think she’s a scam artist. She knows sellers rely on their feedback for sales and holds that for ransom.
    Well, scammer aka WIAPilot, you can’t get something for nothing. I hope you don’t buy from me.
  70. justsayit July 25, 2010 at 8:19 am #
    ROTFLOL!!!!!!!
    I am not WIA.
    What is so to understand about a buyer taking action when they don’t get what they pay for?
    Her buying history proves she is not a scammer.
    Keep looking for the boogy man. It’ll take your mind off your lack of success.
    The problem is that she chooses NOT to return the goods, yet still insists upon refunds.
    That is called theft. That is fraud. That is a scam. That is attempted blackmail.
    It’s suspicious to demand a refund without allowing the seller to receive the goods back first. It’s fraud when this is done on a regular basis and it’s apparent from that feedback that it’s her MO.
    That buyer tries to bulldoze those sellers and it actually of reeks of extortion because she banks on the fact that some sellers will roll over in order to avoid a negative.
    Bravo to all sellers who refuse to refund payment without receiving the merchandise first!!
    Don’t be intimidated, don’t be bullied. Forward all such communications directly to Etsy.
    What feedback are you reading to get that idea? I see no attempted fraud. The only bullying going on is against WIA by petty minded, uniformed wannabe business people.
    Don’t refuse a refund until you have checked the law. In some cases the item does not have to be returned for a refund.
    Interesting, but not applicable.
  75. tippy July 27, 2010 at 2:44 pm #
    How is it not applicable? It’s from your state’s Attorney General.
    A store has to give you a refund if you request one.
    FACT: Most states do not have laws specifically regulating refund or return policies. Businesses may set their own return policy. They can offer consumers cash, credit slips, exchanges or NO ADJUSTMENT AT ALL. Many stores also set time limits during which they accept returns.
    Not my state. Not applicable. Fed laws are though. Check them out.
    WIA has let it slip that she is a reseller. She is reselling the stuff she buys, that’s why she throws a fit if anyone labels or marks their stuff with their shop name. She thinks she is above everyone else because she buys so many thing, she’s pretentious and very narcissistic. She bullies buyers in the forum all the time.
  78. Yup August 11, 2010 at 10:46 am #
    Sellers definitely talk to each other behind the scenes. You may think there is a small percentage that doesn’t care for you WIA but it is much more far reaching. Did you notice that Admin shuts down almost everyone of your threads because you almost always go ballistic when someone doesn’t agree with you? I see you constantly saying how you are trying to get sellers kicked off the forums but I think you’ll be surprised to find yourself muted one day. ONE overly opinionated buyer does not make etsy money,MANY sellers do.
    Hello! I guess I can clear up a few concerns about my shop Raghouse International. I am not a reseller. All items in my shop are handmade by me. As far as the dress, it is completely handmade. It is one dress, not different dresses. It’s the same exact photo except I did color replacement in adobe photo shop, purchased the yarn that I wanted to make available in my shop and took photos of it. I am a professional photographer of 9 years and simply had a winning photo that I and everyone else loved and was great for treasuries. Instead of making a color chart and using it as my 5th photo I wanted to make every color a separate listing so that people making treasuries would have more options. These dresses have been on sale at $31 since April because it was my birthday celebration sale and that’s how old I turned. It was a success so I decided to extend the sale throughout the summer. The price that you see on Blujay is the real price for the dresses. Sales are not made on blujay. That is just for SEO. And no you really can’t make the dress and sale it for $31. My summer sale, believe me, has not been that profitable. I did it because sales are usually lower in the summer and because my buyers are so happy when they receive my items. I don’t have any employees. I currently live in California but have lived in other places. I am part of a California Etsy team and Mediterranean Team as well. That’s where I keep up with my friends and other shops in Europe. I have cleared everything up with Etsy Admin and my shop is back in running order. Thanks for reading!
    I’m trying to post this anywhere possible…
    2-3 months ago, I purchased two pairs of earrings from the artist LEGINAYBA through Etsy for $15. When they hadnt come after 6 weeks, I asked them about the status. over a week later, they emailed me back saying that even though I had already paid for the earrings, they gave them to someone else. After contacting them multiple more times, they finally said I could choose replacement pairs from the site (again, since I had already paid 15 dollars and received nothing). After choosing the two new pairs costing under $15, a week later I receive an email saying:
    “we just sent a full refund of us$14.96 back to your paypal account
    your request is totally impossible
    how are going to get 2 pairs of earrings for that price
    you can even get 1/4 of earrings specially for such high quality like ours
    so good luck in finding jewelry like that specially for that 0.99 cents items somewhere else”
    First of all…RUDE! Secondly, they said this last statament because one of the original pairs I purchased and didnt get, THEY had on sale for 99 cents, which of course was the basis of its appeal.
    so, in the end, they wouldnt even send me replacement products for the ones they failed to send me.
    I advise anyone and everyone: DO NOT BUY FROM LEGINAYBA!!!!
