I knew I’ve seen this this “I love you” envelope necklace before!

http://www.dhgate.com/me-b84-jewelry-personalized-vintage-bronze/p-ff8080812a935ce2012a99f62be942d9.html

Just doing quick search on Etsy – I have found 2 different shops using EXACTLY the same picture of the wholesale necklace:

salonstore:

fashionwatchhouse:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/61380228/1pcs-antique-bronze-i-love-you-letter

The 2nd shop uses also photos from the wholesale site – how cool is that!

I vaguely remember a thread where a seller claimed to be the original creator of this piece and was pissed that she was being copied. ROFL These have been around for forever.

I love it when people use the same wholesale picture.

Yesterday someone dragged me into a Forever 21 store and was shocked at the extremely low prices of some of the items. I swear they had necklaces like this one, plus hundreds of trendy owl, robot, peacock feather accessories with prices like $2.80 and $3.80 RETAIL! As I looked through these cheap mass produced items I found several necklaces and hairbands that I’ve seen listed on Etsy, at 10 times the price of course.

I could search for links on forever21.com and flag items but I’m not sure I can be bothered anymore. Etsy won’t do anything about it.

    OT:

Speaking of forever21, they have a pair of knit fingerless gloves for 4.80. I just spent two days knitting almost the exact same thing. There’s no way anyone can make any money as a knitter. At least not someone like me, LOL.

  4. Done and Done November 11, 2010 at 11:59 am #

I’m with you, sick of cupcakes – there is no money to be saved (or made) by knitting and sewing things yourself, one at a time. I do both simply for the love of making things, but I’m not fast (nor do I really want to be) so the wage per hour would be in the negative.

    And WTF does this mean?

“Retro style is very unique flavor of deep ~ ~ ~ very lovable
    worth owning!”

There really is nothing that Etsy can do to remove a shop with mostly charm-on-a-chain jewelry, even if shop uses the wholesaler’s photos and never assembles anything. I mean, how can Etsy prove them wrong if the shop owners claim to assemble all the pieces themselves, or with their ‘collective’ factory? Once the shop is established, and is getting hearts and sales, the most Etsy will do is coach the seller into taking their own photos. Because items like these sell so well on Etsy, the shops do not need FP exposure with catalog photos to rake in the money once they get a following.

I feel really bad for artisans who make their own jewelry on Etsy.

  7. em November 11, 2010 at 1:57 pm #

LDW, the jewelry category is a joke. It’s all wire wrapped, charm on a chain, or severely underpriced. Everything else gets buried in a matter of minutes. If I had known the online market for jewelry was so crazily saturated, I honestly would have chosen a different hobby to pick up. I love it, but it’s only getting harder to make a living from it.

    LOL at that Onion clip.

  12. Life During Wartime November 11, 2010 at 4:20 pm #

Thanks so much for the clips from the Onion! Years ago (before I had a bunch of annoying hand injuries from lifting and moving my husband as his illness progressed) I considered opening a handmade jewelry shop on Etsy. But I decided against it because my stuff had no competition there, which means to me I would not have made many — or any — sales. Most of the jewelry artists I admire from seeing their work online, in books and in magazines don’t have Etsy shops. Heh, I wonder why?

WangFu- I am working on finding out where ramies is getting their clothes from… (how do these shops sell so MUCH so quickly???)

and JewelJewel – i just took a look at the forum post- jeezus- of course Etsy admin has to jump in like an overzealous micro-managing mommie and tell everyone to behave- and then close the thread… seriously, why can’t admin just let people duke it out on their own – let people vent if they want to vent- they’ll all figure it out on their own- and really don’t playground patrol in the forums. way to make your customers feel like they are 12 years old.

  20. Etsy Made Me Do It November 12, 2010 at 4:32 am #

as i would hate to call out someone that is NOT a re-seller – so need to mention that Ramies appears to be legit on the items that are made of linen – found evidence that proves they are actually making their items. yeah! i searched high and low and could not find an ounce of evidence to prove they are re-sellers
(i found photos of they creating the items – looked like they were photos taken in their home)

Too bad Magicmary doesnt know a damn thing about Pagans, Wicca etc or she would know about the Three Fold Law. As in, whatever you put out comes back to you 3x stronger. Put out those used swap meet items and thats what you are going to get back.

There was ONE seller that was featured a while ago, who seem legit and their caramel looks awesome. They’re probably the only people i would ever buy food from online, they iterate that they use a commercial kitchen, and they sell a ton of it so I trust that they aren’t running that kind of business from their home.

Shouldn’t a commercial kitchen be a given for food sellers? Yuck…

  24. JK November 12, 2010 at 10:29 am #

Depending on the state, one can get their home kitchen licensed for food preparation, generally restricted to baking and candy-making.

  25. Life During Wartime November 12, 2010 at 11:54 am #

TheVintageShopper (WTF?) is probably safe because it looks like they have some actual vintage in their shop.

On most sites (not just Etsy) a significant percentage of shops that are supposedly selling vintage also sell newer items. No site that has more than a few dozen sellers has ever been able to keep thrift store junque from being listed for sale. Which is why I have always wondered why sites focused on handmade and art wanted to dabble in vintage, unless the intention from the start was to be a flea market.

  26. it stinks November 12, 2010 at 4:05 pm #

JK, I think that the food sellers should state that in their profiles or shop announcement – that they are in compliance with their states food service laws. Wouldn’t they at least need a food handlers certificate?
In Texas, you must use a certified kitchen and have a food handlers license. And the codes to get your kitchen certified are very strict in our area. It can’t be a home kitchen at all. Everything must be separated. But you’d be amazed how many people don’t know that.
I’ve had people tell me that they make good cookies and could they sell them on etsy. Once they hear what is necessary to become legal, they forget about it.

Even my son’s school makes you bring cookies etc that come from a certified kitchen – no home baking allowed.

I have a dear friend who lets her cats climb all over her counter where she prepares food. Sometimes, when the food is there and it doesn’t seem to bother her at all. But I think it’s yucky. They just scratched in the litter box and now they’re on the kitchen counter.

Well to be fair, the “poor buyer” sounds a little pompous. I’m not sure I agree that the seller should refund or replace. I’m all for the seller taking responsibility if the item is damaged or lost, but this was all the buyer’s fault.

The buyer is perfectly fine with the seller being out of money, just not herself. Maybe the seller would of sent another batch, but requested additional shipping charges or maybe she wanted the buyer to pay half. The buyer hasn’t left the seller bad feedback either. There’s probably more to the story than what the buyer let on.

    laurielbell <———–the "poor" buyer
I have to say, I would rate this sellers customer service as unsatisfactory. I ordered $35 worth of goodies for a friend but accidentally gave the incorrect shipping address. When I contacted the seller, she got defensive and, in the end, would not replace the goodies. I still think about the $35 dollars that is just gone. Even though it was my fault, she should have done the right thing.

It Stinks, in my home state a pet-free home can get licensed for legal sale of home-produced foods: http://www.ncagr.gov/fooddrug/food/homebiz.htm

Inspection is required, and sometimes the goods are tested as well. I do agree that anyone who has managed this should indeed make it clear in their profile; it would give buyers more confidence, I think.

Ya, I’m taking my shop down for sure. Listed one last item just to see what would happen on Fri, renewed twice already and have 14 views. Used to be when I listed new stuff, my whole shop would get tons of hits.

  33. PussDaddy November 14, 2010 at 7:06 am #

When I see something in a store now that I like I just buy it. Why pay for it marked up 10 times on some web site? I find I enjoy it probably more than I usually would just because I got it cheap. And I admit I don’t feel guilty about it.

Thankfully I already know a lot of people who do make their own stuff if and when I want that sort of thing.

Seems like you have an inferiority complex with respect to the US! lol. You need to take your little bitty 小弟弟, and go cry to your Mum that a US company won’t let you break their rules! Boo hoo”

Dear every one, Do you know what “小弟弟” means in Chinese Slang? here I translate it into English :”Penis”
Dear every one, Do you know what “肏你祖宗十八代” means in Chinese? Here I translate it into English: ” Fuck you 18 generations of your family”

    detroit and etsycallout:

We are a registered company in China, We have registered business number, office address, contact number even my Chinese name in my website.
We are responsible for what We say and We do.
    But I have to ask:
    etsycallout, detroit,
Who are you? what is your identification? what is your true name?
Who autherized you to use “etsy”‘s name to publish blogs about etsy sellers?
Who give you rights to accuse etsy sellers?
Who give you rights to judge etsy sellers with your own “rules”
furthermore, do you have any certificates of distincting ” true handmade items” from ” fake handmade items” issued by any official or folk institutes in US or in any other countries?

Esty’s statement do testify that “estycallout” has nothing do with esty company and etsy website, nevertheless, etsy also apologized to us for your harrassment caused to us .

Etsy closed our store as we requested today, We abide by Etsy’s rules, no matter whether it’s decision is correct or wrong.
    We respected etsy’s decision.

    but for you guys,
    detroit and etsycallout,
I am sure You are illegal!
If you are legal, why don’t you guys don’t publish your names, identifications? why only use your anonymous web names?

Why don’t guys make statements on your blog like this:”
We are XXX and XXX, this is a personal blog, which has nothing to do with etsy website and etsy company, We we publish is our personal comments, We are not liable for liability of infringement of laws and privacy, We are not responsible for any insulting and harrassments to anybody!”

    November 21, 2010 at 12:36 am

    Dear all,
So, If you etsycallout guys can’t testify you are not illegal.
You guys not only infringes Etsy’s intellectual property rights by ” use “Etsy” word on your “Etsycallout ” blog, You guys also infringes other sellers’s privacy and rights.
Besides, Did any customers authorized you guys to make gossips on any sellers? No.

    My conclusion:
Neither Etsy, nor any official insistitues, nor any customers authrozied you to do this illegal gossip job,
So, What you guys are doing now is doing evil and committing crimes!
    Did you guys realized it?

I can bet someday, if you guys publish your identifications, Etsy company, any honest seller sure will sue you guys on US courts and get you guys punlished by US laws to get justice for the Etsy users both sellers and buyers.

    November 21, 2010 at 12:53 am

    Dear all,
I am wondering why etsycallout guys are so angry about us and other sellers on etsy and make rumours around.
Here is my answer after considerable thinking and investigation:
    1. these etsycallout guys are the true resellers and sellers of fake handmade items on etsy. I read many of their comments on their blogs, they are also etsy sellers. they are in US.
So, why they are so afraid of sellers in China and other countries out of China?
    as everyone knows:
handmade items or vintage items made in China and other developing countries are much cheaper than in US, actually now nowadays, there are very few handmade items and vintage items are made in US, because of very high cost of human labor.

So these guys purchased many items on Alibaba and Tao and other websites, which are made in China, and then list them on etsy to cheat customers they handmade those items.

But the true makers of the those items find this way to sell they items on etsy. and flood in to sell their own handmade items.

So, this becomes the disaster and nighmares of these etsycallout guys, because direct sellers in China and other countries compete direclty with these etsycallout guys, these etsycallout guys will surely be defeated, and lose their business.
So they find wordpress, this free and anonymous blog to attack the real sellers on etsy. at the same time, in case that they will be caught and prosecuted by laws for their crimes, they hide their names and identifications.

    172 | Thomas
    November 21, 2010 at 1:14 am

    detroit:
You bitch cheater, criminal, real reseller,
why you are so angry with me?
Why you don’t dare to use English to insult me, instead using ” Chinese”?

    Now I found reasons:
    1. You surely are a Chinese American , if you are an American citizen, You probably are one of Stowaways without Ameican ID.
So you even know the worst slang of cursing in Chinese.

    2. You puchased huge lots of items in Alibaba and Taobao and sell them on etsy, So you are very familar with items on those websites, once a true sellers comes on etsy, you found them and start to blogging , commenting and cursing them.

    3. if you are such a Amerian with your Ancestor in China, I am sure every Chinese will whip you this stupid pig, and every Good Chinese man feel shamed of you.

4.Besides you, there are some other active etsycallout guys seems to be Chinese origin.

Why you guys don’t feel shamed what you are doing now?
Why We can’t call you guys criminals and bitches after you shit guys insulted me, even we initially are very polite to you?

    5. The last words, I give you these guys:

Get fuck off Etsy and your damned Etsycallout!!!! don’t destroy Chinese’s reputation and etsy’s reputation !!
otherwise, every honest and brave Chinese and American will fuck you off!!!
