    Wow.

I must admit, I giggled. But the stuff is clearly not handmade. Not that etsy cares.

Regretsy also featured them this week. I guess if you want people to notice your Etsy shop you have to come up with something dramatic or drastic, in this case. That’s sad.

I am sorry. Refering to women with words like cunt, spelled correctly or otherwise, and pussy– THEY OFFEND HALF THE POPULATION.
It took too long to get where we are now, which is halfway there, so this shop can stick its head up its ass where it belongs. Handmade or not.

  7. RealDeal October 14, 2010 at 1:44 pm #

I sent them a convo with expressions of disgust and reported the shop. Watch them report me and my shops will be disappeared AGAIN. I have no words to describe the lack of KLASS in this shop’s title. They need to be forced to change it NOW

At least on the Japanese site there were no listings with Disney characters.

Now where did I put that address for the Disney Tattletale site? If anyone has it handy, just drop them a note and I have a feeling the shop will be gone soon…name and all.

    They are disgusting!

I second all the opinions on that word. One of the worst… ugh I don’t even like hearing it. I do, however, love the word sepulchral.

BUT to see this after seeing the Featured Seller using Care Bear designs.. It seems like it’s just not going to stop. I didn’t know adult sized fantasy rompers were “in”.

I pretty much agree. It’s all in the context. Kinda (though the analogy has limits) like the ‘n’ word.

Like, if a dude called me a cunt in anger, I’d be ready to fight. I’d relish the chance to sucker punch him in the face.

But, if I’m discussing some ‘dumb cunt’ with a friend, well, I’m entitled!

Also, it’s cultural. People in the UK don’t have the same taboo about the word (is the subject store from the UK?). They throw it around all the time with the same ease as bitch.

Sidenote: Did you all know that while, in the US ‘fanny’ is a term for the arse, in the UK it means, well, a woman’s cooch.

So, they cringe when we in the US refer to Fanny Packs. lol. Since to them, that is like saying, Pussy Pack.

  26. sick of cupcakes October 15, 2010 at 9:07 am #

True about the UK. “Tw@t” has not nearly the same meaning it does here, LOL.

  27. Life During Wartime October 15, 2010 at 10:34 am #

It’s more than InviteDelight on Etsy. There’s a whole industry out there selling customized downloads with copyrighted images. On Etsy, for just one style:

    http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query=toy+story+birthday+invites&search_type=all&includes%5B0%5D=tags&page=1&ref=related

My guess is that the images are licensed, and the shop owner does only the customization. She buys a software package from the original licensed designer. Like the customized children’s books with licensed characters, which are also available on Etsy.

    Some handmade, huh?

  28. Inspector Yuk October 15, 2010 at 11:16 am #

Lol, with the invention of the Cricut, especially the computerized ones I’ve seen on Home Shopping Network, I suddenly realized where a lot of these cupcake holders and cake decorations come from. Not much creativity or handmadedness there either.

Imagine me thinking that people were making their own templates and cutting by hand……

  29. Life During Wartime October 15, 2010 at 12:08 pm #

cunt and pussy are trailer trash terms. Want to be associated wth it? Fine. but don’t pretend it;’s funny. YOu just think i’;;s naughty, which is what makes the immature types giggle.

  32. detroit October 15, 2010 at 3:00 pm #

“Trailer trash” is an offensive, classist term! I loved in a trailer as a child – and I’m not trash! I have a degree from a top 20 university and graduated with honors.

And I’ll say pussy and twat all I want. Linguistic taboos are an interesting topic that reveal a lot about one’s culture. And indeed are studied by scholars.

And I don’t ‘pretend’ anything is funny. Something either IS funny to me, or it isn’t.

    So, STFU you stupid cunt!

  33. detroit October 15, 2010 at 3:00 pm #

Oops – i LIVED in a trailer. Not ‘loved’ – lol

  34. detroit October 15, 2010 at 3:04 pm #

And I don’t think there’s anything ‘naughty’ about female genitalia (what cunt and pussy refer to). They are an amazing part of a woman’s body. And I refuse to be told they’re ‘naughty’ or ‘dirty’.

I think YOU’re the one with the problem, Right. Maybe you have some issues with self-hatred? Feel inferior b/c you’re a woman?

You should work on that, before you chastise people you don’t even know on a message board.

  35. Inspector Yuk October 15, 2010 at 3:26 pm #

Well, I find words like cunt and pussy very vulgar and offensive. I don’t even like typing them.

And I’ll say studying linguistic taboos is much different than using the terminology. Scholars study rapists and murderers too, but don’t go around raping and murdering.

I was also a trailer dweller at one time, and while the term ‘trailer trash’ is derogatory, there certainly exists a subset of people for whom the term is most appropriate. Of course, I suppose I am considered a classist, although my definition of class is based on one’s conduct rather than where they reside.

  36. The Unknown Etsian October 15, 2010 at 4:58 pm #

  37. sick of cupcakes October 15, 2010 at 7:01 pm #

right, you are way too mature for me. Way to offend. People who use the term “trailer trash” are much more offensive and immature IMO.

Detroit, I love you and your trashy ways. ❤

  39. Moi October 15, 2010 at 11:09 pm #

Detroit, with a mouth like “stupid cunt” I can see WHY you lived in a trailer, and why you’re getting offended being trailer white trash 🙂

  40. right October 16, 2010 at 12:16 am #

Vagina. Penis, Labia. There are lots of terms you can use that are not derogatory. Trailer trash was a poor use of terminology, too. All these terms indicate misuse of vocabulary intended to offend, for those who did not get my drift. None are funny.

I am sure there is another term for TT that would be more appropriate, too, but my case is strengthened when someone who admits to referting to themselves as TT calls me a cunt.
If I am making love (NOT FUCKING) it’s not much of a turn=on to call my breasts ‘tits’ or other parts of my body a cunt or a pussy.
A cunt is worse than a bitch, its something to be used and thrown away,
Either you get it or you don’t. Lovemaking and fucking or bumping uglies are pretty much different things.
My self esteem is fine, that’s why I prefer to have my personal beautiful body parts given the respect they deserve. Making ove is respectful, fucking isn’t. Of course, lots of people get turned on by the use of abusive language, but that’s a deeper subject.
Or maybe its a generational thing. Women of a certain age know what it’s like to be called those ugly names by people who don’t see that there is anything wrong with it.

All Copied from the Urban Dictionary:

“First of all you don’t need to live in a trailer to be trailer trash, and only a small percentage of ppl who actually do live in a trailer are considered trailer trash and their characteristics are…
    annoying
    loud mouths and foul language”

“Cunt: Derogatory term for a woman. Considered by many to be the most offensive word in the English language.”

“A derogatory term used to insult men. The fact that pussy refers to a woman’s genitals means that this term, used as an insult, assigns negative value to women’s genitalia and also to women in general. ”

I avoid buying items using those terms, being intimate with a man who uses those terms to describe me, and try to avoid having those words ever pass my lips. Cunt and pussy are what guys use in groups of guys in order to posture. Also not very attractive….. which is why they probably would’n’t use those terms with women around unless they intentionally want to offend them or show off to their equally immature buddies.

  41. sick of cupcakes October 16, 2010 at 6:02 am #

Wow, you sure like to hear yourself talk. I can tell by the name “right” that you are never wrong.

  42. bellacruz October 16, 2010 at 9:07 am #

I wonder when such ugly words, as those bandied about above, became cool, acceptable language to use when describing a woman. Haven’t women struggled enough to be seen as people, to then allow themselves to be referred to in such a vulgar way? Is our (collective) grasp of language and history so limited, that we consider these words the most effective way of communicating our thoughts and ideas?

Women are still, in our modern era, victimized, exploited, stalked, killed, raped, molested, under-valued. It’s beginning with our little girls. It affects all cultures and races, originating in many religions. It’s very sad.

  43. detroit October 16, 2010 at 12:16 pm #

    Dear Right: TL:DR

And, I was trying to point out the irony that you were bemoaning the ‘offensive’ use of cunt and pussy in the same breath as you were calling people ‘trailer trash’. Pot, meet kettle.

Words only have the power and the meaning we give them. I choose not to find references to my genitals to be offensive in certain contexts. Because there is nothing inherently wrong with frikken labia. Much in the way black people have reclaimed some of the power of the ‘n’ word.

But you all feel free to go on and perpetuate the misogyny! Toodles!

  44. Inspector Yuk October 16, 2010 at 12:16 pm #

Right, I’m going to guess you and I are from the same generation. I’m in my mid-fifties.

I’ve seen a rather disturbing trend in the younger generation when it comes to freedom of expression. Rather than respecting those that view certain terms offensive or vulgar or possibly affecting how people may perceive them (as in the reference to trailer trash), they lash out and accuse others of having ‘issues’ or being uptight,

My husband swears like a sailor. When we are in a group of our peers, he lets the language flow freely. When we are around my parents, he keeps the language in check. When he deals with his customers, he is cognizant of his language use because he knows that certain language will offend them.

I suspect with all detroit’s bluster that she will use any language she chooses, I’d bet dollars to donuts that she would not call her boss, mother or customers cunts or pussies to their face.

Why is a word used to describe female genitals – pussy, for example, ‘ugly’?

I think a lot of this stems from women accepting, and internalizing misogynistic values.

Take back the power, I say, to my fellow bitches and hos!

  46. detroit October 16, 2010 at 12:23 pm #

Inspector – With all due respect – I think you’re missing the point. I’m a huge feminist. And I believe in the power of language. And the power people have to change language, and to change meanings. And I won’t let people using terms to refer to my body put me down.

Just as minorities have taken charge, and taken over some of the language around them, women need to do the same.

Also, I’m not that young! lol. I’m close to 40.

Last thing, I most certainly have had many discussions of this nature IRL, with friends and in the classroom. And I discuss issues like this with my Mom all the time. She’s brilliant. And no, I wouldn’t be talking about cunts or pussies at work any more than I’d be talking about vulvas or anuses at work! Duh!

  48. PussDaddy October 16, 2010 at 3:21 pm #

    PussDaddy

  49. Inspector Yuk October 16, 2010 at 3:34 pm #

Totally with respect to you as well, detroit.

Discussion is different, I have discussed issues like this with my daughter who is 22. I haven’t had the opportunity to discuss it with my 77 y/o mother, but if the subject arose, I imagine we could discuss it. Both of us being nurses (and my daughter a nursing student), we have certainly discussed genitalia using the proper terminology, there was no need to use slang or vulgar terms.

It’s kind of funny, because I would say you are offended by the terms as well, or you wouldn’t attempt to take away their power.

because I view a word as vulgar doesn’t mean it has the power to make me feel denigrated, but that doesn’t mean the term isn;t used to denigrate. I can control my reaction to the word, but I can’t control the intention behind it’s usage.

With regard to the shop name, I would say that it was probably used for it’s shock value because it’s considered offensive by most people. It’s meant to draw the attention of a certain crowd with little thought or caring about those who may find it offensive. this is what I find disturbing. It’s gratuitous and pretentious.

  50. bellacruz October 16, 2010 at 5:05 pm #

@detroit, those vulgar words are offensive because they are generally used to offend. Our body parts have correct names, so there isn’t a technical need to use an “offensive” term. I do not understand how using the word freely “takes back the power”, when society at large still views the word in a negative light and the word is used in a negative way.

I certainly would not want my little girl referred to in such a manner, nor will I teach her that she’s powerful if she uses such words to describe herself. She will be taught what is correct and proper and have power in self-respect.

That’s just how I feel about it. I respect that you see the matter differently.

  51. Life During Wartime October 16, 2010 at 5:34 pm #

Just for the record, the ‘c word’ isn’t a vulgar term. It’s a fine old IndoEuropean word, and I don’t think body parts are nasty.

I’m in my 50s and experienced my share of sexual harassment at work. Executives didn’t use vulgar language to me. They just asked me in G-rated language to take off my clothes! (For the record, I didn’t do it.) The first time I was propositioned at work I was a summer intern, only 17.

Words aren’t nasty, body parts aren’t nasty. It’s all about intent and context. If a woman on Etsy wants to call her shop something like that, she will be judged accordingly. No one would use that name if they weren’t hoping to give offense.

  52. max October 16, 2010 at 5:58 pm #

When I saw Regretsy feature this shop, I realized:

  53. PussDaddy October 16, 2010 at 6:59 pm #

Very well said. And I didn’t know the history behind the word, I find that interesting although it doesn’t really change my view. Curiosity getting the better of me, I did a little research and read the wiki article regarding it’s origins and various usages. It seems to me that it will be a very long time before it’s an acceptable term, if ever.

If this shop’s purpose is to merely be descriptive and not intending to cause offense, then it’s clear why all the costumes attempt to cover their face. They must have a severe deformity if their face resembles female genitalia.

  57. ohmeohmy October 20, 2010 at 10:28 am #

I usually agree with you, Detroit!

But not this time. I’m okay with the words “fucking” and “pussy” and I must say I cuss like a sailor. I do love all words, cuss words included to describe something. They are all beauitful in their own right.

But the very worst and denigrating name a man can call a woman is “cunt”. I think it’s an extremely ugly word akin to the “n” word. I never use it and if a man chose to call me one, I would slap his face.

It’s a negative word because a man will use it when talking about a woman. A man cannot be called a “cunt”. Only a woman.
