dorothyprudiefabrics

[I’d like to stay anonymous, please.]
I know that this person has been called out before, but since she’s still around and apparently has the gall to list more and more impermissible items, I think it’s time to revisit her.
I have flagged this shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/dorothyprudiefabrics numerous times over the last year.  I’ve finally given up.  While she does carry fabric in her shop (perfectly fine, of course) she also carries “vintage style” tablecloths, towel sets, chenille blankets, and hankies — all brand new and all manufactured by Moda.  Examples:
This isn’t even a close call.  This stuff is brand new (she even says in the description of many of these items they are “brand new and in mint condition.”  Nice.).   It’s cute stuff, darling even, just not even close to being Etsy legal.  But of course she has not been closed, despite being repeatedly flagged.  To the contrary, she lists more and more of these items in her shop as time goes on.  It proves to me that Etsy really doesn’t give a crap.  I stopped flagging her shop last month and won’t bother anymore.
Maybe I should get a wholesale license from Moda and add a few of these “vintage style” items to my shop?  Sigh.

This shop was called out (twice?) on the older Garagetsy blog as well. After her first call-out there, she briefly moved her finished Moda items to Supplies (yeah, not much of an improvement) from Vintage. I guess she’s realized that Two-faced Soidier Sailor HeyMichelle was typing out of her nether regions when she claimed to be addressing reseller issues a year or so ago. Because Dorothy here is a reseller, and her sold item listings prove that there are permanent reseller shops established on Etsy.

Talk about flaunting it right in your face. No pretense about being vintage, she boldly states it’s brand new, knowing she won’t be going anywhere.

I wish I hadn’t been quite so hasty in dumping my Etsy shop, AF is going down the same path, except that their members must all have their heads in the sand, because while they can call out in their forums and their flagging system actually works, they seem very reluctant to do so. I read a thread on there by some poor person who tried to wake them up and he/she got bashed big time.

Resellers bring in traffic, Venues make money via listing fees, final value fees and Pro shop signups. Resellers profit because of their lower prices, sheer volume and are probably favored over handmade sellers because of that and the fact that they’re too busy or disinclined to join in the forums to complain. They are the perfect customer.

I’d be interested though, on how many resellers purchase anything on Etsy? I’d bet almost none. their profits aren’t going into the handmade community, not like handmade and real vintage sellers. So, not only do they compete with us in our own venue, they also don’t buy from us either.

That is disappointing to hear about AF. I had plans to expand my shop there in 2011.

  4. Life During Wartime December 6, 2010 at 6:05 pm #

You don’t see the Vintage section of the AF forums unless you are signed-in. What an eye-opener!

Um, “some poor person” was a newbie who dissed the veterans, who don’t need waking up or scolding.

Artfire doesn’t have the same business model as Etsy, and people over there get pretty sick of sellers trying to make it into the new Etsy.

  6. Stifler's Mom December 7, 2010 at 11:22 pm #

Her descriptions say “Vintage STYLE” so maybe the reason she hasn’t been shut down is because she’s not breaking the TOU’s after all.

  7. uh-huh December 8, 2010 at 8:09 am #

It doesn’t matter what she “calls” it.. New shit that she didn’t make = not Etsy legal.
    It ain’t that hard.

  8. iheartvintage December 8, 2010 at 8:41 am #

    Stifler’s Mom:
You are not allowed to sell “vintage style” items on Etsy. Vintage items must be 20 years old or more to be listed as “vintage” on Etsy. Listing items in the vintage category that are NEW is a blatant violation of the TOU.

  9. sick of cupcakes December 8, 2010 at 8:44 am #

Oh she certainly is breaking the TOU’s!

  10. Jennifer December 8, 2010 at 9:05 am #

    This one’s also blatant:

    “handmade” melamine plates, really.

Did anyone see the Finds yesterday? They had a listing with a professional picture of Johnny Depp for a cuff “like” one that he was wearing. What are the chances the seller had the permission to use that photographer’s picture, hmmmm?

  12. Deborah December 8, 2010 at 9:17 am #

Here is the listing, BTW: http://www.etsy.com/listing/63528725/depp-style-brown-leather-cuff

I like your way of thinking! I have looked at some of the feedback and have yet to see any of the re-sellers buying items from Etsy. Of course they *could* be doing so from undisclosed accounts.

Ever wonder how many of these big China re-sellers are connected? And WHY do ones that look like they are “possibly” selling a few handmade items always have sh*t in their shop that some other re-seller has in theirs?

  14. WangFu December 8, 2010 at 10:35 am #

    Here is a gem: http://www.etsy.com/listing/63634737/vtg-louis-vuitton-epi-leather-tote-bag?ref=sr_gallery_40&ga_search_query=vuitton&ga_search_type=all&ga_page=&order=&includes%5B0%5D=tags&includes%5B1%5D=title

    Read the last para:

The word vintage means “not new” unless the it reads “new/vintage”.

What the fuck does that mean?

  15. Dee December 8, 2010 at 10:56 am #

ugh, new featured seller breaking the rules with an item dependant on another purchase. http://www.etsy.com/listing/63839013/rush-shipping-for-holiday-delivery-with?ref=storque

  16. detroit December 8, 2010 at 11:55 am #

And this just goes to show – to all the Etsy favorites yapping in the forums about how you need great photography – the particular reseller here can’t even be bothered to focus her camera. Or take more than one blurry picture half the time.

Yet, she has hundreds of sales.

People will buy any goddamn thing! Lordy!

But they seem to ignore people who actually work hard at making handmade items. And gravitate towards poorly presented crap.

    Wonder why. Prices I guess?

  17. Life During Wartime December 8, 2010 at 12:22 pm #

Stifler’s Mom: selling mass manufactured textile items that are newer than 20 years old is a violation of the Etsy TOU. You can sell new ‘vintage style’ fabrics as a supply. You can sell items YOU MADE YOURSELF as Handmade and call them ‘vintage style’. You cannot list new items you purchased wholesale, that are finished and ready-too-use, on Etsy. No matter what you call them.

I think it would be hilarious to have an Etsy Call Out Awards Show. Most Obvious Reseller, Best Admin, Worst Admin, Biggest Suck Up In The Forums, Smartest Poster In The Forums, Worst Tag Stuffer, etc. You get the idea.

We could all nominate and then vote! Good times. 🙂

  19. imwithya December 8, 2010 at 8:19 pm #

Etsy Callout Awards- love it! How about funniest translation of a listing description into English.

BTW there is a seller is asking a legit question in the forums right now about her buyer not receiving their package BUT have a look at the OP’s shop. She’s totally a reseller but nobody responding to her thread seems to have noticed.

Just a quick search from the OPs shop of the thread that imwithya posted.

Worst tag stuffer is probably a tie between all of the featured sellers this year.

mrpouncy- No joke! That’s one of those fake questions resellers post to get people to look at their shop. But ANOTHER reseller (GiftsofIndia) just posted on pg. 2 of that thread!! WTH?

That thread really demonstrates the futility of expecting Etsy to remove resellers. The OP got 3 sales from begging in the Forums, plus helpful tips to make her reseller shop more appealing to other stoopid Etsy girls.

Sales numbers really tell the story. Many members of the Etsy community don’t care about items not handmade by the seller (or not being vintage) if the presentation is girly and the price is low.
