pricelesstshirts, DiscountWeddings

30 Oct

This item was on Etsy’s front page a few days ago. A screenprinted t-shirt from a “New Jersey company” that shows its website in its Profile as

The website has thousands of t-shirts and the copyright shows they’re a corporation. There is no mention of # of employees or any other indication this is a “collective.” Yet Etsy grants them free front page advertising.

is just another Etsy garage sale…
and full of non-handmade wedding goodies such as:

and online:

Not a discount from discountweddings since they charge more than twice as much for the mass-produced cufflinks.

  2. Jules Noctambule October 30, 2010 at 1:28 pm #

Maybe I’m just not that gullible, but nothing about Discount Weddings — not the shop name, not the pictures, nothing — would have me thinking for even a moment that anything there could be handmade.

  3. linda October 30, 2010 at 3:46 pm #

    is this allowed?

  4. Thud October 31, 2010 at 12:57 am #

Priceless also appears to gouge on shipping ($5 US for a onesie?) and uses the verboten term ‘onesie’ in their tags on a non Gerber shirt.

Personally, I think hypnosis CDs have no place on Etsy, just like Tarot readings. But as long as the buyer gets something tangible from the transaction. like a CD or a file they can print out of a tarot reading, Etsy allows it. That’s just stupid.

  6. LaDeDa October 31, 2010 at 12:16 pm #

Cheap shit is cheap shit, nice for them to advertise that they admit it’s cheap shit.
Hypnosis DCs? I bet THOSE work; great item for stupid people/.

  7. sick of cupcakes October 31, 2010 at 12:46 pm #

By stupid people you mean the Etsy employees, right? That could explain lots of things.

  8. Kori Houghton October 31, 2010 at 12:51 pm #

I should set up an Etsy shop to do tarot readings, and interpret all the spreads as a business or personal disaster for the shop owner if they stay open on Etsy. And I do think I could come up with a convincing line of baloney for any selection of cards. Then I’ll refer them to a sock puppet account shop selling affirmation hypnosis CDs.

big uproar in the forums over this.. anyone know the what happened?

  10. LaDeDa October 31, 2010 at 1:07 pm #

WEll, obviously Etsy staff has knocked off another seller who dares to speak his/her mind. The kids who work for Etsy are completely arbitrary and protect each other over and above any TOUs they may want to recite.
I tend to support that OP because this kind of thing has happened to lot of people who have no way of telling anyone about it.
I don’t need to know who the OP is, because it could be just about anyone.

Don’tcha know that according to Rokali, every staff person is “their own CEO”, meaning that there is no one in charge. It’s a recipe for abuse, even if the staff are competent (which they very often are NOT).

    “loosewire says:
    Hi there,

We don’t take account closure lightly, and make every effort to communicate with active members before closing an account. Again, the nature of the communication is private.

If you have further questions about this, please do contact Support privately here:

I’m going to close this up now, as we can’t get into any further detail regarding account closures. Such matters are best handled privately.

    Thanks. ”

THIS IS NOT TRUE. They do NOT MAKE “EVERY EFFORT TO CONTACT”. LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE! And contact Etsy for information? Sure, you’d get the honest truth from one of those lackeys. I call unmitigated bullshit.

  12. sick of cupcakes October 31, 2010 at 4:25 pm #

That’s WoolyBumblebee. She got royally screwed by those assholes.

  13. The Unknown Etsian October 31, 2010 at 5:11 pm #

    I smell a class action suit brewing……

  14. losinghope October 31, 2010 at 5:14 pm #

I found the whole story on a link in Wooly’s Twitter stream:

  15. em October 31, 2010 at 6:36 pm #

thanks, losinghope. I was wondering what the backstory was behind this whole debacle. Can’t say I’m surprised.

  16. Life During Wartime October 31, 2010 at 9:24 pm #

losinghope, that is horrible! If you are a reseller posing as handmade, or a vintage seller passing new items as old, the worst thing that can happen is getting your items ‘disappeared’. Etsy makes every possible attempt to keep resellers on board.

But if you are a shop owner with thousands of good transactions on Etsy, and just happen to make some businesslike public criticism of the site…your shop is doomed.

I hate those cupcake ‘thank you Etsy for using K Y’ posts in the forums. Those cupcakes should be forced to eat their own rancid icing, I swear!

  17. clarabodara November 1, 2010 at 5:50 am #

Thanks for posting the link to Wolly’s story!
The whole thing makes me want to puke. Etsy has gone too far once again! Etsy needs to come down off their high horse and learn how to run a real business and STOP bullying the sellers that make them money.

Is it just me or does Etsy seem to have lost every last bit of common sense?

Sellers beware- Big Brother (Etsy) is watching you, and buyers beware, Etsy could close your favorite shop at any given time and if you have a pending purchase/transaction you will be shit out of luck as the seller will have no way of completing your order. Way to stay classy Etsy!

  18. freckleyredhead November 1, 2010 at 6:37 am #

It sounds like the shop closings as a result of “Coralgate” have begun. Does anyone know of other shops that have been shut down?

  19. Jules Noctambule November 1, 2010 at 7:01 am #

Ugh, looswire just did not help that at all. Is there an Etsy class on giving smug, condescending, useless closings, or do they just hire people who are like that on their own?

  20. sick of cupcakes November 1, 2010 at 7:30 am #

If you click on the “About” link at the top of ECO’s page here, it will take you to a bunch of comments that people leave. The latest one (#208) is pretty amusing. I just read it and had to share…Is it written by some Etsy employee? Some unlicensed Twilight seller? LOL!

This shop was in Etsy finds today:

Mass produced jewelry? Lord. When I think of all the time I put into MAKING my jewelry, this just makes me sick. Not to mention buying the supplies that go into making that jewelry. The tools I’ve invested in. The time I’ve spent learning my craft, perfecting it, coming up with new designs only to see sellers like this not just allowed to sell, but featured. It just makes me sick.

  23. Inspector Yuk November 1, 2010 at 11:45 am #

Anybody else see Pricelesstshirts as Pricelessshit?

  24. WangFu November 1, 2010 at 1:01 pm #

It really sucks the joy out of making things, doesn’t it yuk? I don’t want etsy to have that power.

  25. clarabodara November 1, 2010 at 3:46 pm #

Seeing Etsy is too busy to help out these poor un-etsy-cated sellers, I feel it is only the kind and polite thing to write to these individual sellers and let them know that they are breaking the rules… I also tell them that they will probably want to take care of it before others start flagging their shops.

I bet Etsy staff really appreciates that there are concerned sellers (like me) that really just want to help another seller understand what etsy does and does’t allow.

You see- these sellers understand that I go out of my way to help them, because they can’t really do knocking on Etsy’s door to ask if it was right for me to notify them of their blunders, because, well then they would just be setting themselves up to get into even more trouble. So as I see it – sending a nice little note to sellers that are breaking the rules is golly darn, just the nicest thing one can do for another.

  26. LaDeDa November 1, 2010 at 4:30 pm #

Send a nice little note to the wrong person and they will report you, and Etsy will dump your shop like a hot potato if they have decided you are not a cupcake.
It happened to me— so I no longer help out Etsyans who don’t read and understand the tagging process, even though 99% of the people I contacted thanked me profusely.

If anyone at Etsy gave a rip the directions would be simpler, less conflicting, and there would be only three choices for the first tag. They have been begged for YEARS to fix this simple thing, and usually say “Great idea!” or “It’s in the pipeline” or some other bullshit phrase.
Since Kalin considers anarchy a business model (“Everyone is a CEO”) apparently there isn’t one single etsy employee who gives enough of a shit to fix the terrible tag instructions, which cause ENORMOUS ANGST AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS.
    T H E Y D O N ‘ T C A R E .

  27. clarabodara November 1, 2010 at 5:58 pm #

I was being sarcastic about “helping”… I no longer have a shop worth keeping on Etsy- so I just go there from time to time to be be a brat. ; )

  28. LaDeDa November 2, 2010 at 5:49 am #

oH GOOD, then you are out of danger.

  29. PussDaddy November 2, 2010 at 4:14 pm #

Oh my. someone forgot to send a “nice little note” to San Design about her tag stuffing, you might wanna get right on that LaDeDa. She is most likely a cheerleader for your “team”, so why don’t you volunteer for it?

  30. PussDaddy November 2, 2010 at 4:22 pm #

See, that is what really pisses me off, and takes away from the credibility of those who have taken up bitching and complaining in the Etsy forum as a lifetime commitment-those who are most vocal are often doing shit they shouldn’t be doing themselves- but no one points that out in the middle of a fucking thread for everyone to see now do they? Instead they look the other way and say nothing. Why is that?

  31. PussDaddy November 2, 2010 at 4:25 pm #

I can’t even begin to point out how many of these people come crawling out of the woodwork with an undisclosed idenity they have had for years so they can speak with it in the forum when their shop gets closed-undisclosed identities that you know damn good and well these people have been there long enough to know they should be disclosed-so they are already breaking a rule by doing this-but does anyone every point this out? No-they just climb on the boo hoo wagon and cry mega-sized tears in support of people who were already breaking the rules.

  32. PussDaddy November 2, 2010 at 4:28 pm #

Just about anything is acceptable, as long as it is one of your fellow hags that you like and consider a friend or ally that is doing it, right? This is how I usually see it happening anyway.
Yep, then they can do no wrong, and if they do well they had a good reason and admin never should have done anything to them for doing it because they are “special”.

  33. NotAgain November 3, 2010 at 6:37 am #

Shut the fuck up, PD, and get some coffee or sleep it off. Your anger is ruining your life and you sound as though you should be smart enough to be aware of it. Not that I care what happens to you, understand.

  34. PussDaddy November 4, 2010 at 12:49 am #

I am not angry. But you sure are.

  35. PussDaddy November 4, 2010 at 1:25 am #

And cut the snark you sark-y dried up old bitch, k?

  36. NotAgain November 4, 2010 at 12:48 pm #

Bait somebody else for fun; I’m not angry, I just don’t like to be around people with that much bile.

“dried up old bitch”? Yep, that’s me
    “hags”? leftover Halloween hyperbole
    “Cheerleader”? not since 1967

So I guess you have 2/3 right. My use of the word “fuck” was obviously uncalled for, and gave you an excuse to abuse me further in order to amuse yourself. Keep it up, everyone should have a hobby that they are good at and it looks like you have found your niche.

  37. PussDaddy November 4, 2010 at 8:31 pm #

Of course, if anyone says anything to you it is abuse, right? If you do it to them then what it is. I can’t stand your whiny ass. I honestly can’t. And you are full of yourself. You talk down to other people concerning what they make and how much better yours is and how yours deserves so much more to be seen. You make me fucking gag. I have listened to your decrepit ass whine about me saying I don’t know anyone under 60 who wears scarves for years now. Get the hell over it already. That must have really traumatized you or something. Other people feel the same way-you talk down to people and think you are better than everyone. Take your lazy ass off and go make a site of your own if your shit isn’t showcased enough. But no, you already said you won’t do that. In fact I don’t think your sorry assed blog has been updated for eons. Try doing something for yourself for a change instead of waiting for someone else to do it. And stop your incessant crybaby whining for God’s sakes.

  38. PussDaddy November 4, 2010 at 8:32 pm #

I meant to say if you do it to them then what is it. Typo.

  39. NotAgain November 5, 2010 at 7:06 am #

What in the hell are you talking about, and to whom? And from how many years ago? Go create something besides antagonism.
I’m doing just fine; thank you for being so interested as to check up on what you think I am doing.

This is my last post on ECO, because of this type of stalking. Why would someone stalk someone online for years for no apparent reason? Think about that one.

  40. NotAgain November 5, 2010 at 7:09 am #

Oh, by the way, calling someone a dried up old bitch, a hag, and using every nasty term that comes to mind in a personal way IS ABUSE.
