I’ve been complaining for years about the items listed in handmade categories that don’t even belong on Etsy. I’ve tried reporting items and/or shops, but nothing happens. These are Ebayers who have landed on Etsy because of the lower fees. As long as these shops pay their bills and list merchandise for the female shopper, they are safe.

Changing the listing process to force a selection of Handmade, Supplies, or Vintage wouldn’t help. The only thing that might do is shift the carp to Vintage, where it doesn’t belong either.

  2. JohnCock August 23, 2010 at 1:17 pm #

ROFL Yeah, I am going to spend $30K on a ring from an etsy seller with no feedback, no profile, no policies.

I think it’s funny that this seller
has 100 qty of almost all of their earrings – plus, let’s not forget they’ve got 10 BABY MONITORS listed – seriously? I’ve flagged to no avail…
    baby monitors!

The photography on that third one is just stunning.

Notice how he only takes check or money orders?? Yea so you can’t go after when he takes your money. lol

  7. losinghope August 23, 2010 at 5:04 pm #

The 100 pair of earrings shop only accepts checks! Why would anyone write a check for this crap and send it to China?? Your routing number and chking a/c number would be all over Asia. Etsy…get these sellers off this site, please!

  8. Max August 23, 2010 at 5:10 pm #

this is about the last straw for me, along with #4 jeweljewel’s post. etsy is seriously fucked. i feel bad for those of you who feel the need to try to sell there. just pay godaddy $10 and get the hell out of there before your reputations are ruined for good.

  9. Life During Wartime August 23, 2010 at 5:14 pm #

genuinepearl has been on Etsy for more than 3 months, and the content people never found ‘diamonds’ and ‘pearls’ listed for 20 cents!?!

Crafing expertise or special knowledge of vintage is not required to realize these shops should be closed. Etsy needs to take responsibility for finding and closing obvious scammers and resellers.

  10. Sydney August 23, 2010 at 5:19 pm #

    “genuinepearl’s Shop Policies

Anyone need anything from the drugstore? Here ya go!

  12. WindyR August 23, 2010 at 6:54 pm #

I am surprised that they are allowed to go on based on the fact that they charge 20 cents for earrings but then charge 6 to 12 dollars for shipping – isn’t that fee avoidance, a big no no on etsy? Reseller issue aside, I would think that etsy would make them clean up shop on that issue alone. The situation is very sad.

  13. Life During Wartime August 23, 2010 at 7:23 pm #

dollar…dollar…dollar…do I hear a dollar? Seriously, WTF are those skin treatments doing on Etsy? Don’t the mustache-wearing geeks who work for Etsy know they could write code to search for “auction” and “bid”? Find and close these shops without waiting for us to flag them?

  14. sick of cupcakes August 23, 2010 at 7:24 pm #

Etsy is a giant turd, and I am flushing it down the toilet.

  15. Disgusted August 23, 2010 at 7:53 pm #

Just when you think it can’t get any worse – it does.

Pearls for 20 cents (100 available), baby monitors.

Its going to be interesting to see how many hours it takes to decide they aren’t legitimate.

  21. JohnCock August 24, 2010 at 3:10 am #

OK, lets see how long it takes to remove this one:

  22. willowandme August 24, 2010 at 3:45 am #

Yeah, I am going to spend that much on a diamond ring on etsy. Especially from a seller with no profile, etc.

  23. gonefrometsy August 24, 2010 at 3:58 am #

I closed my shop last week. I can’t tell you how relieved I am to NOT be associated with this shit anymore. I left a buyer’s account open to make supply purchases and to flag. I’m just sitting around waiting for the Titanic that is Etsy to finally finish sinking into the Ebay ocean.

  24. Iona August 24, 2010 at 5:05 am #

Love the diamond ring. $30,000 but the wood box isn’t included.

The way it is going sellers like these are all Etsy is going to have I wonder how delighted the big Etsy bosses are going to be when they end up just a selling site like loads of other selling sites. The people who are looking for hand made won’t even bother looking there any more so at the end of the day the losers are Etsy themselves.

Can’t wait for that day given how the attitude at the moment seems to be that they can do no wrong and their selling site will go from strength to strength with all the crap sellers.

Good luck to them. You always gotta be nice to people on the way up because you meet them again on the way down.

  25. ScrapMetal August 24, 2010 at 5:08 am #

Unreal. I am going to check back on these shops later today to see if they are still up. I hope everyone flags them!!

  26. boots August 24, 2010 at 5:26 am #

omg how the fuck is someone selling prescription drugs on etsy?! illegal hello? this and the penis are really making me feel etsy is done

  27. Disgusted August 24, 2010 at 5:34 am #

So much for a site that made artists of all kinds feel welcome and promoted creativity. I can’t say Artfire is the be all and end all but they sure take copyright violations, stolen pictures and other things more seriously than Etsy.

  28. Wolf August 24, 2010 at 7:23 am #

Wow. The resellers aren’t even bothering to try to disguise themselves anymore.

    Etsy – FUCK YOU!

  30. stinkypants August 24, 2010 at 9:11 am #

$100 dollars worth of lotions and potions for half the price at $20. With math skills like that, I am betting that the one item that is slightly used is actually all gone except for the fumes left in the container.

  31. stinkypants August 24, 2010 at 9:22 am #

Aw, the wood box is not included. For 30,000 dollars, they won’t include the thing that looks like an outhouse for hamsters. Damn.

  32. Blue Kitty August 24, 2010 at 9:28 am #

The Etsy dream that so many are (or were) buying into.

Not surprising that some artists say when galleries find they sell on Etsy they will not touch their work.

Listings from Chinese cheap forgery purveyors that state quite openly (until coached?)

I just can’t take it! This shop is still here even though Etsy has PROOF of her reselling. And I just read her feedback and these poor people are saying what beautiful, “expertly crafted” her things are! Has anyone ever written to people that unknowingly bought this stuff to tell them they could have bought it for MUCH cheaper and it is NOT handmade? I’m dying to do it.

  34. eyefortineye August 24, 2010 at 10:56 am # ROCKS!
heh heh…last time I called, then emailed, the offender was GONE within hours!

soooo, I googled but didn’t go there. So interesting….

LOL, I did, I did! I won’t say for which dirtbag seller, but the buyer wrote me back thanking me and telling me she was going to write the seller to give her what for, and later that day the seller’s entire shop was gone! WhooHoooooo!

    I wrote to Tiffany:
Hello, are these really Tiffany’s? for $10 on Etsy?
    I don’t think so, LOL!
Please, can you get this seller shut down for selling fakes? If you google their website: it flat out states that they sell knock-offs!

    Thanks so much!!

i have this exact ring, that i bought in a shop 4 years ago

  39. Life During Wartime August 24, 2010 at 11:59 am #

Technical difficulties? I think she means the little blip while she and the Etsy staff work out their honor-among-thieves agreement. What a load of bs!

  40. um no August 24, 2010 at 1:14 pm #

HA! That or the rings were on backorder from Aunties Beads! What a load of crap.

  41. Inspector Yuk August 24, 2010 at 1:17 pm #

You have to be very careful contacting buyers. I did that, and while everyone was appreciative, I believe that one of them unwittingly must have forwarded a copy of my convo to the seller because not long after I got an official warning from Etsy not to interfere again or I would be booted.

Last I checked, the shop is still up and running so they don’t always close the shop or even remove the offending listing.

It’s frustrating watching people be duped into thinking they are buying true handmade or vintage, or even thinking they are getting a good deal on something they probably know isn’t. Is anyone really that stupid to think that a lot of this stuff on ECO is really handmade?

Like those wedding dresses. Common sense tells me they aren’t handmade, but a gal shopping for a wedding dress and seeing $1500 dresses in bridal shops is going to think the $500 designer-look gown is a bargain on Etsy, handmade or not.

Maybe sellers like this serve a purpose, they do save buyers having to search the internet. BUT, I despise the tactic of implying or outright lying that the product is handmade by the seller. Sometimes I wonder if it wouldn’t be better if Etsy was just going to openly allow resellers, and that those that are reselling would just state that. I don’t have a problem buying factory made items, as long as I have the choice.

  42. damn August 24, 2010 at 2:01 pm #

etsy is getting worse and worse…rob kalin has his backup plan though – curated….good ole randy. *wink*

  43. Life During Wartime August 24, 2010 at 3:08 pm #

It looks to me like the number of resellers (and they are selling fakes as vintage now, it’s not just handmade items) in features has risen from last year. That’s almost the same as openly allowing resellers.

The fake Sottero wedding dresses and fake antiques are, in my opinion, a whole new level of deceptive selling. Far worse than original, but factory sewn, wedding gowns or items too new to be vintage openly listed as 1990s.

  44. JohnCock August 24, 2010 at 3:41 pm #

I would have to agree life. That is why I think the authorities should be notified. There are other laws this person would be violating but I won’t be any more specific as I know she is reading this.

  45. detroit August 24, 2010 at 8:39 pm #

Sorry, has blinkphoto been called out before here? I saw them called out elsewhere:

    junque. Pure and simple….

this is a cleaning out of someone’s closet.

  47. Call Out Grrl August 24, 2010 at 10:43 pm #

That’s right! Twiggarden aka Elvendale aka Glenamara aka Wicopy aka Threedollarearrings aka Greengages aka Beadwitches aka Fairythimble aka Lindengate aka Saffron (on Artfire) is now back as GardenofSecrets!

Twiggarden was called out several weeks ago and I noticed the shop disappeared recently. Just in time for her to open up a new shop:

And yep, all those EXACT earrings that were once $3 (when she was threedollarearrings) are now $14, $15, or $16! I guess the cost of “vintage” components has gone up, huh?

And, as usual, she’s somehow managed 70 sales in, what, 17 days. Must just be beginner’s luck (for at least the tenth time).

Anyone wanna place bets on how long it’ll take before the negs (and associated retaliatory negs) come pouring in and this shop disappears just like the other ones?

  48. jenjasmine August 25, 2010 at 12:06 am #

    This shop has me confused.

Reproduced vintage boxes in the Vintage section, but just reproductions?

  49. Life During Wartime August 25, 2010 at 12:41 am #

I think this is the same person as boxboys:

The listings appear to be written by the same person.

  50. losinghope August 25, 2010 at 3:35 am #

Boxboy & Creative Pal’s items are really cool but they are not vintage as he has them tagged. They’re handmade from what I can see in the listings.Wonder how he makes them and if he got permission from the companies?

  51. jenn August 25, 2010 at 4:10 am #

I tried searching for a skirt on etsy yesterday and gave up after an hour of wading through all of the reseller shops (that have been called out here and not touched by etsy).

Sorry, skirt makers. I really wanted to buy, but your reseller competition turned me away.

Way to go etsy. Not only are you allowing the resellers to stay, you’re hurting true craftspeople.

  52. Sydney August 25, 2010 at 9:20 am #

Found this while stumbling through the big E..

Funny, my college has this SAME picture in the Advising Office. So I did a Tineye search, and well, theres 1209 of these floating around the internet.

  53. Life During Wartime August 25, 2010 at 10:34 am #

losinghope, I reported CreativePal over 6 months ago for abuse of the vintage category. Etsy loves this seller and his two undisclosed shops.

How does he make his items? Someone copies the original box graphics (age flaws and all) and prints them, attaches them to custom made boxes. Adds accessories like oil paint tubs (for the paint by number kits) etc etc. He might make the collage lamp shades, but my feeling is the toy boxes and paint kits are made in factories in Asia.

About permissions…who really thinks that whoever owns the rights to the Beatles, the Monkees, and Hillary Duff’s images ‘gave’ this person permission? Who thinks he is paying for permission? Who thinks some Chinese factory is churning this stuff out, sans permission and fees to the owners?

  54. stinkypants August 25, 2010 at 12:06 pm #

That World Peace print and the rest of their ” handmade ” things can be paid off using a layaway plan. Layaway for $5 prints. OK.

  55. LoveandRage August 25, 2010 at 3:11 pm #

    What the hell?

  56. Em August 25, 2010 at 4:20 pm #

lol, the world peace print is printed on ‘HP paper’… so this person basically prints someone else’s image off her home printer on some glossy paper and sticks it in a mailer. What an entrepreneur!
