Speaking of items from another country…(lame segue, but this is on the front page right now):

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/87866027/free-shipping-pure-collection-v3?ref=fp_treasury_1

    1) The photo making Etsy’s front page shows a whole bunch of stuff. This listing is for a necklace.

    2) The seller is in New York, the item ships from Turkey. (She says she’s in school in NY.)

This may well be handmade by the seller, but the photo and its front page spotlight are extremely annoying. Hence, called out.

The front page treasuries seem to be going through a prop heavy trend. I thought it was against the rules to use a photo for the first pic where it was not clear what was being sold?

Here’s the source of GreenPlanetOrganic’s photo of raw shea butter, listed as handmade:

There may be other issues with this shop. I see they are using their shop name, Green Planet Organics, with a little TM symbol next to it. But that name already belongs to someone else.

    Here they are on Ebay:
    http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=greenplanet-organics&ftab=AllFeedback
    This is a reseller.

Etsy feature fox paws (or faux pas). This item is featured in the staff curated Discover Etsy Home and Garden section, under More Finds:
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/68100463/felt-laying-deer-figure?ref=mh_link&mh_hub=home&mh_eid=849024880&mh_section=featured_listings

Check out the price, the attribute, the category, and the description. Listed as handmade by the seller, but clearly not the case. Time to pack off the Etsy staff for the remedial reading 101 class. How many items actually handmade by the sellers deserve that spot instead? (All of them!)

Holy carp! The shop is a hugely successful reseller of these deer figurines, sold as handmade!
    http://www.etsy.com/shop/popstarscrafts/sold

They are sold by other Etsy shops, too, as supplies.

  9. Mike January 21, 2012 at 7:51 pm #

I see the deer as vintage supply ? Not handmade ?

  10. Life During Wartime January 21, 2012 at 8:59 pm #

How is a figurine a supply? Are Precious Moments figurines allowed as supplies? How about Boyd’s products? Beanie Babies less than 20 years old — supplies? How is a figurine, like the reclining deer (listed as a handmade minature) sold over 200 times (I gave up counting at that point), vintage? All the animal figurines in that shop have been sold again and again and again, dozens or hundreds of times.

  11. chatty January 21, 2012 at 9:26 pm #

He means he sees it listed that way…..she has changed her listings since you called her out. The deer are now listed as a vintage supply.

  12. Life During Wartime January 21, 2012 at 10:05 pm #

Actually, the link to the item that was included in Discover Etsy Home and Garden says (handmade) Dolls and Minatures for the category. I just checked. The seller has gamed the listing form so the attribute shows ‘vintage supply’ for an item listed in a handmade category.. This causes the deer listing to show up in searches for handmade, vintage and supplies — called ‘category bleed’. Nothing has been changed since I called them out.

  13. Mike January 22, 2012 at 7:28 am #

you said it was handmade – so something changed right ? now that it is a vintage supply.

I messaged her about it last night and she tells me that they were bought from a auction of a closed down craft store. She has a limited supply. They are used for floral and wreath making. The paperwork that she got from the auction states that these items were made in the 80’s. hence why she sells them vintage supply. she also went on to tell me how some people use them. she stated that people have used them in terrariums and snow globes and many other crafting things.

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/ArtPrintsoncanvas

    Obvious art reseller.

First caught attention of some forum members when he posted asking if he should buy one of his own items in order to get his first sale:

    http://www.etsy.com/teams/7714/ideas/discuss/9611881/

Several people questioned whether or not the work was his and his replies were, quite frankly, vague and weird.

He started several other threads, including this one, asking what was wrong with his shop:

    http://www.etsy.com/teams/7722/business-topics/discuss/9625568/

Several people TOLD him what was wrong with his shop and the thread was closed for calling out. But almost a week later and after being reported, the shop is still up and running. He has changed his profile stating that he is not reselling and that he and his wife paint the paintings…

but a Google Reverse image search on many of these images tell another story altogether:

    http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/401485/211271112-502420129/Free-shipping-100-handcraftsart-Oil-painting-Madonna-Virgin-Mary-Child-Christ-24×36-inch.html

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/90658115/madonna-and-the-infant-religious

He had up several paintings by Andrew Atroshenko, some Disney images, and several photos pulled off free wallpaper sites, but has pulled them down after people in the forums mentioned them specifically. I have screen captures of the Google Cache page from January 13th showing many of these images in his shop.

He has fooled many people in the forums — fawning over how gorgeous his artwork is and hasn’t sold anything yet…but is amassing new favoriters everyday.

It’s sickening that Etsy will take the time to close down threads in the forums where these resellers call themselves out…but won’t shut down the shops themselves.

  16. Life During Wartime January 22, 2012 at 11:43 am #

Mike, I don’t what you are talking about? Here is a copy and paste from the listing at my link:

    Tags
Dolls and Miniatures (this is a handmade category)
    Animals (handmade subcategory)
Soft Sculpture, deer, female, velvet, felt, fur, brown, laying, woodland creatures, mama, flocked (11 tags)

Here is what you are mistaking for a category:
    About this item
    Vintage Supply
‘About this item’ is called an Attribute. It is not an Etsy category. The deer are being sold as handmade Dolls and Minatures.

  17. DonCholodecki January 22, 2012 at 5:46 pm #

    She is a scam artist.

  18. sickofetsyshit January 22, 2012 at 7:08 pm #

the stuff that “ships from turkey” while the seller herself is in ny – uhhhh… her name, was it supposed to be Angel Dust but she misspelled it? wth is angle dust? but then again, who on earth would name their shop after an illegal drug that makes people violent?

    to seller: stay in school.

  19. sickofetsyshit January 22, 2012 at 7:10 pm #

ooh, i hate having to say this, but

    my mistake!

looks like her “jewelry” really is the ANGLE in her name

    bad me.

  20. .... January 22, 2012 at 11:07 pm #

Loooks like the wording in the soap listing has changed a bit as well

  21. Trista January 23, 2012 at 6:33 am #

I clicked on this shop to report the jewelry they have listed in the housewares category and holy crap, look their “location”! http://www.etsy.com/shop/ARTandpaperByMonica

  22. Mike January 23, 2012 at 8:47 pm #

The 11 tags are what the seller tags it as right ? so where did the other tags come from.
When you are listing an item on etsy it ask questions – who made it ( you, a friend, another company ) , what is it ( a finish product , supply or tool ) and when was it made . for it to be labeled under vintage supply she would have to have put another company , supply / tool , and before 1993. she would not be able to put
Dolls and Miniatures (this is a handmade category)
    Animals (handmade subcategory)
in any fashion. Honestly this looks more like etsys problem. Maybe something from the old system on tagging ? I see you point but at the same time as a seller myself I know how this system works and yes those sub cat’s should not be there but I honestly don’t think it was by the sellers doing ?

    GreenPlanetOrganics is gone.

  24. Life During Wartime January 27, 2012 at 10:38 pm #

Mike, there is no error in Etsy’s listing software that will put an item in a handmade category all by itself. The seller listed the deer in (handmade) dolls and minatures. The attribute shows how the item was listed and how the questions were answered.

Who made it (shop owner said they maide it) THIS IS WHAT ENABLES ACCESS TO HANDMADE CATEGORIES
What is it (shop owner said supply)
When was it made (seller said some time before 1993)
Not Etsy’s error, except for featuring such blatant category mis-use.

  25. Life During Wartime January 27, 2012 at 11:33 pm #

The laying deer figure has been listed in (handmade) Dolls and Minatures from the beginning, before the new listing form:
    http://www.etsy.com/transaction/44582963
It looks like a seller can continue to renew sold forever, and have it still listed as handmade no matter what is answered for the first 3 questions on the form. The seller has not edited the item (question 4) to move it into Vintage or Supplies, instead of Dolls and Minatures. So, Mike is right that there is a loophole in the listing form for renewed sold items, but I am right that the seller has been misusing handmade categories for a year now.
