I almost used an item from Seastyle in a treasury – until I saw this via Alibaba Then I noticed most of the items at Seastyle are not vintage or handmade at all.

The cast iron is typical junk. People do like to toss the word ‘vintage’ around, don’t they? It seems to mean whatever they want it to mean.

I have reported that shop before, obviously did no good

Today on Etsy’s blog post: Daily Candy Crush features multiple handmade (?) and vintage listings from Mclovebuddy – why? Is the Daily Candy Crush curator the owner of Mclovebuddy? If so, that should be mentioned. No name or “ships from” location in this shop.

Todays Etsy Finds email called Bagging RIghts featured MOSTLY mass produced bags from Thialand, Vietnam and Korea. You can tell from the pictures that they aren’t handmade. Anyone else notice that?

I don’t subscribe to Etsy Finds because I do not trust any of the staffers to know what the hell they are doing, period. It took two or three of those emails to piss me off so royally that I had to unsubscribe.

keep in mind that Alibaba is famous for stealing Etsy sellers photos and listing the items for sale…….How would anyone know if those items aren’t handmade? They look it to me.
Just be sure you are absolutely 100% positive before calling out…..just sayin.

I didn’t see a problem with “Bagging rights” either….maybe one of them….but it is ok and Etsy legal to use a premade tote and embelish it or even screen print it.
it’s also ok to use mass produced charms and string them on a chain and call them handmade….ugh…that one bothers me.

  8. itstinks January 26, 2012 at 7:41 pm #

Gina, these bags were not embelished in any way. They were exactly like the bags you would buy at any retail store such as Penneys, Macy’s, Walmart etc.
Here are some of the links to the big ol’ pictures that were featured:

    and on and on….

I usually just glance at these finds and delete because they feature mass produced ALOT but this particular “FIND” just ticked me off.

    off topic but!
ANOTHER seller who was ”banned” and closed back under a NEW name!!

This store was closed by etsy for non-delivery and lack of quality
HERE is the new shop called ‘Crimson Moon Soap’

Here is a glimpse of her old [closed] shop on Tools4Etsy and Google.
    Shop feedback
    Google cache

couple of her full sized listings from her old account/shop-check out the background
Product review showing same bottles.product. Uncanny huh? lol

Scents, bottles descriptions even colors of items match to a Tee.

The wood buoys, mermaid, starfish are all over the internet and have been for years, as well as in numerous catalogs.

Quote from seller: “Amazing Finds from local Florida marine flea market. ”

    Handmade? Vintage? Supply?

Crimson Moon Soup – a douche for after periods?

I don’t think the letters, supposedly made from the wood of old Indonesian ships, are vintage (how they are listed). The listings say the paint on them may vary from the picture…sounds like a new imported decor item made from salvaged wood.

I hope you don’t me posting this here 🙂 I submitted this to the site admin, but I think he/she is so overwhelmed with so many other reports..etc that they didn’t get to it yet, so I will post it here.
HELP me report them please. My one measly report isn’t cutting it!..I guess.

seller [Rue23Paris] who pisses me the EF off!!
She is selling a mix of items, from handmade, to fake vintage.
Here’s a couple of examples. Just visit her shop for 12 pages of WTF!
Oh and she also her website in her listings[ a no no] , telling people to go there to well.
I have this purse! I got it in 2002- I don’t think Kathy V has even been around long enough to actually have anything vintage yet.
Here is a mink brooch, posed with Chanel wrapping/gift box. But Chanel has never has a mink brooch, ever.

Leopard bag marked “Angel” not Vintage

NON Vintage “chunky chain” posed with more Chanel packaging.

A LJO Collection [snorts] Military bag

    Beaded rope chain

What the hell is a ‘Rustic Farmhouse Doggy? I don’t see ANYTHING Rustic about that shitty made tag so she must mean the dog was raised in a farmhouse?

non handmade / vintage military hat

    a NEW Liz Claiborne purse

    Anyhow…that is it LOL

seems as long as its handmade style, or vintage style, or retro looking and fits into etsy asthetic they get to stay???

itstinks – regarding the bags from stylebari…. I purchased one of her bags and as a professional seamstress I can tell you it was 100% handmade. Just because Alibaba and ebay steal photographs to resell or replicate, or just because YOU don’t thinks something is not handmade does not make it so.

  17. Life During Wartime January 31, 2012 at 1:09 pm #

Based on comments from Etsy admins in the forums, some of them think that anything made with or from a vintage item is itself vintage.

The illogic works something like this:

If I go to an unfinished furnishing store and buy a small piece and paint or finish or embellish it myself, then I can list it as handmade. I do not have to make the chair or occasional table or frame myself; embellishing or altering (painting or finishing) makes the item handmade.

If I pick up a vintage small piece at a thrift or on the curb side, and refinish it or paint it or embellish it, it is still vintage! Because I didn’t make the chair or occasional table or the frame myself.

Vintage is always vintage, but altered new items are handmade.

Etsy hires The Stupids. They do not know their asses from first base or shit from shinola,

Hah! The first item listed in the shop today is a beach style table top that looks remarkably like the furniture being sold by ecologica malibu!!
When you select the table top there are even photos of the Indonesian workers.

    Item description in shop:

“It’s a unique rectangular table top made from old Indonesian ships (as shown on the
picture attached), so it has a history, like scratches, several different paint layers,
    and nautical charm.

We cleaned it up and restored, refreshed with some paint.
    It’s an eco-friendly table top, as it’s been re-purposed.”
