Jewelry is one of the highest markup items, hence why 80% of Soho street vendors in NYC are selling it. I sell my shirts alongside them, and the jewelry people buy it by the piece for $1-4 and then sell it for $10-100. They gross $500K+ each per year (tax free) in the busiest tourist city in America. On Etsy, women with an aptitude for merchandising take junk jeweltry (and other faux vintage items) to the next level by photographing it nicely and giving it a story through words and/or pictures. Buyers like the relatively low prices and don’t question the quality of the merchandise. Etsy is busy making money from all the listing fees and their sales %, so they aren’t complaining because illegal resellers account for a large % of their income.

Unfortunately, resorting to a sockpuppet is not the way to go, even if it is calling out a reseller.

Other than the few people who saw the thread before it was locked, now that it IS locked, no one else will see it unless they go here or ClosedThreads, so it defeats the purpose.}:/

Etsy had proven, time and again lately, that they don’t give a rat’s ass about resellers anymore. All they care about is the numbers they appear to have for those potential partners they’re looking for.

This shop was called out before many months ago, maybe in a series of comments? There were also links posted showing their items for wholesale.

It’s been a year since Etsy promised to do something effective about resellers. Etsy lied.

Shouldn’t all those finger-waggers know that the OP realizes calling out and sockpuppets are against the rules? Since he/she created an account with the name ‘etsymeansmadebyhand’ ?? OBVIOUSLY the OP doesn’t give a rat’s ass!

  5. Life During Wartime November 6, 2010 at 2:30 pm #

em, I think the finger-waggers do know that the OP knows. They are just making their marks as hiney-smoochers.

  6. whoreforcolor November 6, 2010 at 2:34 pm #

Nauseating cupcakes scolding the OP. They are only encouraging TPTB.

  7. madmomma November 6, 2010 at 2:45 pm #

I just realized how annoying the people in Etsy can be about “calling out”- It is like there is always someone sitting around *waiting* for a call out to happen and then it is a race to see who can be the first person to post the obvious… “ohhh, this is a call out and the thread will be shut down”.

Em- you are dead on! the OP always knows when they are calling out.
I get a chuckle out of those who have to add in- perhaps you could better spend your time working on your own business than worrying about others- then that poster sticks around in the thread to chime in about how this is a call out and call out’s are wrong… blah blah blah… So why the hell are THEY hanging out in a call out thread?

I rarely say much about the actual people on Etsy, but am beginning to get really be irritated by the stupidity of the masses.

Kudos to those who do public call out’s on etsy… because it just becomes more and more obvious to everyone there that Etsy has tons of employees that are hanging out in the forums pouncing on a call out thread, but no one to actually look over the shops that are constantly being flagged as re-sellers.

  8. madmomma November 6, 2010 at 2:48 pm #

    whore-
    what is TPTB?

“hide the children, cover your eyes and ears… as there is a call out in the room, oh no!”
    LOL

    Hate those damn cupcakes.

This shop has been reported repeatedly. But hey, its a cash cow! The most amusing remark of the forum posts was the one saying that she couldn’t be a reseller because her necklace was x long and the factory made ones were xx long.

  11. Etsy Made Me Do It November 6, 2010 at 3:01 pm #

Seems like there are plenty of people really not happy with Etsy posting in the forums these days, and then you have the ass kissers.

  12. Life During Wartime November 6, 2010 at 3:50 pm #

TPTB = The Powers That Be.

I can definitely tell! Feels like I’m back in elementary school…

  14. WangFu November 6, 2010 at 4:12 pm #

I say more power to them. etsy isn’t playing by their own rules – why should others?

If someone has the guts to make a sockpuppet and call out a reseller, I’ll all for that. Flagging isn’t working.

Why will no one else see it on Etsy? It’s still there, it’s searchable by title and post, such as reseller or the shop name NYLightMetals. I regularly look through forum categories for closed threads and I doubt I’m the only one.

I sure wish Etsy would make a rule against shaming OPs for calling out or making a sock puppet. Perhaps these idiots should take their own advice and click on REPORT THIS POST.

yep, I brought up this shop’s name here before. Not a bit surprised they’re still alive and thriving. Sad.

Just saw something interesting on the artfire forums. Remember SparklePeach and all her other fruity shop names? She’s on AF bitching about being closed down and she has no idea why. Yeah, right! Of course, the AF cupcakes are all feeling sorry for her. Blech!

Wasn’t this the one who opened another shop after having a few bad fb’s and we all wondered how she managed to sell so much in a short time? I do not know what or how but I think there is more to the story that we don’t know as to how she managed to rack up so many sales in a short time. Not excusing Etsy, but I think there is more to the story than we realize.

Go to her Artfire shop. You will see lots and lots of nonhandmade goods. More interesting is her bio which contains a pic of her “studio”. A badly Photoshopped image of a studio complete with cutsie pie bird images that are badly placed.

  19. detroit November 7, 2010 at 8:20 am #

OMG – all of the callout threads on Etsy are IDENTICAL.

OP: Shop XXX is a reseller!

    Snarker 1: Oh my!

    Snarker 2: IBTL!

Cupcake 1: It’s pretty ironic OP, that YOU’RE breaking the rules to call out a rule breaker.

Cupcake 2: I find resellers unfortunate, but I choose to better spend my time making my shop the best it can be!

Cupcake 3: Tsk! You know OP, lots of wholesalers copy Etsy stores. Did you think about that before making this rude callout?

Clueless Person 1: What does IBTL mean?

Snarker 3: Laying pennies on the track.

    Snarker 1: Hee hee!

Cupcake 1: I totally agree with Cupcake 3. I looked at the wholesale site, and they’re not even selling the same thing! OP, you’re mean and unprofessional.

    Clueless person 2: What’s ‘reselling”

Admin Bot 14: Please don’t call out in the Forums. Also, creating a sock puppet to break rules in the Forums is a good way to put your primary account privileges at risk.

    http://www.etsy.com/policy/dosdonts#thecommunity

I’m going to wrap this up now now. As always, the appropriate way to bring attention to a seller that is breaking our rules is to flag the shop or item.

    Thanks!

  22. sick of cupcakes November 7, 2010 at 9:39 am #

I love this one from one of the callout cupcake hard-on threads:

    “sorry , whats a reseller ? and why is it a problem ? “

  23. whoreforcolor November 7, 2010 at 11:03 am #

Detroit, that is brilliant! Brava. Those threads almost write themselves at this point.

I also saw Sparklepeach in the Artfire thread. The one person who called her out was quickly overrun by the Etsy refugee sellers who have no idea what has gone on before and are disposed to feel generous to newcomers, especially after reading a why-me tale from another Etsy “victim”. I’m new there so I am not interested in speaking out so soon and making enemies, but Morgansilk tried to bust one of her balloons without coming on too strong.

Oh, and Glitzglitter was on the FP yesterday every time I had to check my shop on Etsy (3 times).

Every time I see a non-wire-wrapped piece of jewelry on the FP I do a little internal dance. I am thinking of making a section in my shop called “ETSY TASTE 4 U” and stocking it with wire-wrapped necklaces and earrings, swallow birdies, a charm on a chain, a metal branch on a chain with a few wire-wrapped pearls…you know, the minimalist young-woman-on-a-budget invisible jewelry that you can wear to work, all interchangeable.

I have vowed to stay out of the drama on the forums at Artfire. I have the feeling it could deteriorate quickly there also (see Detroits post for ideas!). I hope that the site will stay true to handmade. However, you can vote on postings to the forum to shush them or whatever they call it so we will have to see how that works.

  26. whoreforcolor November 7, 2010 at 11:40 am #

Really? I just looked and don’t see a way to “Shush” them.

  27. Cat Power November 7, 2010 at 1:22 pm #

In the Artfire forums there is a bar of color above the post, and next to the Avi. The left side is red, the right green. You can “Vote” to move the white dot either to the green end, or the red end. If you want to effectively “hush” someone, just hit the button on the left of the bar and it will register a negative vote.

Get enough negs, and posts are not allowed until the white dot hits green again. It goes back to the neutral position after a period of time elapses.

  28. Toaster November 7, 2010 at 1:33 pm #

I see TheFancyMuse is also in on the SparklePeach sympathy thread. This seller was also on Etsy under the account names jewelsofmandalay, fairycartel, and DIYlocket, all now shut down. Their feedback, before their accounts were removed, was full of negs from buyers who hadn’t received their products. No wonder they’re advocating a ‘fresh start’ on Art Fire! Does anyone know if AF will actually take action on a poor seller if given sufficient proof of their prior activities on other sites?

    I’m with you.

I’ve been avoiding that thread because quite frankly, it started making me nauseous.

  30. Carter Baizen November 7, 2010 at 6:02 pm #

seriously, detroit! the ‘call-out threads’ should have a pre-written option you can just click on.
every time I see “*lays pennies on the track*”, “passes out drinks”, “passes out cookies”, “my dog ate your cookies”, “let’s wrap this up now”, I want to puke my guts out. Really, the next time I catch a callout thread in action, I’m going to pop in just to say “*pukes all over the thread*”

  31. whoreforcolor November 7, 2010 at 6:09 pm #

Detroit, the only thing you left out was the obligatory “Hey there.”

    🙂

  32. WangFu November 8, 2010 at 5:49 am #

So what is artfire doing about these folks? I did a quick look and artfire is also full of copyrighted stuff. Is it inevitable? I am considering moving my current stock to artfire.

  33. freckleyredhead November 8, 2010 at 8:04 am #

Detroit, that is hilarious! And so true! I think I’m gonna copy it and save it for the next callout thread and then post it before all the drama happens . . .

A shop on Artfire has to have been flagged a set number of times (it tells you when you flag it), then it gets invvestigated.

They’re usually pretty good at removing obvious resellers once they get flagged enough, but it does take, sometimes, weeks, or even months for that to happen, unfortunately.

And often, reseller shops don’t seem to get flagged that much there, for whatever reason.

They have said they intend to revist the reseller problem after the holidays, so hopefully something will be done.
