“Antique reproduction” horsehead door knocker from alibaba http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/310770542/cast_iron_door_knocker.html

And the same item called Handmade by AllCountryPretties http://www.etsy.com/listing/88399236/door-knocker-lucky-horseshoe-and-horse (this is just her current listing, she has sold several already)

Just take a look at her “Cast Iron” shop category, and you’ll see all the same stuff that’s been complained about forever on Etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop/AllCountryPretties?section_id=6515043

This is Etsy coaching at work.

All the reseller items, even the ones with factory multi color paint jobs, included the offer to repaint (PICK YOUR COLOR). If a buyer wants the item as listed, with no paint, I doubt Etsy expects the shop owner to cancel the sale. This is a way of getting reseller goods in by the back door, so to speak, because they fit with the Etsy trends. There are items purchased from a bunch of sources listed on Etsy with an option to repaint or personalize at no extra cost. Such as the Chinese cheap jewelry watch pendants on factory supplied chains where the seller has been coached to offer a different length chain to make the listing qualify for handmade.

This is one of the ugliest sides of handmade on Etsy. A borderline ripoff, IMO.

It’s unbelievable how much of this stuff is on Etsy. And you think they are all about promoting “handmade”. If anyone knows of a handmade site where you can buy quality, truly handmade goods, please let us all know. There’s an opportunity out there. I for one, would promote the heck out of it.

Also, re: tagging. Now that tags are invisible it gives posers that much more leeway. But some are just blatant. Here’s an honest-to-goodness current listing: “Vintage Brass Planters Rustic Wedding Country Rustic Vases Farmhouse French Country Garden Decor For SUcculents Air Plants” http://www.etsy.com/listing/81420459/vintage-brass-planters-rustic-wedding This seller gives Etsy, her teams and vintage sellers all a bad name. (not to mention (Pottery Barn).

EV: massive tag stuffing in this shop! How about a newish bracelet tagged as vintage? http://www.etsy.com/listing/72825384/vintage-jewelry-silver-bracelet-sterling

look at the shipping elsewhere at $45!! and the materials… omg

About the brass items: not rustic, not vases, not farmhouse, not french, not french country. Probably vintage. Unless they are vintage style new decor pieces. Dunno.

The charm bracelet is not 20+ years old. And the shipping? WTF? More like 4-5 dollars.

My fave listing so far from misshettie
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/77543614/vintage-medicine-bottles-collection
Who knew that someone would pay 12 dollars for prescription bottles? I mean, french country rustic vases? Isn’t this kind of key word abuse against the rules on Etsy? Or is it okay als long as the words conform to suggestions from the merchandising team?

Here’s a listing with photos which do not show the actual item being sold:
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/50556070/vintage-chandelier-art-deco-lighting
“NOTE: Chandelier is white not the lavender that shows in the photo” I thought stuff like this was against the rules — you have to show the actual item being sold.

    Seriously altered, no longer vintage:

Waterfall vanity with its veneer painted over:

No longer vintage, seriously altered. OMG, the handles!

  9. Trista January 13, 2012 at 9:20 pm #

LMAO @ the “handles” on that vanity.

Who knew…. all this time I could have been tearing all my old t-shirts into shreds and selling them as handmade drawer handles.

I have seen some of those cast iron reproductions in Tuesday Morning. There’s a sucker born every minute…………..

That dresser is awful. Clues to seller’s cluelessness:

    1) Notice it was painted black in “art decor style” [sic].
    2) Dropping the names Pottern Barn and Anthropogie into the listing.
    3) Covering what may have been an awesome veneer.

I know http://portuguesevintage.etsy.com has been called out before, but the bottle openers from AllCountryPretties led me back to PV.

Couldn’t find a supplier, but here are 3 others from around the ‘net:

Sandra, covering that awesome veneer is considered a “restoration” or a “repair” by Etsy, which is why these items are allowed to be listed as vintage. A certain percentage of sellers on a site as large as Etsy will be clueless, the odds are in favor of it. What I can’t understand is why Etsy hires people equally clueless to handle marketplace integrity.

So if I put a tray on my desk that makes it a baby changing table?

  15. Etsy Vigilante January 14, 2012 at 5:19 pm #

I think you’ve got it, Jobradley! Now just take some photos, list it and wait for your front-page appearance!

Formerly called out reseller Craftasticparties is on the FP:

With a stock photo from the manufacturer. Way to go, Etsy admin.
