Reading RuzDiamond’s profile, this saying comes to mind – If you can’t dazzle them with questionable diamonds, baffle them with bullshit.

Here is the website for Ruz Empire.

    http://www.ruz-diamond.com/Default.asp

Click on the link to their Ebay listings and see the barcoded tags on some of the pieces. This is not a small family owned jeweler. The rings are made in many multiples. Their site plainly states they are a wholesaler of diamonds and gold, and they create (I guess design?) and MANUFACTURE diamond jewelry. Sure the people who make the pieces are skilled artisans. What does a fine jewelry factory have to do with Etsy?

  3. damn September 5, 2010 at 5:13 pm #

“NOT ALL, OF IT NEEDS CLEANING AND HAS SOME WEAR. PLEASE NOTE…”SOME” OF THIS JEWELRY IS NOT IN PERFECT CONDITION.”

Why don’t the idiots just call it “vintage”…like all the other “vintage” sellers do.

  4. Life During Wartime September 5, 2010 at 5:26 pm #

This guy is such a reputable businessperson he can’t even be bothered to edit out references to ‘bidding’ in his listings. One item even has a photo with the Ebay camera watermark. He took the time to write all that nonsense in his profile, though.

    3 FOR 15 BUCKS , not dollars. That’s KLASS!

  6. Life During Wartime September 5, 2010 at 7:13 pm #

A buck is a male deer, right? So it’s totally Etsy.

  7. Disgusted September 6, 2010 at 5:56 am #

Then we have todays Finds. A seller of badly damaged glassware cannot figure out that the “McK” on the bottom is McKee. Again we see the new, not vintage, metal bird hook. And if I have to see Christine wearing the birth control glasses any more I will heave.

VIntage sellers who know nothing piss me off as much as resellers. They are the reason the vintage category looks like a yard sale. How is it possible that a vintage seller doesn’t know that “McK” is McKee? How stupid and lazy can someone possibly be? If you google McK bowl you get a thousand listings telling you it is McKee. Aaarghh.

This shop sells bangles purchased in India…they go for real cheap there, about 20 rupees a set which is 0.429923 USD!! They are not handmade by her! Grrrrr

No where does she state they are handmade by her. Those things are soooooo difficult to make without the proper tools. Buyers beware!

  15. Jean September 6, 2010 at 10:56 am #

oops…forgot to also mention this shop:

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/ExoticBangles

why are these resellers allowed on Etsy??

  16. Life During Wartime September 6, 2010 at 11:26 am #

Is jewelry made in the slum shack factories of India welcome on Etsy? You betcha! They are ‘co-operatives’. HeyMichelle would never close that shop because then she would be depriving the needy children of a way to earn a living. Ah, the white chick’s burden of working for Etsy, such a heartbreak…

And thanks to the generous — but empty-headed — members of the Etsy community, exoticbangles is in 50 Treasuries right now.

I am going to start adding the Treasury Count for all the shops called out here.

  17. Cat Power September 6, 2010 at 1:07 pm #

I think I’ve finally figured out Etsy’s game plan. They are allowing all the resellers onto the site for the purpose of exposing those who can’t get to NYC and Canal Street (think that’s where all the import shops are..correct me if I’m wrong) to all the “beauties” from overseas and treasures to be found in their backyard.

They look at it as their good deed for the year, or eternity, as the case may be.

  18. eyefortineye September 6, 2010 at 1:27 pm #

ohfergodsake! I see I posted those in the wrong thread – Sorry!

  19. detroit September 6, 2010 at 1:40 pm #

I don’t give a rats ass about the rupee to USD exchange rate. Or the lower cost of living in India. There is NO WAY some artist collective, with access to the internet, is making those elaborate bangles for that low cost.

Those are clearly bought by the Etsy shop owner from impoverished street markets. PERIOD! And the people who slave over the stuff for pennies are certainly NOT seeing the Etsy money.

Oh, and this sounds really healthy for the poor workers making the items:

“Lac, is mixed with Glue and is melted in a deep pan and then kneaded into a loose dough and than rolled in lac bar. The lac bar is allowed to cool. Once again, it is heated over coals before colour is applied. Strips are then cut from the malleable bar. These bangles are purely hand made as you can see in the pictures all of them have visible joints at the end.”

So, the workers (likely teenage girls), are working over, and handling, boiling pots GLUE and RESIN!?!?

    From this listing: http://www.etsy.com/listing/54702412/yellow-lac-resin-handmade-and

Yeah Etsy – great, ethical, business model you’ve got going here.

Please, I beg you all, spare the health and well-being of these third world ‘artisans’ who you’re making your fees off of, and just give up. You’re doing way more harm than good at this point.

  20. Jean September 6, 2010 at 3:02 pm #

Interestingly, the shop owner wrote in the description for this:

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/55433902/megh-bollywoodbangles-blue-white-tassels

“I thoroughly enjoyed creating this combination.” Very easy to get different coloured bangles and make a nice combination, don’t you think?! My 5 yr old can do that. Way to mislead people into believing she made them herself.

Also, I’m sick to death of her spamming the promotions forum with her cut and pasting links to her shop. Only has 4 sales as of now and hopefully not one more.

natural and organic buffalo horn. Oh, sorry, I thought you were using the plastic buffalo horn that is totally inorganic and unnatural.

  24. eyefortineye September 6, 2010 at 6:19 pm #

That’s why I find it so ludicrous that Etsy is touting the “Fair Trade” convention

    in agreement with detroit:
So, the workers (likely teenage girls), are working over, and handling, boiling pots GLUE and RESIN!?!? From this listing: http://www.etsy.com/listing/54702412/yellow-lac-resin-handmade-and

Why does Etsy fix stuff no one complains about? ppl have been begging for 1 page listing, coupon codes, different payment integration forever.

  45. Jerky September 8, 2010 at 4:08 am #

The Power that Be at Etsy don’t give a rat’s ass. They will take any money regardless of where it comes from. The Staff are just plain unsupervised. It’s not an issue to the company or the people who work for it. Empty platitudes, man, empty platitudes and most of the babies in the forum buy it, like all babies do.
They want to believe their image of what the site is: Double Rainbow Pony.

  46. losinghope September 8, 2010 at 5:07 am #

Did anyone see the rusty bed springs in the 8 a.m. est treasury? WTF!! But it was photographed in a way that it made the FP. That’s the name of the game. Get a pile of dog shit(use only pedigree dogs) and photograph the hell out of it, and it will make the FP right net to the rusty bed springs and old stanky shoes.

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/VintageEuphoria

  54. notvintage September 8, 2010 at 8:38 am #

John, I don’t see anything glaringly inappropriate on that vintageEuphoria shop. The stuff that is older than 40 years is fine; however, I admit to being fuzzy when it comes to things that are younger. There are other “vintage” shops that deserve a callout, but IMHO this is NOT one of them.

  55. JohnCock September 8, 2010 at 8:52 am #

Well mistagging is rampant. The teddy bear frames have this disclosure:

“The exact vintage and origin is unknown. The condition is clean and excellent without defect. This is a very well-made, quality accessory with good weight.”

I suspect the pumpkin candle holder that was featured on the front page is quite recent.

  56. notvintage September 8, 2010 at 8:53 am #

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/thecagedfairy?ref=seller_info
This one does deserve a callout.

  57. eyefortineye September 8, 2010 at 8:54 am #

Most of that shop looks fine – with the exception of this 99 cent store frame:

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/50521934/bungalow-cottage-cabin-style-ceramic

  58. JohnCock September 8, 2010 at 8:56 am #

    Check the sold items too.

  59. notvintage September 8, 2010 at 9:10 am #

Okay, John, checked the sold items and yup, “vintage” Marshall’s or Tuesday Morning for sure. I stand corrected.

  60. Life During Wartime September 8, 2010 at 10:19 am #

VintageEuphoria is a thrift store shop. About half of her items don’t belong on Etsy. When you see phrases like ‘plantation style’ (like the pineapple) that’s a clue. Pineapples were hot from the mid 90s for about a decade. The frames aren’t vintage. The rooster bowl is newer. And the metal scroll bowl from Spain. A Pier 1 type box. Thrift store heaven.

If you look at her sold items, I doubt any of them are 20+ years old! The two pieces of pottery she describes as by a potter known to her; listed as Handmade Housewares! All of that candle holding stuff isn’t vintage, including the pumpkin from the FP listed as Handmade Housewares and described as being ‘in mint condition’. And the ‘Art Deco’ little trinket ‘from the 50s’ is neither Deco nor 50s.

    Great call out!

  61. Life During Wartime September 8, 2010 at 10:21 am #

Yeah, thecagedfairy makes those Chinese blackened silver cheap rhinestone pieces. Sure she does. Reseller!

  66. PussDaddy September 9, 2010 at 3:10 pm #

You know, when I first got to Etsy in 2007 there was some of this stuff but it wasn’t as bad or prolific IMHO. I know it didn’t cause me much problems as a buyer when trying to search for stuff, although it probably bothered sellers more. Now as time has passed and Etsy has attracted more sellers I think there is simply too much of it to try to keep up with and they have simply given up. I also don’t think the admin are qualified as to looking at some things and telling if they are fake or not, like in the instances of the scarves in another blog post. I think it would be like taking me and tossing me in there and saying ok now you are an expert on all of this stuff and how it is made and if vintage is really vintage, like they just plucking some average Joe off the street and giving them this job of policing this stuff. Of course this is no excuse really as they are still responsible for policing the site and hiring knowledgable people.

I drop a leave a response whenever I especially enjoy a article on a site or I have something to contribute to the conversation.
Usually it’s caused by the fire communicated in the article I browsed. And on this article Diamonds, Cheap Jewels & Free Graphics | Callin’ Out On Etsy.
I was actually excited enough to drop a thought 😉 I
actually do have a couple of questions for you if it’s okay. Is it only me or do some of the remarks look like they are left by brain dead folks? 😛 And, if you are posting on additional sites, I’d like to follow everything fresh you have to post.
Could you list the complete urls of all your community pages
like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?

  70. Steam Wallet Hack 2013 July 29, 2013 at 1:43 am #

I think that what you said made a ton of sense.
But, what about this? suppose you added a little information?
I am not saying your information is not good, but what if
you added a title that grabbed folk’s attention? I mean Diamonds, Cheap Jewels & Free Graphics | Callin’ Out On
Etsy is kinda boring. You ought to peek at Yahoo’s front page and watch how they create post titles to grab viewers interested. You might add a video or a related pic or two to grab readers interested about everything’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it could bring your website a little bit more interesting.
