GlamorousBijoux

This seller was on the front page. I have my doubts as to some of it. The headband that was on the front bag was called vintage. I don’t think its even handmade. Thoughts?

I swear, this seller looks like a heavily coached new store by Portobello. Notice how there is absolutely no personal information about the seller. I immediately recognize a few pieces which I’ve reported Portobello for from Wedding Factory Direct and the rhinestone jewelery website:

The ONLY difference is that the ribbon is cut in the middle. Seriously? This is handmade? I think not.

All the wedding category stuff is suspect to me. The wedding tagged things are so “get the wmen while she is bride-crazy” that it invites scammers. I don’t know anything about jewelry, though, because I don’t wear it. But as soon as I see “wedding”, i am gone.

And $92 for that?!? I call BS!

This isn’t Portobello (who now goes by “Ornent” on etsy, btw) but it’s the same idea—buy mass produced jewelry from WeddingFactoryDirect or OrientalTreasuresTrading and do a couple of minor changes (like remove a crystal or two or add a pearl) and voila–etsy legal! Another very similar seller is TheRedMagnolia on etsy. And I’m sure there are many, many more just like these on etsy who really don’t hand-make anything, and barely hand-alter everything.

I just looked on CraftCult for the item which was on the FP, and it just has ‘vintage’ in title. It’s listed as a handmade item. Anything on Etsy can have the word ‘vintage’ in the title. There is no rule about how and when the word can be used. The rules only say you cannot list items newer than 20 years old in the Vintage category.

If I buy something titled “Vintage Hair Accessory”, I except to get a vintage hair accessory. Silly me.

Buy $39.00 hair accessory, cut ribbon in half and glue back together, charge $92 dollars. I am not *ahem* crafting *cough, choke* the right stuff.

Etsy should be paying people like yourself to find these things. It would be a full time job for someone, or maybe even more than one person.
If they didn’t want to pay someone to do it for a job, then there should be a finders fee for finding and reporting these shops.
Ahem…why does it seem like that will never happen?!
I think Etsy would be just as big and profitable with the fake handmade weeded out. For one thing, you would be able to find something a lot faster without having to sort through this kind of thing.

Mari…supposedly they do have a staff that’s supposed to be doing that. They mentioned that in the midst of the boat lady debacle that even made the news. They also have links on site for other sellers to report shops and items that violate TOU. They seem to disregard many of these reports.

The fiasco that is the wedding catagory on Etsy makes me glad I’m already married.

EO people are pretty freaky and I can’t imagine their blog is going to be good for their business.

wow whatever. I don’t know the deal with the 2 soap shops. Nor do I care. But the commenter, Heidi, over there sounds very bitter to ECO and a bit like a “loose” goose. Er I mean cannon.

  12. TheBargainBabe June 22, 2012 at 7:26 pm #

omgosh I am going back and reading the eco post about elysian organics. (I noted that their etsy shop is now gone).
Elysian posted on that thread…they are so rude. One post I just read from them said, “I have to put my children in bed and go make more soap. Have a nice life, LOSERS.”

Now where have we heard THAT before??? Am I the only one now thinking Loosey was a bitter Elysian?

wow. is it possible that this is the same person so fixated a few weeks ago on us fat husbandless losers?? Or..*shudder*…is there more than just one person out there that would use such stupid insults?

While I generally try to not get my hopes up at wild theories – BargainBabe, I love this theory! She/he/it truly could be a scorned shop owner who has been trying to discredit this blog ever since. Nice detective skills, fatty.

This is not handmade. It is sandcast, very cheap, with cut glass, not even crystals. Complete junk, probably from China.

    totally china. cheap crap. totally.
