Doesn’t hurt the copier that they are on teamt who has at least 4 front pages a day. Maybe someone should bring this up with the leadership on that team?

  4. no October 4, 2010 at 10:52 am #

that’s sad! I was all about to say it wasn’t a big deal because glass displays like this have been around forever but its so obvious RBG are copycats! Ugh

Maybe send this to Helen at Regretsy too. I know a lot of people don’t like what Rergresty does but they are great at calling out Etsy stupidity, like not-steampunk nonsense.

dont know if the treasury team will give a shit because whatever gets them on the front page right

  5. detroit October 4, 2010 at 11:06 am #

Wow~ there’s definitely something fishy going on here. And, without knowing the actors, I’d definitely tend to believe BUG. Since the RBG posts their copycat listings right after BUG, but at $5 less!

    That’s kinda psycho – IMO.

  6. Life During Wartime October 4, 2010 at 11:17 am #

This is every artist’s nightmare. And I doubt Etsy will give a you-know-what.

my heart just drops when I read stories like this one. what the fuck.

  9. Hagatha Christie October 4, 2010 at 12:06 pm #

But isn;t this what Bomobob (or whatever his name is) does? He studies the photographs from other etsy shops, notes what sells and then sells the same thing slightly changed. Most here thought what he was doing was ok. This seems like the same sort of thing to me. I nevr know who to believe.

  10. editoreditor October 4, 2010 at 12:12 pm #

I thought that bomobooboo crap was debunked along time ago, Hagatha. As a mystery writer, you ought to be able to figure out that it was all a hoax, in that he was selling those photos before the shops he supposedly “copied” even existed.
Do a bit of thinking on your own for a change.

This is totally different and quite obvious.

  11. ScrapMetal October 4, 2010 at 12:13 pm #

Quite a clear case of “mimicry” (the bug folks will get this!) and the GA is the proof. You could probably get IP addresses too somehow, but don’t know if GA gets that detail. I flagged the shop, who else will, and will Etsy do anything about it?

  12. Sally October 4, 2010 at 2:44 pm #

“it was all a hoax, in that he was selling those photos before the shops he supposedly “copied” even existed.”

Only on ONE occasion. The rest had proof they were put on Flickr before his magically came into “existence”. Why don’t you do your own thinking instead of joining the sheeple that kiss his ass.

  13. eyefortineye October 4, 2010 at 2:49 pm #

This copycat behavior is always sad and disgusting, but the fact that the no-talent copier is doing this within such a short time-frame is glaringly obvious. If I unknowingly bought one of the copycat pieces thinking they were so clever and creative, and found out afterward that they were stealing their entire inventory ideas from a TRULY unique, creative and talented artist – I’d be pissed and embarrassed. At least when we’re shopping at ebay, we know it’s probably going to be a knock-off.

Disgusting cheapass artist wannabe copycat jerk. Maybe when he/she makes enough money, they’ll buy some CREATIVITY and originality.

    Anybody can copy.

  14. Hagatha Christie October 4, 2010 at 2:54 pm #

editoreditor, I don;t appreciate your little unwarranted dig. I;m sorry you think I was insulting your little forum crush, I was just asking a question. Calm down.

    Hi All,
Thanks for your support and love that my video made it to this wonderful site. Their behavior has been going on for over a year and I finally got the energy to put this video together. Sadly, this is only a fraction of what they do. I would love to just create and live a happy crafting life but have this guy on my back. I have over 15 other examples that I will be posting on my blog soon (below the video) so stay tuned for more.

One thing you can see this guy do is “heart” everyone that leaves feedback on my site. Not illegal, but unethical. What do you think?

Please share this on your facebook, blogs and any place else. The more views this movie gets, maybe ETSY will start sticking up for their artists.

We have to stick up for ourselves.

    Love you guys! Kevin

  18. The Unknown Etsian October 4, 2010 at 4:59 pm #

And to add the icing to the cake- RealButterflyGifts is a damned RESELLER-

    http://realbutterflygifts.com/

Yeah, Etsy won’t remove them. Resellers bring in too much money. }:/

  24. OhNoItsNOT October 4, 2010 at 5:58 pm #

Perfect for Etsy’s new “collaborative concept”. realbutterflygifts SUCK and so does Etsy. It cheapens what we do as artists. Makes me feel like a fucking whore and Etsy’s trying to put me on the street to do five dollar blowjobs.

  25. Em October 4, 2010 at 6:22 pm #

This is so sad. I am sorry, BUG, that you have to deal with this bullshit. I love your shop! When I have some extra money to decorate my place I’m definitely going to visit 🙂

People like this deserve to be royally screwed. It just blows my mind. It’s one thing to be inspired by someone’s work (I can’t deny that I’ve been inspired by other jewelers on Etsy), but this is flat-out copying… and it’s cheap. Where are people’s effing morals?

  26. madmomma October 4, 2010 at 6:51 pm #

    B.U.G.
my heart goes out to you! I recently noticed that a local artist started making the SAME product I have been making for years – only they offer theirs in a different color. Several years of selling on Etsy and not once has anyone ever tried to imitate/copy and to find that someone here in my hometown decided to copy my item is just shocking.
I’ll spread the word and start flagging away…
Sending you good vibes and love!!!

  27. madmomma October 4, 2010 at 7:02 pm #

    OK…
this I don’t understand (taken from RealButterflyGifts etsy profile):
Over the past 18+ years we have supplied our framed insects for resale to the following companies: The National Wildlife Federation (our 1st customer). The American Museum of Natural History, The Smithsonian Stores, The Discovery Channel Stores, The Nature Company, Yale and Harvard Book Stores, Monticello Thomas Jeffersons house), The Sundance Catalog, Hallmark Creations Stores, Walt Disney Parks, Knotts berry farm, Bush Gardens Tampa, Sea World, Six Flags Parks, Cypress Gardens, Dollywood, Luray Caverns, The Houston Museum of Science, San Francisco’s Pier 39 Butterfly Shop, Moody Gardens, The San Diego Zoo and Their Wild Animal Park, Luxury linens, Beals, Dayton Hudson, Marshall Fields, TJ Max, Nordstroms and many many more national retailers as well as hundreds of small retail and interior decor specialty shops along with many other zoo’s, Museums and Butterfly houses nation wide.
    ——————————————————–
So WHY the heck do you have to even sell on ETSY if your company is that successful? If they indeed are making the items on their own, they have every right to sell on Etsy, and if they have been in business so long and do so well- why the need to copy BUG’s original work? crap, they look like they have a million different styles available… so why be a**holes and copy another artist? These people REALLY piss me off… I think I just may have to write them a nice little letter to tell them they suck.

  28. Inspector Yuk October 4, 2010 at 7:27 pm #

Unfortunately, flagging because of copying won’t do any good. the person who is being copied has to follow the steps outlined in the tou in order to have Etsy take the copiers down.

Maybe we ought to write to these companies that supposedly buy this copiers stuff and let them know what a lowlife they are and link to this blog post. I’m pretty sure the Smithsonian would be very interested since they often contact etsians to put things in their gift shop.

  29. Morgansilk October 4, 2010 at 7:42 pm #

I swore I wouldn’t post here again, but Hell, guys, we are drowning in a Sea of Crap.

If anyone wants to copy my designs, it will take them about 30 years to do it. That’s how long it has taken me. I would have to hobble over there personally and kick their asses with my bony fists.

  30. Lizzy October 5, 2010 at 3:45 am #

I get mimicked and copied all the time and it sucks. I quit looking at competitors shops because every time I do I see things that look just like mine.
I have no problem with people making the same items as I do but when you notice a pattern it raises eyebrows.

  31. MakesMeGag October 5, 2010 at 5:32 am #

raises more than eyebrows, it raises ire.

I don’t know enough about vintage to ferret out a fake, but what the heck is with the inflated shipping charges? $10 to ship a bracelet (and that is the price if it ships with something) and insurance (which protects the seller) is an additional charge.

    ****

And quite a few are obvious man-made fakes, dyed stones, or dichroic glass.

    For example-

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/58142645/925-sterling-silver-pendant-jewelry

WHERE is there rose quartz? I see a fake dyed stone that I can’t remember off the top of my head which dyed stone it is, but it most certainly is NOT rose quartz.

The purple may or may not be amethyst- it could also be fluorite, , so the others are suspect as well.

  42. whoreforcolor October 6, 2010 at 7:56 am #

It may be that Kryseld doesn’t understand the concept of shipping with another item. You don’t charge MORE for that, you charge less. But $10 for shipping a bracelet is insane, and you’re right, it looks as if she is just cleaning out her closet with recent items.

  43. mrpouncy October 6, 2010 at 8:09 am #

I don’t know what to think about this shop:

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/55732412/hand-made-goodyear-welted-shoes

    http://www.alibaba.com/product/anruishoes-12244716-0/Goodyear_Welted_Dress_Shoes.html

A lot of men’s shoes are handmade (right?). These may very well be handmade, but the price makes me feel all funny inside.

I did check on a pair of my husband’s shoes – they were $185 and not handmade. They’re nice, but not handmade. And these on Etsy are handmade for only $138? I think things can be handmade in volume – lots and lots of hands, and thus, $138 works out for them, but is there a limit on how many hands can be making something to sell on Etsy?

Shops like this make my brain all gunky with trying to figure out what the word handmade means, or what it means to Etsy.

  44. Life During Wartime October 6, 2010 at 10:52 am #

I didn’t look at every item in kryseldl01, but I didn’t see any vintage there and items are listed as handmade. Looks like another seller who thinks Etsy is like Ebay with cheaper fees, who knows her items aren’t old enough for Ebay’s vintage categories and believes she is following the rules.

FryShopping is a reseller, selling Asian import jewelry items. If you made your own pendants or jewelry, would you call your shop ‘—–shopping’? I bet Fry can be found at the local swapmeet.

    Good call outs!

  55. Sarah (with an H) October 6, 2010 at 8:23 pm #

I don’t even know where to begin with this shop. They have every red flag there is, and yet they’ve still been on Etsy since July, making over 250 sales in that time. Some of their items even have the name of the wholesale company they buy from in the item title (as well as their websites in the stolen catalog images they’re using). It looks like they may have had some Etsy coaching, as all the finished jewelry listings I checked had “supplies” as their first tag. http://www.etsy.com/shop/helenzhang831027

  56. Life During Wartime October 6, 2010 at 8:42 pm #

How can a finished costume jewelry ring be ‘supplies’? helenzhang831027 seems to sell legit supplies, as well as reseller jewelry. And that’s the problem. Etsy ignores violations in almost any shop that has other items properly listed.

  57. amused October 6, 2010 at 9:26 pm #

it would appear that Realbutterflygifts complied with BUG’s requests to stop copying and removed the offending listings. So all entires on the blog BUG was keeping about this, and the video, have been removed or privatized as a result.

    Hi All,
The video was made private because RBG took down or changed many of the listings in question. If they go back to their old ways of impersonating listings and copying designs, the video will be back up.

THANKS ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT and this blog was very important for getting the word out! Glad the art community came together on this. Once battle won – many more out there.
