It’s not the overly long shp announcment or descriptions it’s not even
the annoying use of tags in the titles. It’s the locations she states.
If she can afford to live in all those places at once why sell on etsy?

There was a popular seller who had a similar thing. She had about 6 neighboring states. She’s featured in Etsy Finds almost weekly. She either got a conscience and corrected it, or the reporting her worked and she had to change it. Either way those sellers stink.

I think there should be a rule that if you list multiple major cities in multiple states — which are hundreds or even thousands of miles apart — in your Location, you should have to disclose the reason for doing so in your shop. Just like you have to disclose having multiple user names, or list the members of your collective.

There is no way a single seller can have locations in Philly, SF, and Florida…among many others. In the case of this shop, I can’t imagine anything she could disclose that would explain all those far-flung locations.

Etsy needs a bot to generate a list of all shops who have more than X number of characters in their Location, and review that list, like now.

Do people actually put feathers on themselves willingly? She MUST be some kind of a large bird, how else would she be able to travel back and forth to all those locations.

  4. DOH! July 23, 2011 at 1:30 pm #

I reported the item I linked to above, not sure if it breaks rules but it is disgusting.
Are we allowed to paint with menstrual blood and then sell it on Etsy.

Who in the fuck would buy this?

If it makes it to the FP I’m jumping off the roof of my car!

Multiple violation item, as seen on Regretsy:

Violations: listed as handmade clothing, but not made by the seller
listed as 90s, but brand trademark not applied for until 2003,
    so not vintage
mega bad taste exploitation of tragic event

  6. Life During Wartime July 23, 2011 at 2:07 pm #

    Actually, the whole shop
looks like many items are not vintage. Clothing experts, this one’s for you.

  7. PIF July 23, 2011 at 3:10 pm #

Here is what her original stuff looks like.

Her Etsy shop just seems like a bunch of digitally altered pics.

Feel free to prove me wrong tho…

  8. cynicallyopenminded July 23, 2011 at 3:17 pm #

I’m wondering if Sofisticata consigns in these cities and therefore feels that she can put them in her profile. Just a thought.

As for the Amy Winehouse stuff, a beadmaker used the word Overdose in the title and tagged Amy Winehouse. Incredibly tacky.

  9. just me July 23, 2011 at 3:25 pm #

i am not a clothing expert, but i am horrified by the menstrual art. seriously?

  10. Trista July 23, 2011 at 4:14 pm #

That “menstrual art” might be the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen on Etsy. Surely there is a rule against selling something that is made with human blood…?

Unrelated, Etsy is now featuring another Amy Winehouse treasury on the FP. Just wondering what you guys think about it? I’m a little unsure how to feel about it because on one hand I think it can be looked at as a sincere tribute, on the other hand I feel like Etsy is kind of exploiting this tragedy in the same way these sellers are who suddenly started tagging their items with “Amy Winehouse” just today.

  11. Life During Wartime July 23, 2011 at 4:34 pm #

I think the Amy Winehouse treasuries being pushed to the front page is a cheap and sleazy grasp for clicks, no matter the means.

Etsy admin have a soft spot for female celebs with substance abuse problems. Probably none of you recall the silly vintage promotion Etsy did with a dog called Kate Moss? As if Co-kate had anything to do with fashions of the ‘mad men’ era.

(scrap the above post — wrong link)

To me this seller looks like they digitally alter original photographs of famous peeps. They do NOT look like originals at all. Some, maybe, but most, no way. I wonder what the original photographers of all these peeps would think….

About the bead – she’s over on regretsy and commented that she did it. I think it was supposed to be a bit tongue in cheek.

  14. em July 23, 2011 at 6:36 pm #

It’s my assumption that people who put a dozen cities in their location do so to garner more sales from the ‘shop local’ feature. See how sofisticata uses large cities… it’s obvious. It’s taking advantage of the system, hopefully Etsy will tell her to change it to her true location, but I’m not holding my breath.

If Etsy is willing to promote the death of Ms Winehouse and make a buck off her passing, I wonder if they’re willing to capitalize on the tragedy in Norway? It would bring in publicity and money, after all. . . .

  22. cynicallyopenminded July 24, 2011 at 8:20 am #

Re: the Bead. Tongue in cheek. Fine. That’s someone’s kid. Still poor taste.

Not so questionable “vintage”: I can buy this on QVC in multiple colors.

  23. Pfft July 24, 2011 at 10:20 am #

    Doesn’t deserve a callout, IMHO.

Mass shoe producer in front page treasury:

Here is their company on AliExpress (and, no, their items have not been stolen — this is the same company):
Note that they do contract manufacturing.

Check out the products at the AliExpress link and you will see some of the items available in their Etsy shop, and what the prices are wholesale. Is this a ‘collective’?

  25. Life During Wartime July 24, 2011 at 1:53 pm #

From the same treasury as the manufacturer in my comment above (awaiting moderation):
Isn’t this a ‘weapon’ and so prohibited by the Dos and Don’ts?

  26. Kick The Can July 24, 2011 at 4:04 pm #

The “Amy Winehouse/Overdose” bead is in disgusting taste. No better than anyone trying to make a buck off her death.

  27. MegansBeadedDesigns July 25, 2011 at 6:21 am #

I thought that since Etsy changed how locations are read (you have to select the specific location from the drop down menu on your profile information) this multiple locations, cheating-tactic, doesn’t work? i could be wrong though…

  28. PIF July 25, 2011 at 10:53 am #

Why are some of my comments not moderated and some of them awaiting moderation? Not sure where to ask…

  29. Life During Wartime July 25, 2011 at 11:07 am #

I have a comment from yesterday awaiting moderation, too. I’m sure ECO will moderate them when she gets a chance to look them over.

  30. PIF July 25, 2011 at 11:17 am #

OK, thanks LDW. Is it because the comment contains a link? I’m just trying to work out what is and isn’t moderated.

  31. Life During Wartime July 25, 2011 at 11:41 am #

My comment awaiting moderation has two links to document a reseller, on and off of Etsy. But sometimes my posts need moderation without including any links. Other than having more than one link, dunno what the criteria are for moderation.

  32. etsycallout July 25, 2011 at 2:37 pm #

WordPress has a strict spam-bot which sends many “suspect” comments to moderation. If your comment is not showing up right away we might be using it for it’s own post.

  33. Life During Wartime July 25, 2011 at 3:20 pm #

Thank you, ECO. We weren’t pestering you, just wondering.

  34. PIF July 25, 2011 at 3:34 pm #

No worries ECO, and ditto LDW. Thanks.

ECO I have a couple of pics to compare (re my “awaiting moderation” post) if someone can do one of those fancy lay original image over the seller’s images, but I am locked out of my alter ego email account at the moment and don’t want to use my shop one. 😉 Any way I can post the images for someone to play with them when the moderated post finally appears?
