such cute clothes! Definitely an obvious reseller, though.

Anyone else get the feeling that they are getting rid of the forums because they’re going to be revealing some sort of news that’s going to have everyone up in arms and generally freaking out? Like they’re finally going to admit that they are allowing resellers or something.

This could just be me being paranoid, though. lol.

  10. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 11:27 am #

I’m with you em I think so too! These resellers would bring them lots of money.

  11. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 12:43 pm #

Since Etsy won’t get rid of most resellers now, I really would be better if they came clean and admitted that resellers are now acceptable within some guideline we have yet to see.

At least then members of the Etsy community who shop there would have a statement from the shop that the item they are purchasing was made in a factory setting, probably somewhere in Asia. And sellers considering Etsy as a venue would understand prior to opening up a shop that they will be competing with resellers who sell similar merchandise.

  12. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 12:56 pm #

I would rather see a section for resellers than compete with their prices in “Homemade” I really find it sad though because some buyers are so clueless and they actually believe that it is being made by someone that as their shops say LOVE THEM.

The clothes though are really cute but if I wanted to buy them I would use Ebay and not Etsy.

  13. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 1:53 pm #

I think a separate section for resellers or factory shops would be the way to go.

However, Etsy still has not managed to remove the thousands of vintage items listed in the various handmade categories, with more added every day from the Ebay transplants. In some handmade subcats, about half of the listings are for unaltered vintage or newer thrift shop items. This is clearly stated in the descriptions, so all Etsy would have to do is contact the shops involved (much faster and easier than addressing each listing by iteself) and tell them fix their categories or have their shop be closed.

I used to flag commerical unaltered items I found in handmade frequently, but nothing was ever done about it. I’d love to see some kind of meaningful analysis of Etsy shoppers, showing what they think they are seeing for sale in the Handmade categories. Maybe a lot of buyers felt strongly about buying handmade when Etsy opened, but I am guessing the current demographic profile of a frequent Etsy buyer is quite different.

Factory shop in today’s Get The Look:

    Their page on taobao:

Check out the ‘handmade’ cards at the bottom of the page!

They did originally have a bunch of other products in their Etsy shop, which were removed — links go to the oopsie page now. I guess Etsy reviewed this shop, and said ‘we will all pretend that you are just a handmade ceramics shop, and you can stay open if you make the other items go and stay away’?

  15. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 3:05 pm #

The vintage section is a complete mess!

I agree Etsy has changed. I’ve been there for over 4 years now and I don’t look at Etsy as Handmade….more like sort through what is real handmade, real vintage etc. I think the only thing I maybe safe to buy is supplies.

There is defiantly a different demographic profile there. I’m waiting for these changes and see if it gets worse or better.

  16. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 3:40 pm #

Yeah, Vintage is messed up. And so is handlmade. Like this commerical unaltered item from today’s Get The Look Decor:

The braintrusts who vet items for Get The Look don’t care that this item was listed as handmade housewares, even though the description says otherwise. Etsy is the home of hopeless stoopid, it seems.

  17. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 3:46 pm #

That cali shop puts this in her listings:
Also please note that because of different producing batches, there may be deviation of 2~3 cm. batches??? I tried to post links to the wholesale site but it didn’t work for me.

Well it is handmade they put a flower in a jar lol

  18. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 3:53 pm #

2-3 cm is big! What a shoddy production process. I thought all of this stuff was computerized now. But even handmade clothing should be more accurate. How would you know if anything would fit you? Is that 2-3 cm larger, or smaller? WTF?

  19. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 4:36 pm #

Because they aren’t making them they run in batches at the warehouse. I’ve seen other sites like it and sometimes they get negatives because it wasn’t what was pictured either. Maybe they were out of stock and just sent something similar from the factory.

That shop will stay because it mixes with that Pyrex stuff which is pretty cool. Wouldn’t mind getting some myself but there is another Etsy seller that does personalize glass and she is not offering reseller stuff with her glass.

I couldn’t tell about the other stuff she offers the jewelry. I just don’t know enough to call that out.

  20. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 4:56 pm #

calisunshine2010 sells clothing, personalized glassware, jewelry, belts, and scarves. The only stuff possibly handmade by her is the etching on the glass, but that may come from a factory also. Being a vintage seller, I know how much space it takes to store glass, dinnerware, and other larger heavier items. Maybe calisun lives in a space where she has rooms to store her blank glass pieces, but I am skeptical.

  21. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 5:02 pm #

Well if you ever come up with this sign:
LMK Arggg it was in Vintage and I got so happy! Then seen reproduction. This item though I love it should not be there.

Being a hoarder lol I know exactly what you mean 🙂

  22. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 5:03 pm #

Or are vintage reproduction allowed? I don’t sell much vintage a dress once in a while but that is about it.

  23. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 5:30 pm #

    Vintage reproductions are allowed if

    1) they are more than 20 years old

    2) they are handmade by the seller

    3) they are supplies.

Needless to say, there are all kinds of factory made repros sold on Etsy that are new and not supplies. Check out the Garagetsy blog. There should be a link to it on the right side of the ECO main page.

  24. Jael January 30, 2011 at 5:46 pm #

I love it… look at the title, then look at the picture…

  25. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 6:00 pm #

Jael, so funny. Eeek, it’s a bunny bear! A cross-cultural communications breakdown, I think. Calisun must be a student, running a shop for her family’s factory or warehouse business in China.

EtsyDon’tCare, 4and1 Imports no longer sell the Mobilgas sign. Seller does not give dimensions, so can’t tell if it is the same size as other gasoline repro signs 4and1 sells now — for about $5.00 for a 12 inch sign. Other nostalgic repro signs are 25 inches in diameter, and you can get a Mobilgas one for about $80.

  26. Life During Wartime January 30, 2011 at 6:07 pm #

    Springtime for CandyLites and Etsy!

On the front page right now:

Since when are strings of lights a supply? Easily found elsewhere for sale.

  27. EtsyDontCare January 30, 2011 at 6:45 pm #

I can get a repo of the Mobile on Amazon too for about 11 bucks. I wanted a vintage one and got excited. I should have known better. At least they did have reproduction in their tags so they weren’t trying to pretend it was authentic.

That coat is adorable, I a bit too old for it but it is cute!

Maybe someone can tie some flowers on the string of lights and it could be considered homemade. They would sell lots of them and now they have a supplier. Etsy is so sad 😦

  31. yup it's ebay January 31, 2011 at 2:13 pm #

45″ is ankle length on the model. Ankle length for me is 52″ and I’m 5’6″. Model is 4’11” ?

  32. Izabela January 31, 2011 at 2:46 pm #

I am loosing interest in etsy, it is so hard to get noiced there, takes ages to list, re-list, chat in forums to promote and then you find those unbelievable unoriginal and unhandmade creations, I love you guys and hate you at the same time, because you are opening my eyes too wide 😦

    thanks anyway

is there really nothing we can do?

so as I read your blog I noticed that on Artfire there is similar thing starting to happen?

  33. EtsyDontCare January 31, 2011 at 8:15 pm #

Thought I would check in the shops today after wasting my time flagging. The blouse which I sent a link with my flag:
    Has now been sold.

All shops are live except beautiful dress, but I’m sure Etsy is helping with some wording so they can be a collective shop of some sorts. The shop is there just no listings. If it was closed down there would of been the oh oh

  34. EtsyDontCare February 3, 2011 at 6:43 pm #

Well I found a vintage Mobil Sign. Too much money for me put it is rather cool:

  35. LeSigh February 10, 2011 at 2:16 pm #

With the xuenia shop, the only person to leave feedback for them left a positive the same day that they purchased the listing…

  36. EtsyDontCare April 7, 2011 at 7:41 pm #

I thought I would check in to see if anything was done. Not on this shop. First they took off the listings for clothing but they are now up to 55 again:
All for under $30.00 and cropped heads.

The other are either empty or a oh oh…what makes calisunshine so special. They had the same crap.
