Owl Treasury

18 Jun

I created this treasury awhile ago to see how long it would stay in the treasury list. It is a subtle callout and is still there. I made reference in the title ‘Love Ali of those Etsy Owls” to the website they are all getting their imported junk from Aliexpress.
Here is the treasury: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/4d97754ffc8f6d912c9c49ac/love-ali-of-those-etsy-owls
Here is the website they are getting their stuff from.

I flagged the shops as I put them in the treasury but they are all still there selling the same junk. The sad thing is that at least 6 items sold and I had to fill the treasury slots with more. Some of the necklaces sold for as high as $25.00 when you could ship them from China for less than $5.00 each. There are also a lot of sellers selling the same stuff but adding 1 or 2 charms so it qualifies as handmade.

You might have to give up on this one. Seems to me, Etsy’s very selective in whether they’ll take any action against resellers.

I have to say that showing more than one seller with the same photo of the same item for sale is pretty decent evidence that none of these sellers with common photos made the item.

But then these cheap owl trinkets are big sellers on Etsy, so I can’t really expect admin to shut any shops like this down.

Shops which take their own photos are much harder for me to accept as resellers because taking the photo requires more skill than hanging a mass-made owl watch or finding on a chain…which is Etsy legal simple assembled jewelry.

So, my guideline is copied photo = likely reseller. Otherwise, who knows?

::sigh:: I doubt Etsy will do a damn thing.

I see these fabulous handmade (?) items are still selling, so here is a link to an Etsy search to help you refill your Treasury:

Note duplicate photos from different shops, right on the first page. Of course, not every item returned by the search is from a reseller…just want to get that out there to cover my posterior.

Good grief! What buttholes to deliberately break etsy’s policies. Go sell that crap on ebay or craigslist.

I have flagged and flagged and flagged these damn owls and no one has ever done anything. The part that pisses me off the most is that when you buy these owl pendants, they come with the chains. So really they are not making anything.

I used to like owls. Now I cringe when I see them.

Yes, its pretty clear that the chain is the same on a lot of these, making it pretty obvious that this isn’t even “pendant on a chain” legal.

@angryjeweler – Who was the reseller? Link gives me an uh oh!

  11. peevypants June 18, 2011 at 6:01 pm #

ugh! i recently tagged a seller because i saw that damn watch-bellied owl! blech! pisses me off that their stuff is so cheap. pisses me off worse that so many people are eating it up. meh! and double meh!

Just wondering about this shop? I am not a good reseller source researcher, and I know many here are.
I just look at the prices, and know I cant even buy the material to make these for that price, and its raising a red flag to my reseller radar

It looks like they locked my treasury so I couldn’t add anymore stuff. I’ll probably be locked to pretty soon knowing Etsy. They love locking out the people that call out the resellers, but do little about the successful resellers.

  14. angryjeweler June 18, 2011 at 7:50 pm #

wow – they took that down fast – reported it & the whole shop is empty now

yeah, they’re in CA, but the ‘biquinis’ are from brazil & the jewelry is from columbia…..

  16. angryjeweler June 18, 2011 at 7:53 pm #

have to say i am impressed to see a shop shut down within a couple of hours on a saturday night.

  17. Dee June 18, 2011 at 9:41 pm #

So what it takes for etsy to shut down is to admit that you’re a reseller! So long as you swear by all and sonny Jesus (& make a demonstration video) that you make everything in your shop AND you’re making big money (for them), it really is okay to be a reseller. Sorry, but it seems like you are fighting a losing battle.

Honestly, I don’t blame them….It’s much easier to order from China and resell it. I wish I could find a product that I could buy for a couple of dollars in China and sell here for $10. Hmmmm…. What’s the name of that owl wholesaler again?

  18. nolongerbuyingetsy June 19, 2011 at 7:39 am #

I agree that we are fighting a losing battle. So many of the resellers are making so much money for Etsy that I can see why they turn a blind eye. However, when somebody like me vows to never shop there again because I feel like Etsy has lost the integrity they started out with, at least it’s a start. It is easy to contact sellers you know are making handmade and just tell them you like their work and would love to purchase it, but refuse to purchase it from their shop because of how you feel about Etsy. I can guarantee that not one seller would refuse to sell off site. I made a $700 purchase this way. Etsy lost 3.5% plus .20 which was almost $25.00. Not much for them maybe but a lot for the seller who I thought deserved the money more.

@MoreEtsyCrap – that looks like a reseller to me, but you”ll need to provide links to prove it to Etsy.

Flagged those stupid 3 owls AGAIN and put this in the comments:
I flagged this days ago and am disappointed to see it still for sale. When I originally flagged I gave you the link to a store online where this etsy seller is clearly buying wholesale and RESELLING here.

I don’t care how much money this shop has made for etsy. Do the RIGHT THING and take down this listing.

  21. Dee June 20, 2011 at 12:28 pm #

Well that’s sure gonna work…. NOT! Over the past couple of years I’ve been here, I can tell by how admin behaves that most of them are in that 20’s age range…. well there are other things that give them away as being really young. One is not doing the RIGHT thing. Most of the time out of spite. LOL! Most of them really haven’t hit that level of maturity yet. Company’s run by kids, and it shows. 🙂

  22. Yaya June 20, 2011 at 12:34 pm #

Yeah, BargainBabe. You must be new. If etsy actually did their job and enforced the TOU, there wouldn’t be a need for this blog.

Etsy? Do the right thing? Bahahahahaha. Not likely.

You’re so nice. My comments usually go something like this:
“Wake-up shit heads and take a closer look.” or “Hey cupcake, it’s all listed as new with tags in the description. Why don’t you read it?”

  24. Sammy June 20, 2011 at 4:03 pm #

Fake, that’s about how most of my flags read anymore. Sad that they provoke that reaction from us. I’ve tried politeness, I’ve tried shame, I’ve tried being downright mean. I’m not even convinced they actually read the flags, and don’t just hit the trash-it button. Especially if they see it’s a flag coming from someone who flags a lot.

But whatever. It amuses me to tell them to pull their heads out of their asses, even if they’re not reading. Therapeutic, I guess.

  25. Fake June 21, 2011 at 9:37 am #

    I agree Sammy!
