“Antique reproduction” horsehead door knocker from alibaba http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/310770542/cast_iron_door_knocker.html

And the same item called Handmade by AllCountryPretties http://www.etsy.com/listing/88399236/door-knocker-lucky-horseshoe-and-horse (this is just her current listing, she has sold several already)

Just take a look at her “Cast Iron” shop category, and you’ll see all the same stuff that’s been complained about forever on Etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop/AllCountryPretties?section_id=6515043

I think this is allowed as handmade on Etsy because every listing includes a finish customized to order. The seller does not claim to make the cast iron, and according to Etsy rules about what is handmade, they don’t have to make the item — just embellish it with paint or whatever.

Nothing new here…or should I say nothing old…

  3. It Ain't Recycled If You Bought It New March 19, 2012 at 5:42 am #

Yeah, she’s Etsy-legal. But a good callout for the headdesk factor.

Alibaba calls the color “rusty.” So she takes a new product that’s been painted to look old, and paints it again to look old?

And by calling your shop “recycled and upcycled” with the word “vintage” in the shop announcement, a shopper will think the cast iron stuff is vintage, too. That’s just sneaky.

No one who knows anything about vintage or shops for country decor will mistake these items for old things.

Paint anything and it is considered handmade. I’d have a hard time calling myself an artist if all I did was spray paint crap.

Actually, on Etsy often what is bought knew is considered recycled. People who know nothing about how science works don’t understand that importing new items from China and applying chemicals to them as a craft project is not what re- or up- cycling means. For them, it’s only feelings that count. They love little animals and children, and they love handmade, so what they buy (which they mostly don’t need) is good for the planet.

Sheesh, NEW not knew. I am drinking more coffee now.

AllCountryPretties is Etsy legal I guess.

    On another note…

TribalStyle has sold approx 500 items in 2 weeks. Is that possible for a small shop to do so without help? Don’t they need to disclose everyone that works there.

SpiffingJewelry is another one that bugs me, I know, I’m a jealous hating loser, right? Don’t they need to disclose their helpers? They sold over 450 items in 2 weeks. This shop admits in their announcement to selling jewelry inspired by Star Wars, Harry Potter, Firefly, Game of Thrones, True Blood, Disney and so much more.

AllCountry offers a choice of paint or the original finish. So if you choose the original finish, it is unaltered and a violation of the TOU.

So technically, I could offer anything for sale and offer to alter it in some way or you can choose to buy it unaltered?

Don, yes, that’s the scam. It’s just about finding the “handmade” loophole to be able to sell a new product as “altered”. For a great example of how this can go so wrong, LandsEnd offers monogramming on almost anything. What’s to stop them from setting up an Etsy store selling monogrammed polo shirts. They have “helpers” in a “collective”. Not that Etsy cares what I think, but bad planning in scaling their business model got them here.

Another cheap mass-produced item that has been painted white — it was cream-colored before. Now that’s an upcycle! It is now a “Handmade Metal Crown Votive Candle Holder French Country White Metal Crown Shabby Chic” http://www.etsy.com/listing/95122648/metal-crown-votive-candle-holder-french?ref=tre-2504762307-2
Here it is at Sears http://www.sears.com/king-imports-crown-candle-holder-metal/p-02409196000P
    And Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003GISBYU/ref=asc_df_B003GISBYU1931773?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=nextagus0068126-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B003GISBYU
    (candle not included – $45)

It is Etsy-legal as handmade, though. As long as the painted item isn’t vintage, painting it makes it handmade. If it’s vintage, painting doesn’t do anything. It’s still vintage. A perfect example of Etsy logic!
