    intimatestuffs: WTF?

MimeQiQi: collects ‘vintage’ from Asia? As in factory leftovers from less than 20 years ago? When a garment is altered, no matter the ‘technics’ used, it is no longer vintage.

FryShopping: shop name sez it all. Sells cheap Asian import jewelry and pendants.

    3 resellers. Great call-out!

yeah, I’m sure the condoms and bobblehead dolls (?!?) in that shop are handmade, too… I wonder just WHAT the heck new buyers think of Etsy when they browse through the site for the first time??

Yeah, this keeps happening, really fuckin annoying. You’d have to be blind not to notice it, which I guess explains why admin don’t see it, they’re blind to almost everything on Etsy.

    Another reseller.

Check out the tags on the scissors.

  10. Life During Wartime December 11, 2010 at 12:36 pm #

Love the tags, WangFu! And one tag on the item called out by Sydney in Comment 8 is….wait for it…resell.

I wanna know why Etsy can’t find these items, even when the sellers are leaving them a trail of cupcake crumbs with their tags?

  11. Cat Power December 11, 2010 at 12:39 pm #

Those scissors are definitely Chanel, don’t you think? Or maybe more Gucci…I can’t decide. :b

These 2 pink shoes are not vintage or anything else other than reseller merch:

You can buy the hot pink Justin ROPER cowgirl boots just about anywhere. They are not vintage and sure as hell not Doc Martins. I don’t know where this seller got the idea all this crap with plastic soles is somehow from the “1920s or 1930s” but I have the feeling it all came from the floor of her closet.

  16. whoreforcolor December 12, 2010 at 9:06 pm #

Wang Fu, I think that’s utterly tasteless as a Treasury, and I’m STAGGERED by all of the crazy cupcakes falling over themselves with praise. It’s heartening to know that someone else agrees with me! I was worried there that I was just too much of a cynic.

  17. Life During Wartime December 12, 2010 at 9:28 pm #

WJW, boots, about that Treasury! I am seriously offended. No way is that a tribute to Elizabeth Edwards. That is exploitation.

Take a look at this thread from a crafts-related message board. This is a great example of how the resellers at Etsy are dragging down the reuputation of the whole site:

  21. em December 13, 2010 at 12:27 pm #

OMG Sydney that takes the cake for me. Maybe a requirement for selling on Etsy is to be English-literate.

  22. em December 13, 2010 at 12:28 pm #

Damn.. should be “requirement for selling on Etsy SHOULD BE” …

  23. Life During Wartime December 13, 2010 at 12:53 pm #

I LUV the listing for the forklift! Gone are the days when Etsy would remove that as fast — if not faster — than they now close threads in the forums calling out violators. I saw a forum thread about this item more than 12 hours ago. As I type this comment it is about 4PM EST. The cupcakettes on the Etsy staff have been in the office all day…doing what, I wonder?

  24. Cat Power December 13, 2010 at 2:32 pm #

The Elizabeth Edwards treasury is so tasteless, I hope the creator meets Karma face to face SOON!

What numb nut would be so insensitive?….Oh, forgot, I’m talking about someone in the cupcake category of Etsy….no sense, no brains, and no compassion.

Wow. Two people burned in that one thread.

I like how a bunch of people chimed in with all the tired old excuses….Chinese sweatshops copy Etsy sellers, how do you know they didn’t knit from the same pattern as the Ebay superstore you found the exact same item in, don’t throw a seller who could be legit under a bus, yadda, yadda, yadda…

Etsy just keeps drumming that message. And most people may only visit the forum once or twice – when they have a problem when they realize their ‘handmade’ item is available at Target, but for a lower price. But they are quickly talked out of it by the cupcakes / admin. So they buy the excuses. I would too. If I didn’t already KNOW better.

Etsy seems to have made an internal policy shift to allow handcrafted LOOKING, worldmart-y items. Regardless of where the items really come from. Problem is, they forgot to tell everyone who shops there that.

    Fuck em.

  27. Life During Wartime December 13, 2010 at 4:33 pm #

Anyone who doubts that rip-offs occur on Etsy needs to check out Regretsy. There is an ongoing series (Compare and Save!) of call-outs featuring reseller junque, old items in poor condition listed as ‘rustic vintage’, and shoddy handmade compared to currently available retail items. A huge eye-opener for those who mistakenly believe that Etsy is still a site about handmade by artisans and collectible 20+ year old vintage items.

I used to think Regretsy had wussed out on the reseller issue, but that isn’t the case. I think her unique call-out method is damn clever!

  28. detroit December 14, 2010 at 8:42 am #

Ha ha. I saw that, LDW.

I do remember a while back, someone called out some item (that April posted, or something in the comments) as a reseller item.

She, or another person responded ‘This site isn’t about calling out resellers.’ I was like, awwww bummer!

But she does get something in every once in a while. Always makes me happy

  29. detroit December 15, 2010 at 8:20 pm #

Prolly no one’s reading this old thread anymore, but Regretsy is CALLING OUT!!! Woot!

    http://www.regretsy.com/2010/12/15/hurry-only-50000-left/

Of course the item is still up on Etsy!

They used to be embarrassed by this sort of callout. But, no longer! Boldly go, Etsy! Into massive FAIL!!!

Either Etsy becomes insolvent, or they become (Walmart, Amazon, Ebay) 2.0.

Whichever way – they lose. The handmade ethic is looooong gone!

  30. detroit December 15, 2010 at 8:25 pm #

Hope your locally-made USA-cash-stuffed pillows are comfortable, Etsy stake-holders! Sleep well(!) knowing that you f*cked a real, energetic crafting movement! Originally powered on the backs of lots of talented women early on. Way to go dudes!!!

Oh well, the real skilled craftsmen, tastemakers, etc. have moved on.

    Etsy who?

  31. em December 16, 2010 at 10:30 am #

I think I know what’s wrong with my business plan – I’m selling things carefully handcrafted by myself! Of course, stupid me, I should have been buying the crap already made for pennies and then selling it at a ridiculous markup!

Can’t believe dutchpearl is a reseller (or can I?). I’ve seen her shop frequently and admired her success. Wow… just goes to show how deep this problem goes.

  32. mittengirl December 20, 2010 at 3:37 pm #

just catching up, but thought i should add that i saw the stealth innovations etsy shop (someone linked them about the scissors) but i was more interested in why they are carrying flip and tumble products but say that it is coyright of stealth innovations in the product description. and they are cheaper on Etsy than on the Flip and Tumble website.
I decided to write to Flip and Tumble and ask them why they sell their bags cheaper on Etsy and why do they have the same tags, but say that they are stealth innovations on Etsy.
That kind of thing is really confusing to a consumer like me.

    *sarcasm intended

But I have decided to start writing the manufacturers of the products that are being re-sold on Etsy. Etsy is so stupid and won’t do anything about it – maybe if enough companies start to complain, perhaps THEN etsy will listen?

  33. mittengirl December 20, 2010 at 4:53 pm #

    well here ya go…
this is the kind of stuff I send to Etsy along with my flags, apparently they no longer care even if it is a FACT that someone is a reseller – here is what I wrote to flip and tumble and their response is below:

I was just shopping on Etsy and saw your bags are cheaper at this shop http://www.etsy.com/listing/53274578/flip-and-tumble-reusable-shopper-yarn
I am confused. The bags look the same as the ones on your website, even have the same tag, but it says they are copyright of stealth innovations. Is this your company also? And why are they cheaper in the Etsy site and more expensive on your site?
    Thank you.

    and their response:

Thanks for getting in touch with us.
Stealth Innovations is a reseller of our bags. These bags that you’re seeing on Etsy are our bags, flip & tumble original bags. We provide suggested retail pricing for our resellers, but we don’t force them to sell at that price.
Hope that helps. Feel free to let me know if any other questions come up!
