I’ve reported them via flagging (always with explanation and weblinks) and via email. OBVIOUSLY NOTHING happens to Made in China crap stores like this.

  2. Wolf December 2, 2010 at 12:07 pm #

I think it’s becoming obvious that China, Hong Kong and other Asian based or made items/stores are taking over Etsy.

Maybe they’re looking to sell the site to a buyer from China or something, at the rate these resellers are popping up and nothing is ever done about them.

  3. sick of cupcakes December 2, 2010 at 12:42 pm #

I don’t feel sorry for anyone dumb enough to buy from these sellers. These items can be found cheaper with a quick search. I only care about the legit sellers which seem to be fading into the background.

    Shame on you Etsy.

  4. Life During Wartime December 2, 2010 at 2:42 pm #

I don’t feel bad for duped buyers, either…except that the visibility of the resellers on Etsy, especially during the past 18 months, has skewed the buyer demographic younger, dumber, and less affluent. Not a good thing for legitimate shops.

  5. madmomma December 2, 2010 at 5:33 pm #

I currently have a list of over 50 shops that are re-sellers, just taking time to weed through and find the links for them. Also found some insanity with a bunch of shops in China that took some serious digging, but finally found some of the sources for them today,
it is actually quite disturbing to see some of the sales numbers of some of these shops… and to think they are continually taking business away from all of us that actually make our stuff with our own hands.
I just don’t understand how Etsy can’t do a damned thing about this. Yeah, it takes me time, but etsy has a STAFF and they can also look into their account info, address and all that stuff.
I sometimes feel like it is a waste of time, but then when you compare the sales numbers- if all of those 50+ resellers in the clothing category were shut down, there might actually be hope for my shop, and I might actually be seen!

So thanks Etsy Call Out for posting the info we find.
Hope you get a chance to look at the crazy mess of crap I found on the China shops… it gets better – I found MORE links and more shops that have the same items and the catalogs they are bought out of. (not alibaba this time)

I flagged that shop and found this one!

    Nice catch Sally-
especially seeing they just opened yesterday.
there was also a tie that was on FP last week all mass produced in a factory –
i like to go back to their SOLD items and go to the first few items they sold and many times you will see tags on items or they will have watermarks from the original place they got them from…
it seems that after time the re-sellers realize their mistakes – or got busted and started taking their own photos of the mass produced items.
I am seeing a LOT of crappy cut and paste jobs on clothes – cutting out the model and then pasting her on a new background.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Raceytay is nearing 300 front page appearances on Etsy! Given her current success and appearance rate, we can expect her to achieve this astonishing feat sometime this weekend. That is unless she is featured five times on Friday, something that is entirely possible.

The real question is what item will push her over this threshold? Will it be a pink photoshopped photo of an avenue of trees?* A red photoshopped photo of an avenue of trees?** A unisex snail photo?*** A photograph of a reindeer ornament?****

Is this really vintage? It made the front page this evening (EST).

I saw them when they were on the front page and made a big to do about it on twitter.

I don’t know anything about designer bags, but that Dior bag looks downright cheap and nothing different from a bag I’d find at Target. If I were to spend hundreds of dollars on a purse, I’d need a little more authentication on the seller’s part!

  12. sick of cupcakes December 3, 2010 at 5:29 am #

White walls and dirty floor….that’s vintage enough for etsy!

  13. madmomma December 3, 2010 at 6:00 am #

Jamie- I don’t know if that is vintage or not, but I can tell you that this photo kind of grossed me out for some reason… http://www.etsy.com/listing/54392679/uptown-girl

  14. popstarprincess December 3, 2010 at 9:47 am #

search elgarbo’s sold items through tineye – they’re all ripped off stock images.

    what a fake.

  15. JK December 3, 2010 at 10:41 am #

Based on her complete lack of detailed information, I’d bet that the purse is A) new and B) a complete fake. But hey, it has snazzy pictures with a crankyface model, so Etsy will eat that crap right up!

  16. die esty scammers December 3, 2010 at 12:48 pm #

    That’s because it’s a guy…not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Etsy has proved time and again to be a successful outlet for the exhibitionist of all size and shape and 5 o’clock shadow.

  17. Jinx December 3, 2010 at 3:31 pm #

    Maul-
Raceytay is on the FP again with that same lame photoshopped sky “photo” – drives me crazy!
You are not a PHOTOGRAPHER if you digitally manipulate your photo to that extreme. It should never be marked as a photograph, but a digital manipulation.

I like purist photography, and can’t STAND that photoshopped BS they call photography, it isn’t photography people. wake up!

  18. Life During Wartime December 3, 2010 at 5:04 pm #

I’m not sure whether anything in that shop is really vintage. It seems unlikely that a shop would have many multiples of the same items for sale in a bunch of different colors if the pieces were 20+ years old. Check the FB. Check the measurements.

  19. PussDaddy December 3, 2010 at 11:32 pm #

In all honesty I am not sure buyers who buy this stuff care if they were duped or not, at least merchandise-wise. They might care more money-wise though. If they want to buy they want to buy it, but the paying more for it may matter more to them.

  20. editoreditor December 4, 2010 at 6:12 pm #

    Jinx-

It’s art, either way. Whether you call it photography or digital art. It’s like saying you don’t like Picasso because he was a cubist, and people’s faces are really cubic. Photographic manipulation has been around since the advent of photography. Things that I used to do in the darkroom in the 70s are much easier now digitally. You can’t draw a line between purity and “over-manipulation”. It’s a broad, gradual spectrum. It’s art. If it starts as a real photo and gets massaged along the way, so what? People transform “real” objects all the time in the name of art, and change them until they almost become something else.

    That said, fucking candy canes?

  21. editoreditor December 4, 2010 at 6:18 pm #

Oh and BTW, elgarbo (or should I say el-dupe-o) is back, this time with a disclaimer buried way down in his shop announcement about how he uses some licensed photos that aren’t his.
Tineye is your friend. What a fucking flim-flam man. All those people who bought his photos thinking they were getting the work of a talented guy.
    Fake.

  22. PussDaddy December 5, 2010 at 3:02 am #

I guess elgarbo’s disclaimer makes it ok then.

  23. Amy December 14, 2010 at 5:20 am #

    FYI: southernliving is gone now.

  24. Artfire Seller December 14, 2010 at 2:26 pm #

The title of this is a little misleading. It should say southernliving26.

They are in one of the Etsy Finds email today called “Varsity Team” with more of their reseller, purchased-from-China crap.

Apparently the original southernliving was shut down. And they’ve reopened under this name.
